Court Dismisses Former Phuket Official's Defamation Lawsuit

A Phuket court dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by a former provincial official against a landowner who accused him of demanding bribes, ruling the case was brought in bad faith to silence corruption allegations.

Court Dismisses Former Phuket Official's Defamation Lawsuit
31 Jul Khaosod

On July 31, 2569, the Criminal Court at Ratchadamri Road issued a ruling dismissing the defamation case filed by Rungruang Thimabut, former Permanent Secretary of Phuket Province, against a local landowner. The plaintiff had accused the defendant of filing a false report and defamation related to an allegation that he had demanded one million baht in exchange for altering land documents. However, the court found that while the plaintiff acknowledged receiving the one million baht transfer into a personal account he had specified, he produced no clear legal evidence of a loan agreement supporting his claim. The court determined that the lawsuit showed signs of being brought in bad faith, particularly because the defendant had disclosed alleged corruption and misconduct by the plaintiff to police while he served as Permanent Secretary. Under Criminal Procedure Code Section 161/1, the court ruled that the plaintiff's claims lacked sincere intent and were designed to achieve ends beyond legitimate legal remedies. The dismissal is notable as the first such case where a criminal court has rejected a complaint at the examination stage without proceeding to trial, citing bad faith prosecution. The ruling follows a May 30, 2569 directive from Supreme Court President Adisak Tantiwongse providing guidance on addressing insincere prosecution in criminal cases, aimed at preventing the courts from being weaponized against those who honestly expose misconduct or restrict freedom of speech.

Actor C Pruksachai Opens First SUPER SUN Pop-Up Store in Thailand
31 Jul Khaosod

The SUPER SUN pop-up store, owned by actor C Pruksachai, officially opened for the first time in Thailand on July 31 at Siam Center's Atrium 2 on the ground floor, running through August 9, 2026. The actor personally attended the grand opening and shared his excitement about seeing his brand, which he has spent over three years developing and designing with personal input on every detail, finally materialize in physical retail form.

C revealed that the pop-up launch represents a major milestone for the brand, which previously operated exclusively online and held two pop-up events in Japan. He admitted to losing sleep before opening day due to a mix of excitement and anxiety, but expressed immense pride in the finished product and gratitude for his family's encouragement. The pop-up investment exceeded six figures, reflecting his commitment to giving customers a full sensory experience of the brand's identity and craftsmanship.

When asked about his design philosophy, C explained that every aspect of the brand stems from his personal creative vision, though he works with a dedicated team. He noted that while he dreams of opening a permanent flagship store, the pop-up format allows flexibility as the brand expands. Looking ahead, he plans to host pop-ups annually in Thailand and has already scheduled a showcase (not a pop-up) in South Korea next month. He expressed deep satisfaction when fans wear his brand's clothing, which he designs to give each wearer their own unique identity. The actor also credited his family, particularly his mother who came to offer prayers at the venue, for their unwavering support throughout the three-year journey from concept to opening day.

31 Jul Khaosod

Lifeguards at Patong Beach rescued a stranded dolphin and coordinated with the Andaman Sea Resources Research and Development Center in Phuket on July 31, 2025. The lifeguards quickly assessed the animal and provided initial emergency care, spraying water to keep it moist and covering it with wet cloths to reduce heat stress while closely monitoring its condition and waiting for specialists to arrive.

Initially, the lifeguards maintained a suitable environment to minimize the dolphin's stress and cordoned off the area to prevent public contact or disturbance. The research center staff are now collecting the dolphin to transport it to a care facility, where they will conduct a full health examination and assess its condition. If the animal is physically healthy and ready to return to nature, it will be released back to the sea.

Authorities are calling on the public to report any sightings of stranded or injured rare marine animals such as dolphins, whales, dugongs, or sea turtles to relevant officials immediately. They emphasized avoiding any attempt to move the animals or feed them yourself, as proper professional care significantly improves the animal's chances of recovery and safe return to its natural habitat.

YouTube will continue paying ad revenue from travel vlogger Hulun Solo's videos to his family for up to 50 years under Thai copyright law, with viewer engagement directly supporting them.

YouTube Continues Paying Hulun Solo's Family Through Ad Revenue
31 Jul Khaosod

YouTube will continue to pay ad revenue from Hulun Solo's travel videos to his family, with viewers effectively helping support them by watching his clips. Armon Sruaptweedham, director of the Department of Intellectual Property, explained copyright protections following the death of travel YouTuber Hulun Solo in Georgia.

Videos created by Hulun Solo that are advertised receive copyright protection for 50 years from their first publication on YouTube, under Section 21 of the Copyright Act B.E. 2537. Copyright is treated as property that can be transferred or inherited just like houses, cars, bank deposits, and land.

