A tragic incident has struck the trail running community again. A male trail runner competing in a 25-kilometer race in Mae Sod District, Tak Province collapsed suddenly and died on September 19. A Facebook trail running group posted a tribute stating: "Rest in peace, male trail runner in the 25km race. Collapsed and lost consciousness at km 14. Running team members performed full CPR but were unable to save him."
According to initial investigation and accounts from runners at the scene, the deceased was competing in the 25-kilometer distance. At the 14-kilometer mark, in a forested, steep section of the course, he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. Fellow runners who came upon him immediately began first aid and performed CPR with full effort to try to save his life, but were unsuccessful. The runner died shortly after.
Additional information from race participants indicated that the race conditions and route were quite challenging. Heavy rain had fallen for a long period, leaving the ground slippery with mud throughout most of the course except on paved areas in the Mu Soe village zone. This made the running surface treacherous and required more physical exertion than normal.
The race organizers have issued a statement of regret over the incident. Meanwhile, many commenters have raised questions about whether it is time for event organizers to impose stricter requirements on running and trail race registrations, including proper health screening of runners, careful consideration of route difficulty levels to avoid excessive challenge, reasonable distance limits, and ensuring adequate medical personnel are on standby.
