Teacher's Parents Receive Body After School Shooting
8 Aug Khaosod

On August 8, 2026, the atmosphere at the Police Hospital's Institute of Forensic Medicine remained somber as relatives arrived to collect the body of Tiwaporn Wanit, a 19-year-guidance counselor from Nakhon Luang District, Ayutthaya, who was killed in the shooting at Thepsirin School in Nonthaburi on August 7. Her parents and extended family came to arrange religious rites. As relatives processed documents with forensic officials, her mother sat by the incense stand, devastated and unable to accept the loss, saying she could not eat or sleep the previous night. The body was to be taken for cremation at Tat Hnaad Temple in Nakhon Luang, duration to be determined.

Officals informed the parents of compensation under Thai law: 300,000 baht for death, plus medical expenses for the injured. Minor injuries treated and healed within seven days receive 10,000 baht; hospitalization costs are covered per receipt. Mental health support is also provided for those affected, with medical certification required to claim counseling expenses.

When officials explained the compensation amount, her father immediately responded, "What good is 300,000 baht—return my daughter's life to me?" His wife grabbed his knee to calm him as he wept throughout. Officials expressed understanding of the family's loss and pledged to expedite the payment within approximately one week.

Meanwhile, the suspect's uncle—grandson of Somjit and Phantip and holder of familial relation to the deceased perpetrator—also came to claim his relatives' bodies. He declined to comment at present and said he was unaware of fabricated social media messages allegedly exchanged between the shooter and his mother.

NAKHON NAYOK — A 24-year-old man was warned by police after being caught smoking cannabis on the grounds of Nakhon Nayok Hospital on August 7, 2026.

At around 10:30 a.m., the hospital's security guards spotted the man sitting at a stone table near the obstetrics and gynaecology building, close to the hospital canteen, and contacted police.

Police and hospital staff questioned him about smoking cannabis in the hospital compound, where smoking is prohibited. A search of his bag uncovered a packet of cannabis and a knife, which officers seized. The man also led officers to a homemade smoking device made from a modified plastic bottle that he had hidden under a tree near the hospital wall.

Official warned him that smoking cannabis in the hospital grounds was inappropriate. The man apologised to police and hospital staff and promised not to repeat the behaviour. He was not charged and was allowed to leave after officers learned that he had been at the hospital to care for his sick mother, who was receiving treatment there.

A security guard said he had initially warned the man and photographed the incident before contacting police. The man admitted smoking cannabis and apologised, while staff decided not to pursue the matter after learning about his mother's condition.

Ex-PM Thaksin Urges Society to Listen, Not Isolate Bullying Victims

Former PM Thaksin called for society to listen to bullying victims rather than isolate them, following a school shooting that prompted many youth to share their untold experiences of harassment and exclusion.

Ex-PM Thaksin Urges Society to Listen, Not Isolate Bullying Victims
8 Aug Khaosod

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra posted on Facebook about the shooting at Thepsirin Nonthaburi School, saying the incident has shaken the nation. Following the tragedy, many children and youth have come forward sharing their bullying experiences, many of which were previously unknown. Thaksin stated that bullying encompasses more than physical force or harsh words—it includes ignoring others, exclusion, ridicule, humiliation, and making someone feel worthless. These invisible wounds can linger for years. Schools should be safe spaces, families should be places of listening, and society should never leave anyone facing problems alone. Thaksin added a message to young people: differences are not justification for harm. Everyone is born different but everyone has value and deserves equal respect. To adults, he urged greater listening, observation, and faster intervention, as timely help can change a child's life. "No words or actions justify making someone lose faith in themselves. A good society is not measured by the absence of problems, but by our refusal to ignore each other's suffering. I express my condolences to all those affected," Thaksin concluded.

Thailand Earmarks 50-60 Billion Baht for Solar Rooftop Energy Transition

Thailand will allocate 50-60 billion baht for residential solar rooftop installations as part of a broader 200-billion-baht energy transition initiative funded from emergency borrowing, with government banks providing financing support.

