The match took place on September 20 at Toyota Stadium in Japan as part of Group A. Thailand's first match had been a narrow 3-2 win over Kyrgyzstan, while Hong Kong lost to Japan in their opener. A victory in this match would mathematically guarantee Thailand a quarterfinal spot.
Hong Kong struck first when a Thai defensive error in the 14th minute allowed Ou Chun Ming to put them ahead 1-0. Thailand quickly responded, with Thanakrit Chotimuangpak equalizing in the 39th minute to make it 1-1. In the second half, Paripraw Wongsa gave Thailand a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute.
That was far from the end of the scoring. An own goal by Sang Yi Hang extended Thailand's advantage to 3-1. After Hong Kong pressed forward, Thailand found space on the counterattack. In the 76th minute, Jauhanafia Mama broke through to make it 4-1, and Worawut Noisri sealed the rout with a goal in the 84th minute for a final score of 5-1. With the comprehensive victory, Thailand has mathematically secured a quarterfinal berth and will face Japan in their final group match on September 23.
