The head of the Chonburi Tourism Association reported that approximately 5,000 servicemen from the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) aircraft carrier came ashore in Pattaya and Chonburi between September 2-6, 2025, providing a welcome boost to the city during its low season. Although the sailors were distributed across multiple days, their visit clearly energized the local economy, particularly benefiting restaurants, shopping centers, retail shops, tourist attractions, and hotel chains.
Observations showed that modern US military personnel have abandoned past stereotypes about nightlife and alcohol consumption, instead dispersing throughout the city to visit cultural attractions, the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, eat local cuisine, and shop at major malls. This broader range of activities has enhanced Pattaya's image as a diverse tourist destination beyond nighttime entertainment.
Association head Thanet Suphornsukhaseang estimated that with approximately 5,000 visitors spending 10,000-20,000 baht each, the total economic injection would reach 50-100 million baht. Most spending went toward shopping, dining, and tourism activities.
Thailand's tourism sector faces headwinds from seasonal fluctuations, international tensions, rising fuel and airfare costs, and increasing competition from regional rivals like Vietnam, which offer lower living costs and accommodation prices. Despite the brief nature of this military visit, it provided meaningful economic activity for Pattaya during the low season and demonstrated the city's diverse tourism offerings beyond nightlife.
