Thailand Opens Mega Halal Bangkok 2026 Summit
21h ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anusit Chanyawiwatkul officially opened Mega Halal Bangkok 2026 to position Thailand's halal industry as the center of ASEAN's economic development, reinforcing its role as the world's kitchen. The ceremony took place at 11 a.m. on July 15, 2026 at Hall 8 of the Sirikit National Convention Centre.

The Prime Minister stated that the event occurs during a period of major global economic transformation caused by climate change, geopolitical uncertainty, and supply chain instability, which are reshaping the world food landscape and making food security a crucial challenge. He noted that consumers today demand greater scrutiny of their purchases, seeking to know product origins, production methods, and trustworthiness. Consequently, "trust" has become one of the most economically valuable factors, encompassing confidence in quality, standards, safety, and the producers behind products—all values reflected in the halal economy.

Anusit explained that halal has evolved far beyond a religious certification mark and become an internationally recognized standard encompassing quality, integrity, traceability, and consumer confidence—benefits that extend beyond Muslim consumers to anyone seeking assurance in their purchases.

The halal economy is one of the world's fastest-growing sectors. For Thailand, this represents more than an expanding market opportunity; it is a chance to strengthen the nation's food system, build high-value industries, support farmers and entrepreneurs, and contribute to global food security.

Thailand has long been recognized as the "world's kitchen," and today it is building on this strength toward a broader vision: becoming a "Trusted Global Food Security Partner" capable of supplying food, products, and services that people worldwide can rely on. The halal economy stands as a key pillar of this vision.

Thailand is also well-positioned to become ASEAN's halal economic hub and a bridge between Southeast Asia and the Muslim world, leveraging its strategic location, promising food industry, world-class manufacturing standards, internationally recognized healthcare and medical sectors, and modern transportation infrastructure.

The Prime Minister emphasized that being a hub depends not solely on geography but on trustworthiness, consistently high standards, and strong cooperation. Thailand is therefore investing continuously to upgrade halal standards, advance scientific research, strengthen certification systems, improve logistics and digital trade, and drive innovation.

Government support also extends to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and new entrepreneurs, enabling them to participate in the global halal economic value chain. The Prime Minister is confident that the halal economy's growth will benefit businesses of all sizes.

Anusit added that Mega Halal Bangkok is not merely a product exhibition.

A Facebook user named Panomporn Suanboon posted dashcam footage complaining about an employee shuttle bus that cut her off and nearly caused an accident near a PTT gas station in Nakhon Luang District, Ayutthaya, around 7:55 a.m. on July 14, 2026. The post describes how while driving in the left lane at normal speed, the shuttle bus suddenly overtook her vehicle and swerved into her lane without warning, forcing her to brake and swerve left to avoid a collision.

Ms. Panomporn, 31, an English teacher and owner of the dashcam footage, recounted that she was driving from Asia Road onto a parallel street heading to school when she encountered the incident near the PTT station in Baan Koh. A shuttle bus initially ahead of her suddenly accelerated, overtook other vehicles, and cut sharply into her lane, squeezing close to her car. She was forced to steer left to avoid impact, nearly driving off the road shoulder, and honked her horn in alarm.

Ms. Panomporn stated that the incident reflects reckless driving that disregards the safety of other road users, including passengers aboard the shuttle bus. She attempted to call the phone number on the back of the bus to lodge a complaint but received no answer, prompting her to publish the dashcam video. She has called on the company to investigate the facts and discipline its drivers to ensure they comply with traffic laws and prioritize the safety of all road users, as everyone has families waiting at home and no one deserves to suffer an accident due to another person's negligence.

Thailand Cuts Residential Power Rates, Separates Street Lighting Costs

Energy Minister Eknath Phromphanthu announced that the National Energy Policy Committee has approved separating public electricity costs such as street lighting from charges to ordinary consumers and setting them at a new dedicated rate to reduce the electricity burden on the public. The committee also tasked the Energy Regulatory Commission with amending laws and regulations for the electricity development fund to collect revenues from new sources including data center users, direct power purchase agreement holders, savings from reduced renewable energy adders, and community solar projects.

"These funds will be used to reduce public electricity costs and continue lowering residential electricity burdens as part of a stable energy transition toward clean energy, restructuring toward fair competition and just pricing," the minister said. The committee also approved reducing residential electricity rates by implementing a progressive tariff for residential users, with the first 200 units reduced to 3 baht per unit, while units 201-400 and above 401 remain unchanged. By removing public electricity costs from residential bills, all consumption levels benefit from the restructuring.

The committee also expanded the definition of residential electricity users to include rental housing businesses such as rental homes, dormitories, and apartments, as well as homes without house registration currently required to use higher-rate temporary electricity. This helps ease the burden on renters, mostly students and workers. For data centers, the committee approved setting separate electricity rates reflecting true costs of power supply and network expansion investments including imported liquefied natural gas and infrastructure upgrades requiring special reliability, preventing these costs from burdening ordinary consumers.

On July 15, 2569, police from Sab Prab Station conducted a drug checkpoint inspection on a blue-and-white Bangkok-Chiang Mai intercity bus as part of Operation 90 Days, acting on a tip-off regarding suspected drug use and online gambling activity. When the bus arrived at the checkpoint, officers spotted a man showing clear signs of intoxication—dilated pupils, trembling hands, and slurred speech. A search of his person and luggage uncovered eight methamphetamine pills hidden alongside one electronic cigarette, leading to his detention.

The suspect, a 37-year-old from Chiang Mai, admitted the drugs were his. A urine test came back positive, confirmed by a medical examination at Sab Prab Hospital. He confessed to buying eleven methamphetamine pills for 500 baht in Chiang Mai on July 13, consuming three pills and carrying the remaining eight when he boarded the bus headed to Bangkok. Officers also discovered online gambling activity on his mobile phone.