When a copyright owner dies, if they have left a will, copyright rights pass to the named beneficiary. If there is no will, copyright rights pass to legal heirs in order of inheritance: children, parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and spouses—all of whom are considered legal heirs.

This means YouTube will continue paying advertising revenue from Hulun Solo's videos as long as they receive views, with all income going directly to his family. Viewers can now help support Hulun's family simply by watching his videos to completion on YouTube.

PTT Exploration Reports 39 Billion Baht Profit, Declares 4.50 Baht Dividend
31 Jul Khaosod

PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) showcased first-half 2025 results with revenue of 176.756 billion baht, net profit of 39.032 billion baht, and an interim dividend of 4.50 baht per share, while ramping up gas production to support the country during energy crises. CEO Montri Rawwaloychaikul reported that petroleum sales volume averaged 563,179 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up 14% year-on-year, with average selling prices at $49.54 per barrel, up 10% in line with global crude oil trends. Despite Middle East tensions creating uncertainty in global energy markets, the company sustained domestic natural gas production at approximately 2,680 million cubic feet per day, surpassing contractual delivery obligations of 2,500 million cubic feet per day to meet national energy demand, minimize impacts on consumers and industry, and strengthen energy security.

Based on strong operational and financial performance, the board approved an interim dividend of 4.50 baht per share, with the ex-dividend date set for August 14, 2025, and payment scheduled for August 28, 2025. In the first half, the company remitted over 27.7 billion baht to the state through taxes, royalties, and other benefit-sharing arrangements, as well as revenue from the G1/61 and G2/61 production-sharing contracts that can support national development initiatives.

On sustainable business operations, PTTEP achieved a first-time success in Thailand by repurposing an expired offshore petroleum platform through circular economy principles, reducing costs, resource consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The company also partnered with the Fisheries Department and Department of Primary Industries to convert 9 decommissioned platform jackets into artificial coral reefs in the Gulf of Thailand to restore marine ecosystems and increase aquatic wildlife habitats, with operations set to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

Thailand Unveils Five Investment Strategies to Boost GDP Above 3%

Thailand's government approved five investment strategies targeting GDP growth above 3%, including AI and digital hubs, green energy, and financial services to attract capital and restructure the economy.

Thailand Unveils Five Investment Strategies to Boost GDP Above 3%
31 Jul Khaosod

The government is pursuing a comprehensive economic restructuring through five new investment strategies aimed at attracting capital to emerging industries, removing investment obstacles, and positioning Thailand as a regional investment hub, with a target to drive economic growth above 3%.

Narudom Thaoedsthirsakdi, secretary-general of the Board of Investment (BOI), announced that a subcommittee meeting on new investment development, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekachai Nitithamrong, approved a framework for implementing five new investment strategies. The measures seek to accelerate economic restructuring, enhance the country's competitive capabilities, and position Thailand as a key regional investment destination.

Ekachai stated that the global economy is undergoing transformation driven by geopolitical factors, AI technology, digital economy, aging societies, and green economy. Thailand must urgently reduce investment barriers, restructure its economy, and build investor confidence to seize opportunities from the global shift in manufacturing bases and supply chains.

The initiative sets targets to grow the economy beyond 3%, increase total investment to 30% of GDP, and raise Thailand's global competitiveness ranking to the top 20 through promotion of high-potential industries and infrastructure development.

The five core strategies are: 1. Investment and Industry Transformation Hub—upgrading existing industries and creating new ones, with accelerated approvals through Thailand FastPass 2. AI & Digital Hub—attracting investment in AI, semiconductors, and chips, targeting 100 billion baht in investment by 2027 3. Green Hub—promoting clean energy, smart electrical systems, and carbon markets 4. Financial Hub—developing Thailand as a regional financial services center 5. Medical Investment Hub—elevating Thailand as a high-value medical manufacturing and innovation base

Ekachai emphasized that implementation will pursue both quick-win and big-win measures with clearly assigned responsibility units, timelines, and performance indicators. Five dedicated task forces will be established to drive each strategy toward concrete results, with the overarching goal of transforming Thailand's economic engine toward technology, innovation, clean energy, and quality investment-driven growth while creating jobs, enhancing Thai entrepreneurship, and sustainably integrating into global supply chains.

