Thailand's Nuclear Institute Marks 20 Years, Eyes Medical, Agriculture Advances
Thailand's Nuclear Technology Institute celebrated 20 years of advancing nuclear science with plans to expand applications in medicine, agriculture, and clean energy, positioning itself as a regional research hub.
Thailand's National Nuclear Technology Institute (INTI) celebrated its 20th anniversary and officially opened the 2026 International Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology (INST2026), themed "Nuclear Technology for the Sustainable Future." The institute aims to establish Thailand as a regional hub for nuclear science and technology collaboration, facilitating global knowledge and innovation exchange while strengthening research capacity among Thai scientists and personnel. INTI announced its commitment to developing nuclear technology infrastructure to improve living standards, enhance national competitiveness, and drive sustainable development.
Princess Sirindhorn's attendance as opening ceremony chair was a great honor for the institute and participants from Thailand and abroad, reflecting royal support for advancing the nation's science, technology, and innovation capabilities at international standards. Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thawachai Oun-jun noted that over 20 years, INTI has served as Thailand's primary nuclear science and technology organization, continuously developing critical infrastructure including research reactor operations, technology innovation, and radiation services for industry, medicine, and agriculture, with plans to expand regional service centers.
Moving forward, INTI will pursue three key strategies: advancing medical nuclear technology for an aging society, enhancing the value and standards of Thai agricultural and herbal products through radiation technology, and supporting clean energy development, particularly preparing nuclear technology infrastructure for rising energy demands from the digital economy and artificial intelligence. INTI emphasized that nuclear technology is not remote but a vital tool for improving quality of life, strengthening competitiveness, and fostering sustainable development, positioning itself as a knowledge center supporting research, innovation, and multi-sector collaboration to propel Thailand toward a science and technology-driven future.
