Taiwan Office Vows to Deepen Cultural Ties With Thailand

Taiwan's representative in Thailand vowed to deepen cultural ties through film despite alleged Chinese interference, saying the 8th Taiwan Documentary and Film Festival will showcase 17 films across three Thai cities through July 26.

Taiwan Office Vows to Deepen Cultural Ties With Thailand

BANGKOK — 22 July 2026, The Taiwanese government representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Thailand said that he had received no calls from Thai government officials over an alleged attempt by the Chinese Embassy to intervene in the 8th Taiwan Documentary and Film Festival in Thailand.

Peter Lan made the remarks after the festival's opening ceremony at House Samyan, where he was asked about the alleged intervention and whether he had been contacted by Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"I think I'm here tonight to make sure that we have this wonderful cultural event going on," He said. "I encourage everyone to focus on the wonderful and iconic movies."

"I have already said my personal view on the interpretation of those movies, so I will not go further," he added.

Lan said the festival had received support from various partners and that, so far, there had been no contact from Thai government officials regarding the matter.

Asked how Taiwan plans to promote cultural ties with Thailand through film amid the current circumstances, Lan said cultural exchange remained an important part of the relationship between the two sides.

"As you can tell from the name, it is the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. So, of course, this will be very important when it comes to exchange and understanding between Thailand and Taiwan," he said.

Lan pointed to progress in trade, investment and business opportunities between Taiwan and Thailand, saying cultural exchange represented another important pillar of bilateral relations.

"Tonight, when we are showing our iconic movies, all 17 of them, we are focusing on another pillar of these relations. And this will continue, and we will strive to do so," he said.

The Taiwanese films and documentaries will be shown from 22 to 26 July, at House Samyan, Century Sukhumvit in Bangkok, and Pratudang Space in Khon Kaen.

Asked why the alleged interference had occurred for the first time in the festival's eight-year history, Lan expressed confidence in Thailand's commitment to cultural exchange.

"The host country is Thailand, and Thai people are peace-loving, democratic, supporting freedom of speech and freedom of expression," he said. "So we have every confidence that we can continue this kind of exchange between Taiwan and Thailand."

Earlier during the event, Lan also spoke about the family-focused themes portrayed in the films being screened at the festival.

Referencing a Thai saying that "those who have no music in their heart are truly strange and peculiar," he said viewers might reach a similar conclusion after watching the films, that families without empathy, compassion, respect and love are "truly strange and peculiar."

"If you watch those movies, you understand that if somebody claims to be your family member but knows only pressure, coercion and threats as a means to communicate with you, that's not family," he said.

"Family members need to know empathy, compassion, respect and love."

Hudson Confident Thailand Can Compete for 2026 AFF Championship

Thailand coach Anthony Hudson expressed confidence his squad can compete in the 2026 AFF Championship qualifying despite lower fitness levels than some rivals, as the team prepared for their opening match against Laos on July 25.

Hudson Confident Thailand Can Compete for 2026 AFF Championship
23 Jul Khaosod

Thailand national football team head coach Anthony Hudson acknowledged that his squad will enter the 2026 AFF Championship with lower fitness levels than some other nations, but expressed confidence they can still perform well. The team departed for Laos on July 23 to begin Group B qualifying matches, with their first game against Laos scheduled for July 25, led by Anthony Hudson with a 24-player squad that had been training together since July 14.

Hudson stated that the camp featured many new players, with the primary goal of ensuring all athletes understood the team's playing philosophy. He noted that players arrived with different fitness levels from their clubs' varying preseason schedules, and the coaching staff worked to maximize their conditioning. "Before we faced Laos, there were no problems, and we considered ourselves well-prepared," he said.

During the tournament, Hudson emphasized the focus would be on match fitness development in each game. He expressed strong confidence in all his players, including younger players and newcomers who performed well during training. "Our immediate goal is to secure victory over Laos in the first match and continue developing in each subsequent game," he said.

Hudson acknowledged that Thailand's physical conditioning was less intense than some other nations that had prepared earlier, with some countries having longer team preparation periods and warm-up matches. However, he stressed that throughout the camp, every player had worked to push themselves and build their fitness to the expected level. "This is the preseason phase, so fitness development is naturally part of the process," he explained.

Midfielder Saraç Uygun said the key factor was physical condition, noting that while Thailand started training later than others, the coaching staff had invested heavily in building their strength throughout the camp. He acknowledged that the AFF Championship is not an easy tournament, as every team has quality and various factors affect the competition, including travel and fan influence. "When the tournament arrives, there are no excuses—we must give our best performance," he said.

