Teenagers in Nakhon Ratchasima are wearing traditional Thai flower garlands as hair accessories for landmark photos, boosting flower vendor sales by 30% and sparking a cultural fashion movement among young people.
The 'Malai Rad Glao' fashion trend is gaining traction among teenagers and students after people began adapting traditional Thai flower garlands as hair accessories to wear while photographing iconic locations, sparking an online movement with many influencers creating content around the trend. At Mae Gim Heng Market in Nakhon Ratchasima city, groups of teenagers and students have been purchasing flowers and garlands from shops, adorning their hair with them before heading to photograph landmarks around the city, resulting in a noticeable 30% increase in sales for flower vendors and garland merchants. Two third-year education students from Wongchavalitkul University, Siamol Yaengjai and Thanaporn Chomphutsadh, revealed that while the trend is popular in Bangkok, they wanted Nakhon Ratchasima to be part of it. They chose to photograph at provincial landmarks as keepsakes while also contributing to the preservation of Thai culture by adapting traditional wisdom to modern times. They are inviting young people and the public to experiment with Thai garlands in various ways and create a fashion movement that maintains Thai identity, ensuring Thai wisdom and culture endure.
