Narathiwat's Beloved Crispy Rice Snack Kua Po
Narathiwat's Kanah-Bangron shop serves traditional crispy rice snack Kua Po made with fresh mackerel and no preservatives, offering multiple forms from dry sheets to ready-fried portions at affordable prices.
Kua Po Fried, or traditional homemade crispy rice, is made using an unchanged original recipe with the aroma of fresh fish and a light, crispy texture. Saoraiya Sareap, a reporter for Sawad News in Narathiwat Province, visited the Kanah-Bangron shop run by Amrundhorn Naekrama, known as Bangron, a 32-year-old second-generation owner. He explained that the secret behind the delicious Kua Po Fried is fresh mackerel that is never frozen.
"We don't use preservatives; our ingredients are always fresh. Fried Kua Po keeps for one week and crispy rice heads for three days to ensure customers get the best taste," Bangron said.
The shop offers multiple options. Sheet-form Kua Po in its original dry recipe costs 85 baht per kilogram and can be fried at home in large quantities. Ready-fried portions come in 500-gram sizes for 60 baht, crispy and ready to eat. Chicken-foot-style Kua Po in dry form is 90 baht per kilogram, with ready-fried 500-gram portions at 60 baht. Seasoned portions are available in 200-gram packages for 25 baht with a rich, balanced flavor. Raw crispy rice heads cost 25 baht per kilogram as a budget-friendly quality ingredient.
Out-of-province customers can order through train or minibus delivery only, to prevent impact damage to the delicate sheet-form Kua Po. The shop is located at Kanah-Bangron, Village 5, Baan Mai, on the Narathiwat-Tak Bai Road, with a branch in Sukhirin as well. Open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Orders and inquiries: 098-349-2037 or 062-434-6420.
