Thailand Q2 GDP Grows 1.9%, Trade Deficit Widens

Thailand's economy grew 1.9% in Q2 2025, slowing from the previous quarter, as energy prices and weak tourism offset gains from AI-related exports and government stimulus programs. The country posted its widest trade deficit since 1992 as c

Thailand Q2 GDP Grows 1.9%, Trade Deficit Widens
18h ago Khaosod

HSBC estimates Thai economy expanded 1.9% in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, a slowdown from the first quarter's 2.8% growth but slightly better than market forecasts. HSBC had predicted 2.1% growth while Bloomberg forecast 1.8%. When adjusted for seasonal factors, the economy contracted 0.2% quarter-on-quarter after a 0.6% expansion in the first quarter, reflecting mid-year economic slowdown. However, data centre investments, government stimulus, and inventory accumulation remained key growth drivers.

Senior economist Aris Dacanay of HSBC's ASEAN region noted the slowdown was driven by energy price pressures and tourism sector weakness. Rising fuel prices reduced household purchasing power, while foreign tourist arrivals declined partly due to high airfares. These headwinds were partially offset by government stimulus programmes, particularly the Thailand Helps Thailand Plus scheme, which subsidises 60% of purchases at participating retailers with a combined budget of 175 billion baht through September 2025.

Strong global demand for artificial intelligence technology boosted Thai exports in double-digit growth, as Thailand serves as a manufacturing hub for AI-related hardware including cooling systems, printed circuit boards, and hard disc drives. Despite export benefits from AI demand, capital imports jumped 27.5% year-on-year as Thailand accelerated imports of capital goods and advanced technology to support data centre construction and expansion.

The trade balance swung into deficit of approximately 509 billion baht, the widest deficit since 1992, the first year of available records. While some stems from rising oil import costs, HSBC believes the trade shift reflects structural changes as Thailand invests heavily to boost digital processing capacity and support the digital economy.

For full-year 2025, HSBC forecasts Thai GDP growth of 2.2%, supported by fiscal measures and strong exports, with potential acceleration in the second half. Inventory accumulation contributed 7.2 percentage points to GDP growth.

DHL Express, the global leader in international express shipping, has announced a new direct flight route between Shanghai and Bangkok to boost cargo capacity on trade routes between China and the rapidly growing Indochinese region. The new route covers Shanghai–Bangkok–Bahrain–Brussels–Shanghai and will strengthen connections between manufacturing hubs, raw material suppliers, and consumer markets across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

The service will operate with DHL's Boeing 767 cargo aircraft, which can carry a maximum payload of 50 tons, reflecting the company's commitment to expanding network capacity and infrastructure to support high-growth markets. The move also demonstrates DHL Express's responsiveness to evolving trade patterns and its ability to adapt quickly to changing business conditions.

Bangkok serves as a critical gateway to the Indochinese region, while Bahrain and Brussels are DHL Express's major transport hubs. The Shanghai-Bangkok route enables DHL Express to efficiently collect and manage shipments from China and Southeast Asia before connecting them to destinations across Europe and the Middle East.

Paricha Pramukhgul, Managing Director of DHL Express Thailand and Indochinese Region Head, said: "As Southeast Asia becomes a global trade and manufacturing center, we see clear industry trends of businesses relocating manufacturing bases to Thailand and the Indochinese region. Our top priority in supporting this growth is ensuring businesses can rapidly access raw materials, components, and finished goods while operating efficiently. This direct Shanghai-Bangkok flight will strengthen cross-border supply chain infrastructure in the region, providing speed and reliability for confident business expansion and bringing Thai-made products to global markets."

Kieran O'Neill, General Manager of the Bangkok Hub, stated: "Introducing the Boeing 767 cargo aircraft with a maximum payload of 50 tons to our facility significantly enhances our ability to collect, sort, and route cargo between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Our infrastructure is fully prepared to handle increased cargo volumes, reinforcing Bangkok Hub's role as the region's trade engine and enabling Thai and Indochinese businesses to achieve faster and more precise shipping times for competitive advantage in global markets."

The service launches as manufacturers and traders in markets such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos increasingly source raw materials from China as part of multi-country production chains. With trade between China and Southeast Asia intensifying, DHL Express is committed to developing faster, more flexible and resilient shipping networks.

