Wildlife Officers Bust Illegal Rosewood Smuggling Ring, Seize Over 1 Million Baht
20 Jul Khaosod

On July 19, 2025, Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin thanked officers at Phu Khiao Wildlife Sanctuary and all partner agencies for their successful crackdown on illegal rosewood harvesting in the protected forest. Working with Huai Yang police in Chaiyaphum Province, authorities arrested a smuggling network operating between Thai and Vietnamese nationals, seizing contraband worth over 1 million baht. The minister has ordered prosecutors to oppose bail for the suspects, as previous cases show accused persons in such matters often exploit bail to escape prosecution.

According to Arthapol Charoenchantsaa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the operation took place from July 18–19, 2025. Officers arrested five individuals: Thai nationals Pramote (age 47, from Udon Thani) and Wickom (age 52, from Uthai Thani), and three Vietnamese nationals named Nguyen (ages 45, 37, and 49).

The seizure included two vehicles—a white Toyota Hilux and a black Isuzu TFR—104 kilograms of rosewood, five mobile phones, and enforcement equipment stored in three blue bags. Authorities charged the suspects with nine criminal offenses under environmental and wildlife protection laws, including unauthorized entry into a protected wildlife area, degradation of natural resources, illegal extraction of protected timber, and unauthorized processing of forest products. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is listed as the injured party in the prosecution.

Why Thailand's Oil Prices Track Global Markets

Thailand imports 90% of its oil and pegs fuel prices to Singapore's regional market, which tracks global supply and demand driven by OPEC policies, geopolitical tensions, and economic conditions worldwide.

Why Thailand's Oil Prices Track Global Markets
20 Jul Khaosod

Oil prices matter to everyone because they affect daily life and the broader economy. Oil drives nearly all economic activity—from cars and buses to aircraft and industrial transport—making it a critical cost throughout the economic chain. When oil prices rise, transportation and production costs increase, pushing up prices for goods and services and raising the cost of living. Conversely, falling oil prices reduce business and transport costs, allowing the economy to move more smoothly. This means oil prices impact not just drivers but the entire economy and quality of life for all citizens.

Oil is a global commodity traded worldwide, with no single country setting its price alone. Major crude oil benchmarks include Dubai (Middle East), Brent (North Sea), and West Texas Intermediate or WTI (United States), which serve as regional price indicators. Key global oil trading markets include the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), London's Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), and Singapore's Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX)—the trading hub for refined oil in Asia. Prices in these markets reflect global supply and demand.

Many factors cause oil price swings: industrial and consumer demand, OPEC production policies, global economic crises, the rise of electric vehicles, and wars or geopolitical tensions. For example, conflict in oil-producing nations or disruptions to key shipping routes often spike prices immediately due to supply concerns, even if production hasn't actually stopped.

Thailand produces oil but not enough. Although Thailand has crude oil reserves in the Gulf of Thailand and refining capacity, output meets only about 10 percent of national demand. The remaining 90 percent must be imported, mainly from the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. For this reason, Thailand's refined fuel prices are pegged to Singapore market prices, which serve as the regional energy trading hub and standard for many Asian nations. Singapore prices reflect real market conditions, have high liquidity, and use internationally recognized pricing standards.

Opposition Leader Calls for Investigation Into Local Exam Corruption

Opposition leader Phakamon Nuntanatpong calls for a full investigation into civil service exam corruption, alleging the probe is narrowing scope to protect high-level officials and criticizing the lack of financial audits into bribery schem

Opposition Leader Calls for Investigation Into Local Exam Corruption
20 Jul Khaosod

On July 20, 2025, at the Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 hotel, opposition party leaders held a forum titled "Birth, Aging, Sickness, Corruption: How Can Thais Break This Cycle?" During a panel discussion on escaping systemic problems, Phakamon Nuntanatpong, opposition list MP and Pheu Thai Party spokesperson, highlighted the urgent need to overhaul the civil service examination system. She compared the ongoing exam corruption scandal to a compelling film whose ending remains uncertain—particularly whether those truly responsible will face justice.

