Thailand Readies Solar Panel Standards Before September Enforcement

Thailand's Industrial Products Standards Office is fast-tracking compliance licenses for solar panel manufacturers and related equipment ahead of mandatory standards taking effect in September 2026. The government is promoting solar energy adoption across residential and commercial sectors to reduce fossil fuel dependency and lower electricity costs. Over 2,000 businesses are being prepared to meet new standards, with 260 already having applied for licenses and the office streamlining the licensing process to operate 24/7 electronically.

Thailand Readies Solar Panel Standards Before September Enforcement

Industry Minister Weerawuth Silparch has directed the Industrial Products Standards Office to fast-track the enforcement of solar panel standards and related equipment ahead of their mandatory implementation this September. The government is backing the push to promote solar energy use among households and businesses to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower electricity bills, mitigate climate change impacts, and boost energy security as solar installations surge rapidly.

"I have instructed the standards office to accelerate enforcement of solar panel and related equipment standards with a focus on operational safety, while preparing businesses to apply for compliance licenses before the September 2026 deadline," Weerawuth said.

Standards Office Secretary General Ekniti Romyanon confirmed the office is readying over 2,000 solar equipment manufacturers, importers, and retailers across five product categories—circuit breakers, fuses, electrical wiring, batteries, and inverters—on standard requirements and inspection procedures. The licensing process has been streamlined to be fast, accurate, and non-disruptive to operations.

Facilitating measures include allowing use of factory assessments already registered with the standards office and accepting results from international (IEC) testing standards without retesting solar panels. So far, 260 businesses have applied for licenses, with the office completing factory assessments for over 170 manufacturers and registering about 30 additional facilities.

The standards office now accepts applications through its electronic licensing system around the clock, from document submission through fee payment, testing, and certificate issuance. It will prioritize issuing licenses to businesses with complete documents immediately after standards enforcement begins.

Flooding in Pua district, Nan province, has affected seven subdistricts, 60 villages, and 8,000 households, with over 16,000 people facing hardship. Two deaths have been reported: the first victim was a bedridden patient living with his mother in Moo 8, Sila Phet subdistrict, Pua district, who was swept away by floodwaters; the second was a male aged 45–50 found by the Petchkasem Foundation near Baan Fai Mool in Paa Kha subdistrict, Tha Wang Pha district.

Flooding has also been reported in Santhisuk and Mae Chrim districts. While water levels in Pua district have begun to recede, the floodwaters are moving toward Tha Wang Pha district, with communities along the Nan River and tributary streams at risk of sudden inundation. A red alert has been issued for Chiang Yuen and Nao Tao villages in Tha Wang Pha district, where water levels continue to rise. The lower Worakon Road near Tha Wang Pha market is now impassable, and four vulnerable patients have been evacuated from Baan Fai Mool.

Nan Municipality is using sandbags and big bags to seal gaps behind the Namloam community to prevent floodwaters from inundating Nan Hospital. Surappol Thiersutr, mayor of Nan Municipality, warned that the monsoon system is expected to bring continued heavy rainfall through August 21, with some areas receiving over 200 millimeters and Pua district over 300 millimeters. Water levels could potentially reach those seen in 2006. The municipality is running pumps at full capacity, sealing weak points, and has opened temporary shelters. The Nakhon Nan Development Bridge is set to close at 4:00 p.m. due to rising water levels. Additionally, Highway 1256 between Pua and Doi Phu Ka National Park has been closed following reports of multiple high-voltage power poles downed and tilted—15 poles have fallen and approximately 23 are leaning.

On August 19, Public Health Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Somruk Chungsaman reported widespread flash flooding and riverbank overflow across Nan province. In Pua district, floodwaters have blocked the main Pua-Chiang Klang road, disrupting northern transport routes and affecting many staff at Somdej Phra Yuphrachahospital. The hospital has opened Building 114 to accommodate discharged patients unable to return home, and staff members are also among the affected. In Sansai district, riverbank overflow has forced residents to evacuate, with some still trapped at Ban Sribun Ruean in Phon subdistrict; rescue operations are ongoing. In Tha Wang Pha district, rapid flash floods have impacted Yom and Chom Phon subdistricts, and residents in vulnerable areas have been evacuated, though local health facilities remain operational.