Thailand Earmarks 50-60 Billion Baht for Solar Rooftop Energy Transition
8 Aug Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanpraphas stated that 200 billion baht from the remaining portion of the government's 400-billion-baht emergency loan decree will be dedicated to energy transition projects. Of the first 200-billion-baht tranche, approximately 40 billion baht currently remains. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed that the situation be assessed carefully given budget constraints, with priority placed on meaningful energy transition initiatives.

When asked about the Ministry of Tourism and Sports allocating 1.75-2 billion baht from the emergency loan for the "Thai Help Thai Plus" tourism project, Ekniti stated that the allocation was not excessive and must align with the program's objectives of assisting merchants. He acknowledged that while surplus funds exist, spending must serve the intended purpose effectively.

Regarding potential criticism that the tourism project may not align with the urgent necessity requirement of emergency borrowing, Ekniti indicated the situation requires further assessment. He confirmed that while it is legally possible to redirect the 200-billion-baht energy transition portion to extend the Thai Help Thai Plus program, the government prefers to reserve it for energy transition goals.

Ekniti confirmed that 50-60 billion baht will fund the solar rooftop program to help citizens transition to solar energy, with Government Savings Bank and Government Housing Bank providing financing support. He emphasized the necessity of comprehensive energy transition given Thailand's heavy reliance on oil and natural gas, including upgrades to smart meters and transmission systems to prevent widespread outages during grid transitions, as seen in some foreign countries.

Additionally, the government plans transportation sector transition by converting public buses to electric vehicles across seven categories, though detailed implementation and budgets have not yet been finalized. Ekniti also discussed a meeting with Grab Holdings executives who acknowledged the Thai Help Thai Plus project's AI system development, similar to the Whisper Bird application, which increased merchant sales by over 68 percent, demonstrating how the "Plus" component enhances business performance.

Thailand Shifts Security Model After School Shooting

Thailand is shifting its security approach following a school shooting, moving from viewing safety as purely a police responsibility to treating citizens as security partners who can prevent attacks at schools, malls, and hospitals.

Thailand Shifts Security Model After School Shooting
8 Aug Khaosod

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nopphol Kannika, a national police policy board member and lecturer in peace innovation at Siam Technology College, said the Thepsirin School shooting in Nonthaburi deeply shook Thai society because schools should be the safest spaces for children and youth. The incident raises not only the question "How will police handle such attacks?" but the larger question "How do we prevent this from happening again?"

Kannika argued that Thailand must shift its security mindset from viewing safety as solely a police responsibility to adopting the concept of "police and public as security partners." Police cannot be stationed at every street corner, school, mall, hospital, or public gathering space, but teachers, employees, medical staff, business owners, and community members are already present in those locations and know them best. If these people have proper knowledge, communication systems, and connections to police, they become a crucial force for prevention before crises escalate.

This approach aligns with research on school shootings that Kannika studied during graduate work in risk management and strategy at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and with Thailand's current community-based prevention initiatives for "soft targets" such as malls, schools, hospitals, and entertainment venues. The key concept is not to turn citizens into police, but to make them "aware of threats, know how to report, know how to escape, and know how to coordinate with police."

Kannika noted that police leadership is measured not only by quick response during crises but by the ability to "build prevention systems before incidents occur" and by genuinely including the public in safety structures. With limited police personnel, public participation has become essential and should be elevated to national policy through the "modern-era volunteer police" concept and gun control policies championed by Prime Minister Anuthm Chaiyaveerakul and implemented by Police Deputy Commander Kittiratte Phandpet, reflecting alignment between policy leaders and operational leaders in placing citizens at the center of security systems.

Thailand Freezes LPG Price at 423 Baht to Support Purchasing Power

Thailand has frozen LPG prices at 423 baht per 15-kilogram tank to ease household and business costs amid economic recovery efforts, with the government increasing fuel fund subsidies to offset global market fluctuations.

Thailand Freezes LPG Price at 423 Baht to Support Purchasing Power
8 Aug Khaosod

Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek stated on August 8 that the administration remains committed to managing the public's cost of living, citing the June 2025 consumer confidence index rising to 50.2 for the first time in four months. This figure reflects recovery in purchasing power from government measures, but with the economy still fragile, the administration must work simultaneously on income supplementation, expense relief, and energy price control to prevent daily hardship.

