Nine Provinces Face Landslide, Flashflood Risk From Heavy Rain
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, the Department of Mineral Resources' Geohazard Operations Center warned residents to be vigilant against landslides and flash floods as heavy rain continues to fall in vulnerable areas. Nine provinces have been identified as at particular risk: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Tak, Nakhon Nayok, Trat, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Phang Nga. The Meteorological Department forecasts that northern Thailand and the west coast of the southern region will experience heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours due to a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam combined with a moderate southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. The public is urged to be cautious of heavy to very heavy rainfall and accumulated water, which may cause flash floods and flash floods, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and low-lying zones. Volunteer networks in at-risk areas are asked to closely monitor the situation and prepare for potential geohazard disasters. If a geohazard occurs, officials must inspect the affected area immediately to reassure the public and provide initial guidance.

Fed's Balance Sheet Shift Could Boost Gold Toward $4,200

Fed policy shifts toward balance sheet reduction could weaken the dollar and push gold prices toward $4,200 per ounce, though Treasury yields remain a critical wildcard in determining the metal's direction.

Fed's Balance Sheet Shift Could Boost Gold Toward $4,200
24 Jul Khaosod

GCAP Gold's chief analyst Areerut Murachy says global markets are tracking the Federal Reserve's changing policy direction under Kevin Warsh, who has begun signaling emphasis on balance sheet reduction rather than rate increases. If implemented, this approach could pressure the U.S. dollar and support gold price recovery; however, market direction still depends on U.S. Treasury yields, which could also suppress gold if they rise.

Warsh told Congress that the Fed's $6.8 trillion balance sheet review will address appropriate reserve levels for the financial system, requiring the Fed to maintain government bonds at certain levels—consistent with his longstanding opposition to quantitative easing. While the Fed may not return to pre-2009 balance sheet levels, it can restructure toward more sustainable levels.

Deutsche Bank analysts caution that the Fed's "reduce balance sheet but not raise rates" approach may not significantly weaken the dollar unless short-term Treasury yields rise, citing Japan's experience where yen remained weak despite gradual balance sheet cuts. The policy could pressure the U.S. government to keep long-term borrowing costs down, requiring close monitoring of market reaction.

GCAP GOLD analysts see increasingly positive signals in gold as selling momentum slows, though an uptrend hasn't been confirmed. If gold holds above $4,100/oz firmly, it could rally to test $4,200 resistance (approximately 66,700 baht). Failure to break above would bring selling pressure toward support at $4,065–$4,000/oz (65,200–64,500 baht), viewed as an accumulation zone.

Police Bust Fake Fatherhood Scheme Affecting Nearly 1,500 Foreign Children
24 Jul Khaosod

Police announced on July 24 at Huai Kwang Station that they had dismantled a "fake Thai father" scheme in which foreign children were fraudulently granted Thai citizenship through false paternity claims. The operation resulted in the arrest of four suspects: two Chinese parents and two Thai men acting as nominal fathers. National Administrative Development Commission Secretary-General Narucha Kosaksivaliset, Deputy National Police Commander Pol. Gen. Samran Nualma, and Deputy Director of Health Support Services Akom Praditsuwan led the press briefing following the raids, which included a private hospital.

Narucha revealed that the investigation began after discovering irregularities in civil registration databases, particularly cases where children born to Chinese mothers were registered with Thai fathers. Deeper investigation confirmed that men were using false identities to provide paternity affidavits for children whose biological fathers were foreign nationals. Evidence was gathered, an investigation was conducted, and operations expanded, ultimately leading to today's raids and arrests.

The administration commander stated that the "fake father" problem has been a persistent social issue. He instructed all relevant agencies—government bodies, civil registration offices, and hospital personnel—to strictly follow proper procedures and the law, and to refuse assistance to any illegal activities. Officials involved in such schemes would face disciplinary action up to dismissal and criminal prosecution under statutes carrying harsher penalties for public servants. Officials also pledged to coordinate with the Ministry of Public Health regarding private hospital staff implicated in the scheme.

Deputy National Police Commander Samran reported that suppression of the scheme has been ongoing. In a previous operation on July 9, authorities executed 35 arrest warrants. Today's operation, which expanded from leads and public tips, has identified 1,483 children with suspicious records in Bangkok. Of these, two children's cases have been processed, leading to today's four arrests. Authorities plan to verify all suspicious cases and revoke Thai nationality for any children unlawfully granted citizenship.

China's Defense Minister Addresses Cambodia Arms Supply Controversy
24 Jul Khaosod

Thai Defense Minister General Anutin Charnvirakul said on July 24, 2025, that his meeting with China's Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun was a formal state visit following discussions with President Xi Jinping. He highlighted that the Chinese minister stressed the importance of informal dialogue and emphasized that China must remain neutral because both Thailand and Cambodia are valued friends. The Chinese minister described the comprehensive strategic partnership as having both public and private dimensions.