Floodwaters from upstream areas are expected to continue flowing toward Muang Nan and Wieng Sa districts, with ongoing heavy rainfall forecast through August 21. A mass of water is predicted to enter Nan municipality around 10 p.m. tonight. Nan Hospital has already deployed sandbags along vulnerable areas and prepared water-pumping equipment in case water overflows or enters the facility. Health authorities have been ordered to monitor water levels and emergency transport routes in real time, prepare evacuation plans for patients and vulnerable groups, and confirm backup power, water, oxygen, medicine, and medical supply systems. The Regional Health Office 1 has appointed Deputy Provincial Public Health Officer Aphichit Sathaworwiwat as incident commander for the northern zone covering Pua, Chiang Klang, Tha Wang Pha, Thung Chiang, Bo Kluea, and Phra Kiao districts, with emergency transport from the north to use high-clearance military vehicles via the Bo Kluea-Pua alternate route. Shelter centers have been opened in Pua town hall auditorium, Silapat Community School auditorium, Pua subdistrict municipality auditorium, Wat Pa Muead, the entrance to Ban Don Chai, Wornnakorn subdistrict administration office, and Chom Chang and Ban Siao schools. Muang Nan, Phrae, and Wieng Sa areas are to prepare fully, while other areas must have MERT, mini-MERT, JIT, SEhRT, and MCATT teams ready and reserve emergency funds on hand, prioritizing staff safety.

Thai Military Bank Launches Service for Mid-Level Wealth Clients

Thai Military Bank has launched "ttb superior," a new wealth management service targeting middle-income professionals aged 30 and above who are beginning to build wealth. The service aims to help 160,000 to 180,000 customers grow their assets from one million baht to five million baht and push the group's total assets under management to 360–370 billion baht by 2028. The initiative addresses gaps in investment knowledge and asset allocation, offering tailored savings, investment, and financial planning solutions for the mass affluent market.

Thai Military Bank is expanding into the mass affluent market with the launch of "ttb superior," targeting customers aged 30 and above with monthly incomes of 75,000 baht or more. The service aims to help clients progress from their first million baht toward larger financial goals and eventual entry into the premium wealth bracket. Bank chief executive Thakorn Piayaphan said the bank has long developed wealth management for high-end clients but is now extending services to the mass affluent segment, which has significant growth potential.

According to market research, Thailand has nearly 1.5 million deposit accounts ranging from one to five million baht, valued at approximately three trillion baht, reflecting the substantial size of this market. Thai Military Bank currently has about 10 million deposit customers, of which roughly 600,000 fit the mass affluent profile: aged 30 or older, earning at least 75,000 baht monthly, and actively using digital services. However, only about 100,000 have crossed the one-million-baht asset threshold, leaving over 400,000 with untapped wealth-building potential.

Thakorn identified three key gaps in wealth management for this segment: over 75% hold assets primarily as deposits, about 60% keep funds in low-yield assets reflecting an "underinvestment" problem, many lack investment knowledge and information ("underinformed"), and the large customer base makes individualized relationship manager service difficult ("underserved"). The "ttb superior" service addresses these gaps through three pillars: Superior Solutions (savings and investment products including "ttb ME save" offering 1.30% annual interest with potential bonuses up to 1.50%), Superior Digital Wealth Advisory, and Superior Privilege, covering savings, investment, protection planning, and lifestyle benefits.

Thailand Targets 12 Trillion Baht Exports to Boost Weak GDP Growth

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister pledged to drive export value to 12 trillion baht this year to boost weak second-quarter GDP growth of 1.9 percent. The government is preparing tariff negotiations with the United States in late August, targeting broader exemptions for Thai goods currently at 72 percent coverage. Thailand is also coordinating flood relief efforts in northern provinces.

Thailand Targets 12 Trillion Baht Exports to Boost Weak GDP Growth
44 min ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachai Panitchpakdi expressed dissatisfaction with Thailand's second-quarter GDP growth rate of 1.9 percent, down from 2.8 percent in the first quarter. The slowdown has been attributed to impacts from the Middle East conflict, which has raised energy prices and living costs for the public.

Exports remain a critical engine for GDP growth. The government projects two-digit growth in export value for the full year, with first-half exports (January-June) totaling approximately 6.6 trillion baht. If conditions remain stable, full-year exports are expected to reach 12 trillion baht. A technical team is scheduled to negotiate the U.S. Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) on August 27-29, with Panitchpakdi following on August 30-September 1.

The government is currently resolving two Section 301 investigation issues: forced labor, which has been concluded, and surplus production, where the U.S. alleges Thai goods are transshipped. Panitchpakdi expressed confidence that Thailand can clarify its position, noting that domestic production accounts for 75-90 percent in three key sectors—rubber, machinery, and automobiles—exceeding the U.S. 60-percent threshold. Currently, 72 percent of Thai goods enjoy U.S. tariff exemptions, and negotiations are underway to secure relief for the remaining 28 percent, particularly agricultural products. Final discussions are scheduled for late August through early September.

Parallel to trade matters, Panitchpakdi instructed preparations to address flooding in Nan Province and neighboring areas, directing the Department of Internal Trade to coordinate with the private sector to ensure adequate supplies of essential consumer goods.

