Shooting Range Closed After Man's Death
A 36-year-old man with depression fatally shot himself after firing at a range officer at a Nonthaburi shooting range on August 18, prompting authorities to close the facility for 30 days and announce plans for mental health screening regul
A 36-year-old man suffering from depression used a rented firearm to cause a tragic incident at the Bang Bua Thong shooting range on Kanchanaphisek Road in Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province, at 11:30 a.m. on August 18, 2026. At 1:30 p.m. the same day, Deputy Interior Minister Jedsetsart Thaisetsart and Abhichai Arkamsr, vice governor of Nonthaburi, visited the facility to inspect safety procedures and investigate the incident. Jedsetsart revealed that upon inspection, the range's permits and firearms were found to be in full compliance with regulations. However, he announced that a temporary 30-day closure has been ordered, after which stricter inspections will follow.
The deputy minister noted that currently no law exists to screen individuals entering the facility—the man simply presented an ID, filled out a form, paid a fee, and was allowed to use the range. He had rented ammunition in one box and spent considerable time at the facility. When attempting to remove the firearm, he fired at a range officer, who was forced to flee. The suspect then took the weapon outside and shot himself fatally.
While initial reports indicated the man suffered from depression and heard voices in his head, police found no medical records of treatment, though relatives confirmed he had psychiatric issues. The victim's family expressed dissatisfaction with the circumstances, pointing out that without entry screening regulations, people with serious mental health conditions cannot be prevented from using the facility. The interior ministry plans to issue a royal decree within 60 days establishing regulations for both state and private shooting ranges, including screening procedures, operational rules, and supervision protocols. The measure aims to ensure public safety from firearms and address illegal weapons trafficking.
