Woman Exposes Man's Repeat Hitchhike Scam in Samut Sakhon
A woman in Samut Sakhon exposed a repeat scammer who poses as a stranded traveler seeking rides and money, after recognizing his deception when he used the same tricks on her twice with conflicting stories about his destination.
In tough economic times when jobs are scarce and living costs exceed earnings, many people have resorted to walking home in desperation. While Thai people are generally compassionate and quick to help those in need—offering money or rides—some unscrupulous individuals exploit this kindness.
On September 4, a young woman posted a photo of a middle-aged man sitting in the back of her pickup truck after she gave him a ride to Samut Sakhon. She explained that he had flagged down many vehicles before she picked him up. When she reached his destination, he asked for money for the ride and food, claiming he hadn't eaten since morning. She gave him a bottle of water instead, offering only what she could spare. He showed no gratitude and hurried her away.
Later, the woman realized the man had deceived her. He had previously told her his home was in the south and tricked her into driving him to Pran Buri intersection, where he then asked for money to return south. She had given him 300 baht out of sympathy. This time, when he claimed he was returning to Samut Sakhon, she gave him another ride but refused to give him money, saying she now knew his tricks. She warned him that if they met again, she would take him to the police station instead.
After her post went viral, many Facebook users commented and revealed they had been scammed by the same man using identical tactics.