Thailand Pushes Rice Exports to Philippines, Targets 600,000 Tonnes

Thailand Pushes Rice Exports to Philippines, Targets 600,000 Tonnes

The Department of Foreign Trade and the Thai Rice Exporters Association are aggressively pursuing the Philippine market to remove trade obstacles and promote quality rice. Export volumes for the first six months of 2025 jumped 110 percent, and the department is confident that full-year exports will exceed 600,000 tonnes.

Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, announced that Deputy Director-General Chanintra Rimcherng led a government and private-sector delegation to Manila on August 3, 2025, to strengthen rice trade cooperation between Thailand and the Philippines. The team held discussions with Food Terminal Incorporated, the Philippine Rice Importers Association, and the Philippine Rice Industry Stakeholders Movement to exchange market data, food security policies, import trends, and explore ways to improve logistics systems and reduce trade barriers.

The delegation also met with the Bureau of Plant Industry to address agricultural import regulations, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and streamline Thai rice entry into the Philippine market, particularly specialty varieties such as jasmine rice, Pathum Thani fragrant rice, and other premium grades.

The department organized a business networking event at Benjarong Restaurant in Manila, which carries the Thai SELECT certification from the Ministry of Commerce. The event, attended by more than 60 people including the Thai Ambassador to the Philippines, representatives from Philippine importers associations, businesses, media, and social media influencers, showcased the quality of Thai rice and created opportunities to connect Thai exporters with Philippine importers.

This initiative is part of an aggressive rice export drive through public-private cooperation, involving monitoring partner country policies, trade facilitation, importer networking, and promotion of Thai rice strengths to maintain competitiveness amid intense price competition and economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

During the first six months of 2025, Thailand exported 295,939 tonnes of rice to the Philippines, a 110.47 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The breakdown includes white rice at 98.82 percent, Thai jasmine rice at 0.97 percent, sticky rice at 0.18 percent, and Thai fragrant rice at 0.03 percent.

The Philippine market continues to need rice imports to bolster food security, meet domestic consumption, and stabilize prices. While 25-percent-broken white rice remains the consumer favourite, demand for premium and specialty rice is rising, particularly in urban areas, restaurants, and hotels.

The department sees opportunities in soft-grain rice, price-competitive varieties, and new cultivars tailored to Philippine preferences, and is ready to support and facilitate Thai exporters in expanding their market reach. Full-year 2025 rice exports to the Philippines are projected to reach at least 600,000 tonnes.

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry and Thai Kom signed a memorandum of understanding on August 19 to develop technology innovation for managing natural resources and the environment. The initiative, led by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants, aims to deploy satellite technology, communications systems, geographic information systems, and artificial intelligence to strengthen forest protection, disaster monitoring, and wildlife conservation across Thailand and improve field operations to meet international standards.

Higher officials from the ministry, including Deputy Director-General Veera Khunchaiyarak and Conservation Head Sukhee Boonsrang, attended the signing ceremony. Permanent Secretary Raviwan Boridech emphasized that the partnership represents a crucial shift toward data-driven operations. The technology will not only protect forests and wildlife more effectively but also safeguard ranger safety in remote areas and address air pollution for public health. The department will use IoT systems and advanced geospatial analysis to monitor wildlife behavior in detail, including tracking wild elephants to reduce human-wildlife conflict, monitoring endangered marine species like dugongs, detecting forest fire hotspots, predicting wildfires and cross-border haze, and rapidly detecting illegal encroachment.

Thailand Kom Chief Executive Officer Piyawat Chariyaseritphong confirmed the company will apply its space technology expertise to convert past obstacles into practical solutions, including satellite communications systems, Globalstar technology, and IoT in areas with poor ground signal coverage. The organizations will establish working teams at the regional level, launch training programs to boost staff capabilities in deploying satellite data and AI systems for field command, and maintain the partnership for five years.

Taiwan Arrests Thai Woman Smuggling $3.6M in Heroin

Taiwan authorities arrested a 35-year-old Thai woman, a Muay Thai instructor, after she attempted to smuggle a large quantity of heroin into the country by hiding it in her body. She swallowed 72 heroin capsules, which took ten days to pass naturally, with a total weight of 289.1 grams worth approximately 3.6 million Taiwan dollars.

Kaohsiung Customs officials received intelligence about drug smuggling and set up surveillance on the Thai woman in advance. When she arrived at Kaohsiung Airport, officers immediately detained and searched her, then sent her to a hospital for detailed examination. X-ray results revealed numerous foreign objects in her abdomen. Further investigation confirmed they were heroin capsules wrapped in condoms and multiple layers of shrink film. She had swallowed these capsules to evade detection and smuggle drugs through the airport.

The capsules could only be removed through the body's natural process, requiring authorities to maintain continuous surveillance for ten days while managing her waste and recovering the expelled capsules. The case was transferred to Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office for prosecution under drug control laws. The prosecutor filed charges in July, and the Thai woman remains in custody pending trial.