Phakamon expressed deep concern that the investigation appears to be narrowing its scope to protect high-level figures, which could become the defining scandal that brings down the current government. She pointed out that local corruption in civil service exams occurs every year, with people paying bribes to secure positions. Those making payments are often influential local politicians seeking to "buy" specific exam scores to prevent answer changes or displacements of higher bidders.

She criticized the selective nature of the investigation, noting that only five officials from the Interior Ministry face serious disciplinary action and only three have been formally charged so far. Most troublingly, no government agency has yet requested a financial audit. She called on Interior Minister Anutin (the first Anutin) to contact Prime Minister Anutin (the second Anutin) to order the investigation, expressing frustration that when both figures share the same name and position, obstacles seem to multiply rather than disappear.

Meanwhile, opposition MP Wisut Tantinanthan discussed combating corruption through the Procurement Act 3.0, which aims to establish transparent government procurement rules and eliminate conflicts of interest. He identified problems in premium contractor schemes that create opportunities for cartels and government-to-government procurement without competitive bidding.

Thailand Tackles Rise in Young Heart Attack Patients

Thailand Tackles Rise in Young Heart Attack Patients
20 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's public health ministry is alerting hospitals to an increase in acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases among younger patients, and is accelerating upgrades to the cardiac disease network through the STEMI ONE initiative, targeting three strategic directions: faster access, standardized care, and heart disease prevention across all age groups.

On July 20, 2025, Health Minister Pattana Prommapan revealed that in every second a STEMI patient faces crisis, time is the most critical factor in saving lives. This year marks the first time Thailand has succeeded in reducing in-hospital mortality rates below the health ministry's target—a significant achievement for the Thai health system. The ministry's next steps will pursue the vision "access quickly, uniform standards, safe hearts at all ages" through three main strategies: (1) deploying artificial intelligence to read electrocardiograms aboard ambulances, reducing time from patient detection to diagnosis before hospital arrival; (2) launching active campaigns targeting younger and male populations to modify health behaviors and prevent new cases; and (3) standardizing acute coronary intervention protocols nationwide through STEMI ONE, ensuring timely, equitable treatment across all regions.

Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry Dr. Somrukt Chungsaman emphasized coordination among provincial health offices, regional hospitals, and general hospitals nationwide, with particular focus on preparing medical personnel—specialists, nurses, and paramedics—to deliver efficient, rapid, and safe care and reduce mortality equally across all areas.

Director-General of the Medical Department Dr. Natthapong Vongvivat cited data from the Thai ACS registry showing a continuous decline in STEMI mortality: 9.01% in 2024, 8.0% in 2025, and 7.85% in 2026—achieving the national target of no more than 8.0%. Analysis of approximately 11,000 patients yearly reveals concerning trends: males account for 75% of cases (3:1 ratio over females). While most patients are aged 50–70, early working-age groups (21–40 years) now represent 4–5% of cases, and patients under 20 account for 0.1–0.5%, with the youngest reported case in Thailand being just 15 years old from Udon Thani province.

This data demonstrates that acute coronary syndrome is no longer solely an elderly condition; younger people, particularly working-age males with smoking habits, abdominal obesity, and chronic stress, now face significant risk.

20 Jul Khaosod

On July 20, 2025, the Samut Prakan Provincial Court handed down a verdict in the case of Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, who refused to participate in mandatory military conscription on April 5, 2024. The court determined that prosecution evidence was credible in proving the defendant failed to report for military service. The court rejected his constitutional defense based on religious beliefs, ruling that the Military Service Act does not violate the Constitution and that such beliefs do not constitute a legal exemption. Netiwit was found guilty under sections 27 and 45 of the Military Service Act. The court sentenced him to six months imprisonment but suspended the sentence for one year, given that he has no prior criminal record. No reporting requirement was imposed.

Robot's Head Flies Off But It Keeps Fighting
20 Jul Khaosod

The world's first full-contact humanoid robot fighting league has launched with dramatic flair in Shenzhen, China, when a robot named Matador was kicked so forcefully its head detached during a match against White Eagle—yet it kept punching and kicking as if nothing happened.