Defender Manuel Tom Bier commented that he observed strong team unity in camp, with young star players joking around with him in a fun atmosphere. He noted they had two more training sessions before the first match and expressed optimism about starting the tournament well.

Road Transport Costs Spike 11% in Q2, Agricultural Goods Hit Hardest

Road transport costs jumped 11% in the second quarter, with agricultural goods seeing the steepest increases at 15.5% as operators face higher fuel, maintenance, and labor expenses across Thailand.

Road Transport Costs Spike 11% in Q2, Agricultural Goods Hit Hardest
23 Jul Khaosod

Road transport service costs surged 11.1% in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with increases across all product categories, according to Nanthapon Jiralertphong, director of the Office of Trade and Strategic Policy at Thailand's Ministry of Commerce. Agricultural and fishery products recorded the sharpest gains, jumping 15.5%, while mining products rose 4.3% and industrial products climbed 10.7% due to higher transport fees for food products, machinery, refined petroleum products, vehicles, and components.

All vehicle types saw rate increases, ranging from 4.8% for heavy-haul trailers to 13.2% for hazardous material trucks. Beyond diesel fuel costs—the primary expense for transport operators—logistics companies face rising maintenance, parts, administrative costs, and acute shortages of skilled truck drivers that are pushing labor costs higher. These combined pressures have forced operators to raise service prices to reflect actual operating expenses.

Jiralertphong forecasted that transport costs will likely remain elevated in the third quarter due to expected higher fuel prices and seasonal agricultural demand, though rainy season conditions may create logistical delays. However, competitive pricing pressures may cause some operators to absorb increased costs to retain customers, while global energy volatility could cause actual rates to diverge from current forecasts.

23 Jul Khaosod

Police received a report at 5:15 a.m. on July 23, 2025, of a foreign tourist drowning in a private villa swimming pool in Kathu District, Phuket. Officers rushed to the scene and found the body of Ms. Claire, a 22-year-old from Uganda, face-down at the bottom of the approximately 2-meter-deep pool.

According to initial investigation, an Indian national named Chakeeb, who reported the incident, stated he had arrived in Thailand the previous day and met the victim at an entertainment venue on Bangla Road. After drinking alcohol together, they traveled to the villa. Around 4:00 a.m., both entered the pool. The victim, a weak swimmer, encountered difficulty in the pool with its steep-sloped floor. When she began to drown, Chakeeb attempted to help but was unable to rescue her. He exited the pool and sought assistance, attempting to call emergency services, eventually reaching rescuers around 4:30 a.m.

Initial investigation found no signs of struggle or disturbance in the villa room. The pool lacked nearby life-saving equipment. Police have summoned Chakeeb for further questioning and drug testing procedures. The body has been sent to Vachira Hospital Phuket for autopsy, and authorities are coordinating with the Ugandan embassy to contact the victim's family.

Anti-Corruption Panel Backs PM Anutin in Local Exam Scandal

An anti-corruption committee chair expressed confidence in PM Anutin's innocence after complaints linked him to a civil service exam fraud scandal, while investigators continue probing officials' involvement in the recruitment scheme.

Anti-Corruption Panel Backs PM Anutin in Local Exam Scandal
23 Jul Khaosod

At 10:15 a.m. on July 23, 2569, Asapol Sannitriphop, a Phumi Thai Party MP from Sisaket and chair of the House committee on anti-corruption and misconduct prevention, spoke to reporters before the committee meeting to examine allegations of state officials' involvement in fraud during recruitment exams for civil servants and local government employees.

Asapol revealed that the committee had invited relevant agencies including the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the Financial Intelligence Unit, the State Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), the Royal Thai Police's suppression division, the Department of Special Investigation, and the Thai Anti-Corruption Organization. These bodies are tasked with investigating and prosecuting disciplinary and criminal cases related to the scandal. The meeting was called to monitor progress—specifically, how far various units have advanced. The NACC, for example, released 50 names of implicated officials but notably omitted the Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry and the Director-General of the Department of Local Administration, raising public questions about their absence from the investigation scope.

On the question of complaints filed with the House legal affairs committee that implicated Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in the fraud, alleging proceeds would fund past elections, Asapol expressed full confidence in the premier's innocence, noting that he himself was the first to raise the exam fraud issue with Anutin in 2566, leading to a joint resolution by five agencies. "I can confirm that the Prime Minister wants wrongdoers held accountable under the law, and as chair of the anti-corruption committee, I am committed to collaboration—whether with opposition or government committees and anti-corruption bodies—because we want all involved in misconduct, regardless of rank, to face legal punishment," Asapol stated.