Thai Rice Curry Subsidy Program Stalls Amid Public Backlash

Thailand's ambitious 40-baht rice curry subsidy program has stalled before launch due to public and business backlash, prompting the Commerce Ministry to redesign the initiative addressing rising meal costs that have jumped 5-33% nationwide

Thai Rice Curry Subsidy Program Stalls Amid Public Backlash
31 Jul Khaosod

The "Thai Rice Curry Helps Thailand" initiative by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachai Suthammaphand, aimed at offering affordable 40-baht meals, has collapsed before launch following intense backlash from the public, restaurant owners, and private sector. The Commerce Ministry has postponed cabinet submission to allow relevant agencies to review and redesign the program appropriately.

This issue has drawn wide public attention because rice curry meals are integral to the lifestyle of all working Thais, particularly salaried employees, serving as a barometer of living costs. Price fluctuations directly impact daily household expenses. Although the Commerce Ministry delayed the cabinet submission, Supachai insisted the project is not scrapped but needs proper redesign, noting that the idea emerged from public requests for government assistance with cost-of-living pressures.

Rice curry reflects living cost pressure

The Commerce Ministry prioritized addressing rice curry prices based on data from the Trade Policy and Strategy Office showing nationwide prices have risen continuously by an average of 5-10 baht per plate, increasing public expenses and inflation. June 2025 inflation rose 2.42%, the third consecutive monthly increase. Seven menu items show price hikes: fried rice, stir-fried soy sauce noodles, red pork rice, chicken rice with gravy, papaya salad, noodles, and basil-fried rice. Of 1,535 surveyed establishments, 438 raised prices (28.53%), with 182 increasing by 5 baht and 244 by 10 baht; some items jumped 8-33%, such as papaya salad rising from 30 to 40 baht, justifying government intervention.

Opening pathways for new model review

Following the suspension, Withayakorn Moneenat, Director-General of the Internal Trade Department, consulted with restaurant operators, wet markets, and the Thai Restaurant Association to gather proposals and determine current industry problems and needed government support to reduce operator costs while genuinely benefiting consumers.

Consumers must await clarity from the Commerce Ministry on the revised "Thai Rice Curry Helps Thailand" program's format, conditions, timeline, and concrete cost-of-living impact.

Policy design challenge

From a policy perspective, "Thai Rice Curry Helps Thailand" aims clearly to reduce living cost burdens, especially short-term, as food is a daily necessity. However, careful policy design must address multiple stakeholders—consumers, restaurant operators, raw material producers, and supply chain participants. Solutions should target costs rather than selling prices, with proposals that the Commerce Ministry should develop appropriate measures.

Thailand Launches Forest Ranger Support Policy With Rehabilitation Centers

Thailand's government launched a support policy for forest rangers on World Ranger Day, establishing rehabilitation centers and enhancing welfare for the 22,450 officers protecting the nation's forests and natural resources.

Thailand Launches Forest Ranger Support Policy With Rehabilitation Centers
31 Jul Khaosod

Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin has announced the government's 'Protect Forest, Preserve Life' policy and ordered the rapid establishment of rehabilitation and recovery centers for forest rangers, while enhancing safety standards and providing comprehensive welfare support.

On July 31, 2025, marking World Ranger Day, Minister Suchat presided over the opening ceremony at Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Nayok province. He announced the government's commitment to improving quality of life, safety, and welfare for frontline rangers and pledged to establish recovery centers for injured officers. The event drew over 800 forest rangers from three main agencies, along with representatives from international organizations and the private sector.

Minister Suchat disclosed that Thailand's Environment Ministry currently employs 22,450 forest rangers protecting forests, marine resources, and watersheds nationwide. Despite their critical role in ecosystem conservation, these officers face grave dangers from natural disasters and illegal logging operations. In the 2568-2569 fiscal year, 17 rangers lost their lives in the line of duty.

In response, the ministry has tasked its executives to work with partner networks and the private sector to establish the rehabilitation centers as quickly as possible. These centers will provide medical treatment, recovery care for injured officers, and support for the families of fallen rangers, including educational funding and quality-of-life assistance.

"Every forest ranger is the heart of our nation's natural resource conservation," Minister Suchat emphasized. "Their work protects not just forests but ecosystems, water sources, and the security of all Thai people. The ministry will not abandon anyone and stands ready to provide full welfare support."

Beyond welfare measures, the minister revealed that the ministry is introducing modern technology and innovation to enhance patrol operations and reduce risks to personnel. These include high-resolution camera drones, forest fire-fighting equipment drones, automatic camera traps (NCAPS), forest management systems (IForMS), and satellite monitoring in coordination with GISTDA, as well as a wildlife crime database (iBase) for strengthened law enforcement.

The Environment Ministry aims to integrate all sectors—government, private enterprise, and the international community—to raise ranger safety and welfare standards to the highest level, creating a foundation for effective forest protection across the country.
