Son-in-law Kills Parents-in-Law Over Secret Paddy Sale
A 55‑year‑old son‑in‑law fatally slashed his 76‑year‑old father‑in‑law and 77‑year‑old mother‑in‑law with a hook‑bladed knife after discovering they had secretly sold a paddy field he had been cultivating to build a house for his daughter. He hid inside the house before surrendering to police, who recovered the weapon hidden under a rice granary. The victims’ daughter said the couple had long clashed with her husband over his domineering behaviour, while neighbours described him as a hard‑working former village assistant.
The 55‑year‑old son‑in‑law, Mr. Prasith, said he had long been angry with his parents‑in‑law over their handling of the paddy field he had worked on to save for his daughter’s future home. He claimed the field was sold without his consent, despite his objections, and that he had been shouldering all household expenses without recognition. On the morning of the incident, after learning of the sale, he confronted the couple, who followed him in a car and renewed the argument. His father‑in‑law struck him on the head with a piece of wood, causing him to lose control. He grabbed a nearby hook‑bladed knife and attacked both victims, inflicting fatal wounds to their necks and heads. He then hid the knife beneath a rice granary at the side of the house and waited to surrender. Police persuaded him to come out, and he confessed, handing over the weapon. The victims’ daughter, Ms. Ratree, 54, said her husband had always been domineering and that the couple never got along, though he had never previously harmed her parents. A neighbour, Ms. Sangwar, 63, described him as a diligent former village assistant who was active in community work, expressing shock at the violent act. Authorities have taken Mr. Prasith into custody with the knife as evidence and will proceed with legal action at Dechathon Police Station.
