Severe Flooding Alert Issued for Bangkok and Central Thailand
Thailand's Meteorological Department issued a severe weather warning for Bangkok and central regions as heavy rainfall causes flash flooding risks and riverbank overflow across multiple provinces through September 27.
The Thai Meteorological Department issued its 14th severe weather warning (230/2024) on September 27, 2024, at 05:00 a.m., with effects through September 27. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is affecting the western central region, while Bangkok, its metropolitan area, and the eastern region are experiencing decreasing but still continuous rain with heavy downpours in some areas. A low-pressure system covers the western central region, combined with a moderately strong southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, the south, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Authorities warn residents of dangers from heavy to very heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation that may cause flash floods, waterlogging, riverbank overflow, and landslides, particularly in foothill and low-lying areas. People should avoid traveling through areas prone to repeated flooding, especially low-lying zones at risk of sudden inundation. Waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are moderately strong, with upper sections reaching 2–3 meters and exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf should remain ashore until September 28, 2024.
Residents are urged to plan activities and travel carefully during this period and monitor updates from the Thai Meteorological Department via http://www.tmd.go.th, by phone at 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, or through 24-hour hotlines. The western central region will continue experiencing heavy rainfall with very heavy downpours in some areas, while Bangkok, its suburbs, and the east will see decreasing but ongoing rain with occasional heavy showers. Landslides are also possible in steep, water-crossed areas and hillside zones. The upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand have moderately strong winds with waves of 2–3 meters, exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms. Fishermen are advised to navigate cautiously and avoid thunderstorm areas, with small boats remaining ashore through September 28. In the northern region, thunderstorms affect 60 percent of the area with heavy rain in Sukhothai, Phisanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun provinces, and very heavy rain in parts of Tak and Kamphaeng Phet provinces.