General Anutin noted that China had previously wanted to visit Thailand but faced urgent commitments. He stated that China possesses advanced military equipment comparable to any nation and can provide various forms of assistance. However, according to the 2016 treaty and agreements, China delays delivery and does not supply weapons during armed conflict—a demonstration of strategic partnership and respect for Thailand.

The minister said China has proposed cooperation beyond military equipment, including education, technology, and artificial intelligence initiatives. When asked whether China would mediate between Thailand and Cambodia, General Anutin clarified that the Chinese minister did not offer mediation but rather emphasized that both countries are China's friends and that China provides equipment according to existing treaties until the Thai-Cambodian border situation improves.

China seeks to elevate military relations with Thailand and has invited the Thai defense minister to forums and an official visit to China, both of which he has accepted. Regarding weapons including corvette ships, General Anutin confirmed that China provides both, noting that as a superpower, China can supply anything but chooses not to, or delays delivery. He suggested the public compare Chinese equipment provided to Cambodia with Thailand's own capabilities, while remaining uncertain about ammunition supplies.

Defense Minister Clarifies Killing of Five Rangers in Narathiwat
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2569, at the Ministry of Defense, Defense Minister General Adul Bunyatharnchaij held a press conference to clarify controversy surrounding his earlier interview, in which he avoided using the word "hunt" regarding the gunman who killed five rangers in Narathiwat province. He expressed genuine sorrow over the incident, stating that nothing pains a soldier, officer, and commander more than losing subordinates in combat. "My green heart has remained unchanged throughout my life," he said. "Even though my role is now Defense Minister, I affirm that my subordinates must not die in vain. I have instructed the Fourth Army Region commander to apprehend the perpetrator. I have done this throughout my life—subordinates do not die without consequence. However, my position and role require that if I speak more forcefully, it escalates the situation and adds fuel to the fire. But when it is necessary to express what is in my heart, I must speak. Nothing hurts more than being accused of not caring for my subordinates, and I regret that my words were not fully understood." He denied being angry and said there is no conflict with the Army Commander, with whom he coordinated before the commander visited the area. He apologized for the communication gap. "I do not have a polished rhetoric. When media asks me, I answer without considering the impact would be this severe. It pains me when people say that as a soldier I was one way, but changed when I entered politics. I am not deluded or proud. I am not attached to anything. If you go to the Northeast, you can ask people there—this is the kind of person I am," Adul said. During this interview, the Defense Minister displayed a tense demeanor and tears welled up in his eyes.

Thailand Faces 12.5% U.S. Tariff on Food, Autos, Textiles

Thailand faces a 12.5% U.S. tariff on exports including food, autos, and textiles starting July 2025, affecting a top market that receives nearly a quarter of Thai exports.

Thailand Faces 12.5% U.S. Tariff on Food, Autos, Textiles
24 Jul Khaosod

The Federation of Thai Industries is closely monitoring the U.S. tariff measures following the American government's invocation of Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act to impose additional import duties on 60 economies over ineffective enforcement of forced labor bans. Thailand will face a 12.5% tariff increase on most exported goods starting July 24, 2025, replacing the temporary 10% rate under Section 122. This change is critical for Thai industries since the United States is the country's top export market; during January to May 2025, Thai exports to the U.S. reached approximately $38 billion, up 40.31% year-on-year and representing 23.5% of total Thai exports. Vulnerable sectors include food and food products, auto parts, gems and jewelry, furniture, textiles, and apparel.

FTI President Pimjai Leeissaranukul stated that the Federation will urgently consult with the Ministry of Commerce, industrial groups, and relevant agencies to assess affected product categories, tariff burden costs, order trends, and supply chain impacts. Thai industries have consistently adhered to international labor and standards requirements, particularly export sectors subject to continuous partner audits. Thailand should leverage this strength by upgrading traceability systems and supply chain transparency to build confidence in bilateral trade negotiations.

Long-term strategy should not focus solely on Section 301 but establish comprehensive trade policy through four key measures: market diversification to reduce over-reliance on any single market; enhanced compliance with international standards in labor, human rights, environment, and product origin; increased product value and innovation to maintain competitiveness despite higher tariff costs; and supply chain restructuring to enable greater traceability. The FTI expressed confidence that ongoing reciprocal trade agreement negotiations (ART) led by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Sopa Sutheermpun, along with coordinated government efforts, will achieve balanced and fair outcomes benefiting both nations. The Federation remains committed to working with all relevant agencies to preserve Thai product competitiveness and sustain business confidence.