The incident occurred during the Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL), billed as the world's first full-contact humanoid robot combat competition. White Eagle landed a powerful high kick that knocked Matador's head loose from its socket, leaving it dangling from the body. Despite severe damage, Matador continued exchanging punches and kicks, stunning the audience with its ability to maintain balance and motor control. The video went viral globally within hours.

The match ended when Matador fell forward, its own weight crushing its head, which then completely separated from the body, causing it to lose balance and be unable to continue fighting. White Eagle celebrated with a dance and posed on stage as Matador was removed by officials.

Both robots use the EngineAI T800, named after the Terminator cyborg, which features fluid movement and MMA-inspired fighting skills including combinations of punches, spinning kicks, and coordinated strikes. Teams can customize armor, control systems, and engineering structures to enhance performance.

The URKL attracted over 200 teams from 10 countries, with 32 advancing to the main rounds. Winners are judged not only on knocking opponents down but also on movement control, balance, environmental awareness, decision-making, power systems, and structural durability—making it as much a technology test as a sport.

The 2026 season will run through late in the year, with qualifiers in July and August leading to finals. The champion will receive a championship belt and prize money worth 10 million yuan (approximately 50 million baht), marking a significant milestone for robotics competition.

Bangkok Expands Early Childhood Centers to Accept Infants From 3 Months

Bangkok is lowering the enrollment age at early childhood centers to 3 months, part of new regulations designed to expand access to quality childcare for working parents and boost early child development citywide.

Bangkok Expands Early Childhood Centers to Accept Infants From 3 Months
20 Jul Khaosod

Bangkok is preparing to expand its early childhood development centers to accept infants as young as 3 months old, addressing urban society's need for quality childcare and accelerating early child development from infancy.

On July 20, 2025, at the Din Daeng District Office, Sanon Wang Saangbun, Bangkok's Deputy Governor, chaired a learning exchange forum to gather feedback on the proposed Bangkok Regulation on Early Childhood Development Centers. Participants included administrators from the Social Development Office, Din Daeng District officials, and teachers from early childhood centers.

Sanon explained that the forum was designed to give frontline teachers the opportunity to contribute ideas and help shape new regulations that align with real conditions—rather than having rules imposed unilaterally by government. He stressed that effective regulations should emerge from collaborative input across all sectors, enabling more efficient early childhood care.

Bangkok currently has 239,413 children aged 0-6 years, with birth rates declining steadily. However, many children—particularly those aged 0-3—still lack access to quality care because most parents work full-time and there are insufficient childcare facilities. This leaves many young children without proper early developmental opportunities.

Sanon emphasized that early childhood development must begin in infancy because waiting until children are 4-5 years old may be too late for effective developmental support. The new regulations aim to address this gap by allowing early childhood centers to accept children from 3 months old, expanded from the previous age range of 2-6 years. The regulations will also set appropriate care standards for each age group and adjust caregiver-to-child ratios to suit younger children.

Additionally, Bangkok plans to support extended service hours at these centers to accommodate working parents with nonstandard schedules, while ensuring caregivers receive fair compensation for work outside standard office hours.

Sanon noted that Bangkok currently operates 258 early childhood centers, but only 39 can use city budget funds for facility improvements due to land-use restrictions. The city is coordinating with landowners—including temples, the Treasury Department, the National Housing Authority, and private sector entities—to enable ongoing center development.

Bangkok is also implementing quality-improvement measures including dust-free classrooms, proactive child development screening and assessments, professional development for caregivers, educational support to enhance qualifications, free-play activities, reading programs, and toy-lending services to promote proper early childhood development.

Sanon outlined three main pillars of the new regulations: expanding access to early childhood services, improving the quality of childcare, and supporting parents. The regulations will broaden budget-support criteria to cover materials, utilities, operational costs, and caregiver compensation, enabling centers to deliver quality care that meets current urban society's needs.

Bangkok welcomes all suggestions from childcare teachers and is committed to refining the regulations for maximum benefit and shared progress.