The suspect was handed over to Sab Prab Station for prosecution on charges of illegal methamphetamine possession, consumption of a controlled substance, illegal online gambling, and violation of customs regulations.

Thai Pageant Queen Questions Removal Over Passport Mix-Up

Reigning Miss Supranational Thailand 2026 Kanyalak 'Aei' was stripped of her title over a passport mix-up during visa processing, but she claims the document was never lost—just held by the visa agency while she recovered from serious illne

Thai Pageant Queen Questions Removal Over Passport Mix-Up
21h ago Khaosod

A major pageant controversy has erupted after the Miss & Mister Supranational Thailand 2026 organization issued an order removing Kanyalak 'Aei' from her title as Miss Supranational Thailand 2026 and ending her role as Thailand's representative to Miss Supranational 2026 effective immediately, shocking pageant fans.

In response, Aei posted a detailed timeline explaining the circumstances. She clarified that the passport issue arose during visa processing: on June 26, 2569, she submitted a visa application following the pageant's procedure and handed her passport to a visa agency assigned by the organization. On June 30, visa officer A informed her in a LINE group that her visa was approved and introduced another officer B who would handle passport return and asked for a mailing address.

Aei explained she was busy with costume fittings and had no one home to receive documents, so she asked officer B to hold the passport until closer to her travel date. No further communication occurred about returning the document. Between July 2-8, Aei had scheduled pageant activities including a press conference, photo shoots, wardrobe fittings, and preparations.

On July 9, Aei became seriously ill with high fever and adverse medication reactions, requiring hospitalization. During travel preparations while in a confused state from illness and medication, she couldn't locate her passport and called officer A at 12:57 AM on July 11, worried about what to do if it was lost. Officer A immediately clarified that the passport remained with officer B and would be delivered that morning, noting he hadn't rushed delivery because he saw Aei was hospitalized.

Aei received her passport on July 11 at 11:33 AM and rescheduled her departure to July 12 in coordination with the pageant. She emphasized her passport was never lost but remained with the visa agency throughout, and the confusion arose only during her illness and medication-induced disorientation. She questioned the pageant organization's actions and apologized if she had made any genuine mistakes.

The body of Ms. Yadakarn, nicknamed Nong Oom and aged 32, who died in a beer hall fire in Ladprao on the night of July 12, was brought to Wat Mai Thai Charoen in Hu Thamnop subdistrict, Pak Chong district, Buriram on the morning of July 15 for a merit-making ceremony. The Poh Tek Tung Foundation coordinated the transport. An autopsy determined she died from oxygen deprivation due to smoke inhalation.

Her mother, Boonthong, 55, recalled that her daughter enjoyed helping others and had worked as a volunteer rescue worker in Kalasin and Khon Kaen provinces for many years. She had a 13-year-old son from a previous marriage whom her mother raised. The mother asked her daughter to stop volunteering work and instead seek employment to support the family. Her daughter then moved to Bangkok, where she worked and sent money home each month, calling regularly to check on her mother and brother. She had been preparing to return home soon for the rice-farming season as she did every year. The family was devastated upon learning the tragic news, particularly her son, who has now lost his mother.

The Poh Tek Tung Foundation, upon learning that Oom had previously served as a volunteer rescue worker, contacted the Suang Jaraniyat Rescue Unit in Buriram to provide 20,000 baht in financial assistance to the family.

Thailand's education ministry endorsed Kasetsart University's 20-year strategic plan aimed at adapting to digital transformation, climate change, and demographic shifts while strengthening graduates' competitiveness and innovation capacity.

Education Ministry Backs Kasetsart University's 20-Year Strategy
21h ago Khaosod

Thailand's Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation outlined the future of Thai higher education and backed Kasetsart University's strategic planning for sustainable development and global competitiveness. On July 15 at the Ashvinn Grand Convention Hotel in Bangkok, Dr. Phan Perm Sak Karunee chaired the opening ceremony of the "Kasetsart University 20-Year Foresight and Future Projection Study (2028-2047)" and delivered a keynote address on "Megatrends and the New Higher Education Landscape: Impacts on Kasetsart University." The event was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kongsak Thiangtharm, acting rector of Kasetsart University, along with over 50 executives and experts from higher education institutions, government agencies, and the private sector.

Dr. Phan Perm Sak Karunee said that higher education institutions worldwide are facing major transformations driven by digital technology advances, demographic shifts, and climate change impacts, all of which affect universities' roles and future direction. Development planning must therefore rely on systematic foresight coupled with readiness for uncertainty, enabling higher education institutions to adapt efficiently, produce quality graduates, create knowledge and innovation that address national development needs, and sustainably strengthen the country's competitive capacity.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary added that the ministry prioritizes strategic foresight processes to help institutions identify long-term opportunities and challenges, and design flexible strategies responsive to rapid change. Key mechanisms include clustering higher education institutions by expertise to eliminate redundancy, build specialized excellence, allocate resources efficiently, and align education management with future industry and labor market needs. Currently, over 111 institutions participate, divided into five main groups: Global and Frontier Research, Technology and Innovation, Area-based and Community Development, Human Resource Development, and Degree and Non-Degree Skill Development. The ministry also drives the Higher Education Sandbox curriculum initiative to remove curricular standard constraints, promote direct collaboration between institutions and employers, and create flexible, modern curricula producing skilled graduates matching national needs.

Dr. Phan Perm Sak Karunee further noted that the ministry established a "Higher Education Development Fund" as a key mechanism for reforming the system, supporting faculty development, curriculum advancement, and student competency development aligned with industry and national development goals. The fund also promotes research, innovation, and quality specialized workforce production to boost national competitiveness and guide Thailand toward high-income status, moving beyond the middle-income trap.