Rather than using single-track stimulus, the government employs a bundle of measures and the Thai Help Thai Plus program, which circulates approximately one trillion baht through the economy, reduces living costs, and distributes funds to grassroots communities nationwide. Ratchada emphasized that Thai Help Thai Plus ensures money does not concentrate in Bangkok alone—with only 15–16 percent of spending occurring there—demonstrating that funds reach other provinces, small businesses, and genuine communities.

Meanwhile, the Energy Ministry continues using the fuel fund mechanism to cap liquified petroleum gas (LPG) prices against global market fluctuations by increasing compensation from 7.2209 baht per kilogram to 9.8642 baht per kilogram, keeping the retail price at 423 baht per 15-kilogram tank. Freezing LPG prices directly impacts households, restaurants, and small traders, as cooking gas is a household and business cost; rising energy prices would immediately cascade to food, goods, and service prices.

The government acknowledges the cost of energy price controls: the fuel fund balance stood at minus 71,826.31 million baht on August 7, up approximately 2,044 million baht from the previous week, requiring careful management. "The government is doing its utmost to manage the cost of living within the nation's fiscal capacity, aiming to circulate money to the grassroots, achieve stable economic recovery, and leave no one behind," the spokesperson said.

Man Shot Eight Times in Home Attack Before Daughter

A 43-year-old man was shot eight times in his home in Phitsanulok Province on August 7 after a suspect, believed to be a retired officer with a grudge, opened fire while the victim's wife and daughter were present.

Man Shot Eight Times in Home Attack Before Daughter
8 Aug Khaosod

At approximately 9 p.m. on August 7, Phitsanulok City Police received a report of an armed attack. A suspect aged 65-70, wearing a black shirt under denim, shorts, and a brown backpack, arrived on a black Honda Wave motorcycle near a pork barbecue restaurant on Bian Jan Soi, Thung Nam-Makham Tia Road, Moo 6, Hua Ro Subdistrict, Muang District, Phitsanulok Province. He then fired eight shots at Pramesuan, 43, of Moo 7, Khan Chong Subdistrict, Wat Boset District, Phitsanulok, who was watching television with his wife and 7-year-old daughter.

Pramesuan spotted the gunman arriving and immediately fled with his daughter to the back of the shop as the attacker drew his weapon. The suspect pursued them and fired three to four more rounds, while the wife and daughter escaped another direction. The attacker then remained inside the victim's home briefly before fleeing, appearing to be intoxicated.

After the gunman left, Pramesuan emerged and called police immediately. Rescue volunteers arrived and administered first aid to wounds in his right ribcage before transferring him to Bangkok Phitsanulok Hospital. Investigators believe the suspect is a retired police officer with personal grievances against the victim, who had consumed alcohol before carrying out the attack. Security cameras clearly recorded the incident. Police are actively pursuing the suspect for prosecution.

School Shooting a Warning Sign, Thailand Must Build Prevention Systems
8 Aug Khaosod

Deputy Democratic Party leader Radchadao Intavangsuwankiri has posted on Facebook expressing condolences to families affected by the school shooting at Thepsirindr School in Nonthaburi, calling the incident a warning signal about escalating youth violence and mental health problems that Thai society must urgently confront.

Radchadao noted that Thai society has repeatedly witnessed cases of children and youth experiencing stress, self-harm, suicide, or violence toward others, with violence now spreading into educational institutions and affecting both teachers and students. "We must seriously ask what adults are doing, and how many more people must we lose before we act?" she said.

Radchadao emphasized that Thailand should prioritize building prevention systems rather than reacting after incidents occur. She advocated for mental health awareness, early warning sign recognition, violence prevention, bullying intervention strategies, and safe reporting channels to be embedded in educational systems. She stressed that most violence cases show warning signs beforehand, so teachers, students, and parents need to recognize these signals and have the courage to report them before it is too late.

Radchadao argued that this is not a problem of children or teachers alone but a systemic issue involving families, schools, communities, and government. She called for building a comprehensive "learning ecosystem" where children, teachers, and parents do not face these challenges in isolation. "We should not wait for more deaths to hold meetings, we should not wait for the next teacher to post they cannot take it anymore, and we should not wait for another child to pick up a weapon before asking why no one knew," she concluded, noting that warning signs have been present for years.
