Wooden Shelter Collapses Into Canal, Trapping Ill Man

Rescue volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation responded at 2:30 p.m. on September 6, 2025, to reports of a residential structure collapsing into the canal along Phahonyothin Road in Sai Mai district, Bangkok. The collapsed section was a wooden shelter extension attached to a one-story house, which had partially given way and plunged into the water. A bedridden patient was found trapped under the wooden framework. Rescuers had to carefully dismantle the roof structure to safely extract the injured man, a difficult task complicated by sections of the shelter continuing to settle into the water and risk of further collapse. Water rescue equipment was ultimately used to assist in the extraction, and the patient was transported urgently to BC Care Hospital.

According to the owner's son, the house was built roughly 10 years ago, and the collapsed section was an extension built as a relaxation shelter. The injured man is the son's father, who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and is unable to care for himself. The son explained that he regularly helped his father sit in the shelter to get fresh air. At the time of the collapse, he had just finished bathing and was heading to retrieve pants from the rear of the house when he heard wooden beams cracking. Initially the sounds were not alarming, but they grew louder before the shelter suddenly collapsed into the water, causing the father, mother, and son to fall in. The son acknowledged the house is in poor condition with several areas at risk of further deterioration and said urgent repairs will be necessary to prevent future incidents.
