Thailand's 13 registered GI-protected mango varieties from nine provinces generated more than 1.066 billion baht in market value during 2024, according to Aramon Saiputthawitthum, director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property. The Commerce Ministry is actively promoting Thai GI mangoes as high-value agricultural products by strengthening quality control systems and expanding market opportunities. The geographic indication mechanism helps differentiate products, builds consumer confidence, and creates stable income for local farmers and entrepreneurs.
The 13 Thai GI mango varieties span regions including northern Nam Dok Mai Phichit, central varieties from Chachoengsao and other provinces, northeastern Nam Dok Mai Khon Kaen and Nam Dok Mai Chaiyaphum, eastern Sarakaew mangoes, and southern Baeo Songkhla mangoes. Three additional mango varieties are pending GI registration, reflecting growing farmer and community interest in the system. Each GI mango possesses distinctive characteristics shaped by local geography, climate, and traditional farming knowledge, resulting in unique flavor, quality, and production standards that appeal to premium domestic and international markets.
The top five GI mangoes by market value in 2024 were Nam Dok Mai Phichit (767.18 million baht), Nam Dok Mai Sarakaew (171.15 million baht), Nam Dok Mai Ban Lorn Chaiyaphum (33.31 million baht), Khayatuk Paed Rio (10.44 million baht), and Nam Dok Mai Bangkla Chachoengsao (over 7.2 million baht). The GI system encourages farmer cooperation, standardized production processes, and quality management, fostering long-term local economic strength.
