Thailand and China Launch Early Warning System for Cheap Imports

Thailand and China have established a joint monitoring mechanism to track cheap online goods flooding into Thailand. Chaninthorn Harimjiranya, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, revealed that on September 22, 2025, Thailand's delegation attended the eighth China-Thailand Trade Remedy Cooperation Meeting with China's Trade Remedy and Investigation Bureau. Thailand proposed creating an Early Warning mechanism between the two countries to monitor rapidly increasing imports and signals of market dumping, establishing channels for agencies to exchange information and resolve issues early before they impact businesses or escalate into trade disputes.

The proposal follows Thailand's imports from China in the first two quarters of 2025, valued at approximately 2.21 trillion baht, up 31.55 percent year-on-year, amid Thai business concerns over rising imports through both conventional trade and e-commerce channels. An advance monitoring and alert system would help both sides track trade trends and address emerging problems promptly.

Both parties also discussed technical and legal matters related to trade remedy investigation processes, the application of artificial intelligence in investigations, and experience-sharing on assisting Thai and Chinese exporters facing retaliatory trade measures. The Early Warning mechanism is not intended to increase trade retaliation between Thailand and China but to ensure appropriate, fair, and necessary use of trade remedies, reduce trade dispute risks, and maintain smooth and sustainable long-term trade relations. Thailand confirmed readiness to continue close cooperation with the Chinese bureau and invited China to attend the ninth Thailand-China Trade Remedy Cooperation Meeting, which Thailand will host next year.
