Bodies of Suspected Chinese Nationals Found Floating in Moei River
Two decomposed bodies believed to be of Chinese nationals were found floating in Thailand's Moei River on 6 October 2026. Villagers, noting the advanced state of decay, pushed the bodies back into the water instead of retrieving them. The discovery follows heightened border patrols aimed at curbing Chinese grey groups and online scam operations, and investigators have yet to determine whether the deaths are linked to human‑trafficking or other violence.
On 6 October 2026, Thai villagers reported finding two bodies resembling Chinese nationals, aged approximately 30‑35, floating in the Moei River opposite Ban Munruachai in Phop Phra Subdistrict, Phop Phra District, Tak Province. The remains were already badly decomposed, so locals chose to push them back into the river rather than retrieve them, noting that such discoveries are not uncommon along the river. While authorities have not yet determined whether the victims were killed by human‑trafficking gangs or in some other conflict, the area opposite Ban Munruachai, Ban Wa Leu and Ban Mokuer in Wa Leu Subdistrict is known for frequent movements of Chinese nationals and suspected victims being sent across into Myanmar.
