Japanese Father Sternly Warned After Abandoning 7-Year-Old on Mount Fuji

A 48-year-old Japanese father has been severely cautioned by police after abandoning his 7-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji for several hours in fog and rain, according to BBC reporting on 23 August. The boy complained of tiredness, so the father left him with only drinks and snacks before continuing up the mountain with his other son.

The child waited alone for 8 hours before officials found him. The boy was discovered at approximately 07:30 local time near Station 6 of the Fuji-Subashiri Trail, which stands at 2,000 metres above sea level. Mountain staff found the child sitting alone on a bench and alerted police.

Police tracked down the father between stations 7 and 8, approximately three hours' walk away. The boy had waited alone for 8 hours and was exhausted and distressed when he saw his father again.

Police strongly criticised the father, stating that leaving a child alone was unacceptable. The father apologized and acknowledged it was a reckless decision.

The family had used the Fuji-Subashiri Trail, which begins at Station 5 and typically takes about 5 hours to reach the summit, with another 3 hours required for the descent.

Mount Fuji is located southwest of Tokyo and stands 3,776 metres high. It is an active volcano and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. It is considered one of Japan's three sacred mountains, alongside Mount Tate and Mount Haku. Around 200,000 climbers ascend the mountain each year, though some routes limit numbers to prevent overcrowding.

Miss Universe Organization Backs Fatima, Says Women Must Speak Up

Miss Universe Organization backs Miss Universe 2025 Fatima Alves after she spoke out against Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil, stating women must not stay silent to preserve opportunities or legal status.

Miss Universe Organization Backs Fatima, Says Women Must Speak Up
1h ago Khaosod

The Miss Universe Organization has issued a statement supporting Fatima Alves, emphasizing that women should not stay silent to preserve opportunities, positions, or dreams.

The statement follows Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil's social media post indicating he is pursuing arrest warrants against Fatima Alves, Miss Universe 2025 from Mexico, on defamation and false statement charges.

The Miss Universe Organization released a statement backing Fatima and reaffirming its principles of dignity, safety, and women's rights. The organization stated that the Miss Universe platform has always been more than a pageant, crown, or competition. Its core mission is to serve as a global community of women from diverse countries, cultures, and eras who have found opportunities to express themselves, be heard, and use their voices for meaningful causes.

The organization said it stands united against violence, threats, intimidation, devaluation, disrespect, and mistreatment of women in any form. No woman should feel obligated to remain silent to preserve opportunities, legal status, or dreams.

When Fatima Alves spoke out to defend her own dignity against treatment she received from Nawat Itsaragrisil, she reminded all women of a fundamental truth: respect is not something earned through silence—it is a right. When other women stood beside her, they reinforced another powerful reality: we must care for one another.

Across all eras and continents, titleholders, national pageant directors, former Miss Universe winners, contestants, and women who have been part of this organization have united their voices to show solidarity with Fatima and oppose any behavior designed to diminish women's dignity, intimidate, undermine, or silence them.

This is not about nationality, competition, position, or a crown—it is about human dignity. Women supporting women must not be merely eloquent words but a commitment to listen, protect, stand together, and speak out when silence allows harmful behavior to continue. We must build an organization where empowerment is not just something discussed on stage but practiced when it matters most—a place where every woman knows she can say "this is not right" without fear, and standing up for herself never means standing alone.

To Fatima: we see you, we hear your voice, and we stand with you. Today, we unite to speak against mistreatment, threats, and abuse of power, and to firmly protect the dignity, safety, and respect of all women.

Myanmar Military Airstrike Kills 14 at Buddhist Monastery

Myanmar military aircraft struck a monastery in Myaung Township, central Sagaing Region, on August 21, killing at least 14 people who had gathered for religious ceremonies during Buddhist Lent. According to Nway Oo Myaung, a pro-democracy opposition figure, the attack occurred around 9 a.m. local time and killed 11 men and 3 women, mostly elderly practitioners aged 50–70 who were observing a three-month meditation retreat. Nway Oo stated the strike was deliberate, not accidental. Analysts note that Myanmar's military relies on fighter jets supplied by China and Russia to counter rebel groups. Last week, the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), established by the UN Human Rights Council, released a report accusing the military of indiscriminate airstrikes against civilians, which the Myanmar government dismissed as one-sided allegations based on unverifiable information. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), which maps political violence and armed conflict worldwide, reported in July that the military's sustained terror strategy includes deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and social gatherings such as weddings and religious festivals to maximize psychological impact. Myanmar has been engulfed in civil war since the military coup in 2021 that ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Over the past five years, more than 100,000 people from all sides have died amid ongoing fighting between the military and pro-democracy groups and various armed ethnic forces.

Thailand Orders Forest Reform in Nan Highlands After Erosion Risks Found

Thailand's environment minister ordered forest reform in Nan's highlands after surveys found steep agricultural plots risking severe erosion and landslides during heavy rains. Authorities will require farming communities to adopt watershed

Thailand Orders Forest Reform in Nan Highlands After Erosion Risks Found
2h ago Khaosod

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin revealed on August 23 that he received a report from Arttapon Charoenchanasa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, following a helicopter survey of the upstream area in Pua District, Nan Province, which was hit by heavy rain, landslides, and road closures. Multiple villages required emergency supply drops by helicopter. The survey found agricultural plots on steep, high-elevation terrain within the national forest reserve where corn was planted nearly to the hilltops. These steep upstream areas face severe risk of soil erosion and water runoff during heavy rainfall. Suchat ordered the Department of Forestry to urgently meet with communities and reinforce that agricultural permits come with strict conditions and rules. He stressed that permission to live and farm does not mean unlimited land use, especially in upstream and steep zones requiring soil and water conservation measures. Suchat stated: "I have instructed the Department of Forestry to quickly engage with the people and make clear that areas the state permits for farming have conditions and rules that must be followed—particularly planting native forest species, maintaining soil, and shifting from single-crop highland agriculture to agroforestry that preserves watershed systems." According to local data, Ban Khun Goon is a traditional community where people have long lived and farmed. Some now operate under state land allocation programs across three sub-watersheds with 11 communities covering at least 4,000 rai, mostly growing corn. A few areas, such as Moo 2 in Phu Kha Subdistrict with 37 households, have begun transitioning to coffee and higher-value crops. Suchat clarified: "We do not view all indigenous residents as encroachers, but once the state designates farming areas, they must follow the conditions and rules—particularly watershed management through tree planting, terracing, reduced pesticide use, and soil and water conservation. These are responsibilities everyone must share." He stated that the recent flash floods and landslides in Nan must serve as a critical lesson for managing highland areas, requiring careful assessment of which zones should be farmed, which restored to forest, and which suited to appropriate agriculture. The minister ordered the Department of Forestry to systematically survey and map highland areas while building public understanding of the importance of perennial trees, reduced monoculture, and cash crops compatible with forest species—such as coffee, cocoa, avocado, and fruit trees—to generate income alongside conservation.

The cycling competition at the Asian Para Games features 34 gold medals total, with Thailand sending nine athletes across 17 events between October 18–24. Meanwhile, General Withaya Kanthaubul, deputy chairman of the Thailand Association for the Blind, visited the team to encourage blind cyclists before the opening of the Thailand Blind Judo Championship at the National Sports University's Chiang Mai campus, serving as an important warm-up venue for athletes ahead of international competition.