The project will add 19 million cubic meters of water storage capacity, benefiting approximately 10,000 rai during the rainy season and 3,000 rai during the dry season, ensuring farmers have adequate water for cultivation and can plan production according to seasonal availability.

The reservoir will also supply approximately 5 million cubic meters annually for consumption in the EEC area of Chachoengsao, while supporting fisheries and aquaculture and helping maintain ecological balance in the Bang Pakong River estuary. Over the project's 50-year lifespan, total benefits are estimated at 6.082 billion baht, comprising 4.048 billion baht from agriculture, 1.892 billion baht from consumption, and 141.5 million baht from fisheries.

The Ministry of Agriculture will closely monitor the project to ensure it meets timelines and achieves its goals of securing water supplies for agriculture, consumption, and economic activities in the EEC while protecting the environment and supporting affected communities.

Shooting Range Closed After Man's Death
18h ago Khaosod

A 36-year-old man suffering from depression used a rented firearm to cause a tragic incident at the Bang Bua Thong shooting range on Kanchanaphisek Road in Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province, at 11:30 a.m. on August 18, 2026. At 1:30 p.m. the same day, Deputy Interior Minister Jedsetsart Thaisetsart and Abhichai Arkamsr, vice governor of Nonthaburi, visited the facility to inspect safety procedures and investigate the incident. Jedsetsart revealed that upon inspection, the range's permits and firearms were found to be in full compliance with regulations. However, he announced that a temporary 30-day closure has been ordered, after which stricter inspections will follow.

The deputy minister noted that currently no law exists to screen individuals entering the facility—the man simply presented an ID, filled out a form, paid a fee, and was allowed to use the range. He had rented ammunition in one box and spent considerable time at the facility. When attempting to remove the firearm, he fired at a range officer, who was forced to flee. The suspect then took the weapon outside and shot himself fatally.

While initial reports indicated the man suffered from depression and heard voices in his head, police found no medical records of treatment, though relatives confirmed he had psychiatric issues. The victim's family expressed dissatisfaction with the circumstances, pointing out that without entry screening regulations, people with serious mental health conditions cannot be prevented from using the facility. The interior ministry plans to issue a royal decree within 60 days establishing regulations for both state and private shooting ranges, including screening procedures, operational rules, and supervision protocols. The measure aims to ensure public safety from firearms and address illegal weapons trafficking.

Opposition Leader Says Evidence Ready for Senate Fraud Case

Opposition leader Nattapong Rueangpanya says the opposition has evidence implicating Bhumjaithai politicians in the Senate fraud case and will present it during parliamentary interrogation, accusing PM Anutin of deflecting accountability.

Opposition Leader Says Evidence Ready for Senate Fraud Case
18h ago Khaosod

Opposition leader Nattapong Rueangpanya has criticized Prime Minister Anutin for deflecting scrutiny of the Senate fraud investigation, stating the opposition holds clear evidence potentially implicating Bhumjaithai politicians. Speaking on August 18 at a Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial administration meeting, Nattapong said the opposition will bring evidence forward during parliamentary interrogation. He characterized government statements dismissing the fraud as politically unrelated as an attempt to block opposition oversight and a lack of political courage. Regarding the PM's accusation that the opposition is leveraging the Senate quota issue to gain power, Nattapong countered that all parties contesting elections naturally seek to govern, adding the opposition does not deny its goal to become government and reform Thai politics, but the PM should not use rhetoric to evade parliamentary accountability. When asked if the case failing to proceed against all 229 implicated individuals would amount to whitewashing, Nattapong said the Election Commission must refer all evidence to the Supreme Court, noting that legal standards require only reasonable belief to warrant prosecution. He warned the opposition is prepared to challenge any improper action by the Election Commission through multiple legal mechanisms. Regarding political pressure for PM Anutin to resign or dissolve parliament, Nattapong stated the PM has options at any time, but leaders must be ready for scrutiny and public accountability, leaving such decisions to the PM himself. When asked whether this represents internal conflict within the same political faction, Nattapong argued the blue-system coalition appears strong externally but lacks genuine political will because it is bound by mutual interests rather than shared policy objectives. He suggested this interest-based coalition structure contains inherent fragility, evidenced by current rifts and the emergence of the very evidence now public, which could only originate from those who participated in the original process and lost benefits from it.
