Thailand Urged to Prepare for Indonesia's Strict Halal Rules

Thailand's exporters have less than a year to obtain halal certification for food and beverage products destined for Indonesia, where new regulations take effect October 2026 and will affect $1.42 billion in annual Thai agricultural exports

Thailand Urged to Prepare for Indonesia's Strict Halal Rules
27 Jul Khaosod

The Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) under the Commerce Ministry is urging Thai businesses to accelerate their readiness as Indonesia upgrades its halal certification measures, requiring all food and beverage products to obtain halal certification before sale, effective October 17, 2026. On July 27, 2026, Nanthapong Jiralessapong, TPSO director, revealed that Indonesia is elevating and expanding its halal requirements under the Halal Product Assurance Law (Law No. 33/2014) and the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) guidelines, following a two-year grace period.

Once fully implemented, all food and beverage products sold in Indonesia must carry halal certification. Thailand exported $9.34 billion worth of goods to Indonesia in 2025, with agricultural and food products alone accounting for $1.42 billion, making halal-affected categories including sugar, cassava products, fresh and frozen fruits, pet food, rice, wheat products, ready-to-eat meals, and beverages critical to Thai export strategy.

Under the new regulations, Indonesia has clearly classified products requiring halal certification and those exempt (Positive List), with particular focus on primary agricultural goods, seafood, and processed foods—all major Thai export categories. Processed products with multiple ingredients or additives must obtain halal certification from Indonesia or BPJPH-recognized foreign certifiers before import. Certain exempted agricultural products must be naturally halal, free of additives or contaminants in processing, with documentary proof of transparent production and supply chains free of Islamic-prohibited substances.

Indonesia classifies processed seafood with added flavoring, sauces, spices, or oils, as well as dried fruits with additives or coatings, as requiring formal halal certification and cannot claim Positive List exemptions. Examples include frozen fruit with added ingredients, dried longan, and fresh fruit coated with wax or beeswax for preservation, all of which are now considered processed and requiring certification. Genetically modified organism (GMO) products also require halal certification. Beyond product standards, Indonesia is developing comprehensive "halal logistics" measures covering transportation and distribution processes.

UNESCO Heritage Site Took Five Governments, Minister Urges Maturity

UNESCO Heritage Site Took Five Governments, Minister Urges Maturity
27 Jul Khaosod

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin on July 27 announced that UNESCO's World Heritage Committee unanimously approved the registration of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahaviharn in Nakhon Si Thammarat as a new cultural world heritage site. He emphasized this represents a major cultural achievement for Thailand, achieved after deliberation by a global committee of representatives.

Chomklin attended the meeting in Busan, South Korea, where he represented Thailand alongside Culture Minister Sabida Thaiset and related agencies. He noted the application process spanned five governments starting in 2019 under General Prayut Chan-o-cha, then Srettha Thavisin, Yingluck Shinawatra, and finally Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's administrations.

The minister stressed that the success reflects 1,500 years of cultural heritage and 32,000 ancient artifacts that required UNESCO documentation. He urged critics to approach the achievement with maturity rather than politicizing Thailand's cultural pride, noting the approval required community and local leader cooperation. Chomklin added that Thailand plans to propose seven temples around Chiang Mai's ancient walls as a heritage site next, similar to Luang Prabang in Laos. He appealed to media to highlight this positive news, pointing out that UNESCO recognition has boosted visitor numbers from 30,000 to 200,000 during major festivals.

Police arrested a top-ranked gunman in a sugarcane field in Kanchanaburi on July 27 in connection with a shooting that erupted outside an entertainment venue after a long-standing feud. Nakarin, 34, was accused of attempted murder, illegal weapons possession, and firing a gun in a populated area. He was the 143rd most-wanted fugitive on the national police wanted list.

The incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two groups. On the night of December 27, 2568, both sides, each with about six members, ended up at the same entertainment venue on Saengchuto Road in Muang Kanchanaburi and sat near each other. Tensions ran high as members stared at each other, but no violence occurred inside.

When the venue closed, both groups left separately. As they reached a hotel parking area, Nakarin's group leader approached Chalathit's group and fired first, claiming the rival group had drawn weapons. An intense gun battle ensued between the two groups. Phuwadet, the victim, was shot and injured while Chalathit's group fled. After gathering evidence and obtaining arrest warrants, police tracked down and arrested Nakarin at a sugarcane field. During interrogation, he confessed to the charges before being transferred to Muang Kanchanaburi police station for further legal proceedings.

Single Mother Loses Poor Card After Medical Debt for Disabled Son

A 64-year-old single mother in Buriram lost her welfare card after the system flagged medical debt incurred treating her disabled son's illness, leaving her struggling to afford rice and basics on day-labor wages.

Single Mother Loses Poor Card After Medical Debt for Disabled Son
27 Jul Khaosod

In Buriram province, a 64-year-old single mother named Paveenrisaa Sunanthochai has come forward seeking help after losing her welfare card benefits in a new round of screening. The system flagged her as having debt exceeding program limits, though her debt stems entirely from borrowing to treat her disabled son's medical condition. Since grade 5, her son suffered from an enlarged spleen requiring surgery, which eventually left him partially paralyzed despite treatment attempts beginning years ago.

Every day, the mother leaves her disabled son at home and works day-labor jobs to earn money for rice and basic food for both of them. Though she volunteers as a village health worker earning 2,000 baht monthly and receives 600 baht in disability benefits, her son's disability allowance is recent. The state welfare card, which provided 300 baht per month, was her lifeline in lean months, allowing her to buy essentials like rice, eggs, and canned fish.

The loss of that benefit has devastated her already precarious finances. Monthly expenses for utilities, food, rice, and supplies for her son's care already strain her meager income. She has filed an appeal but is uncertain of the outcome. She is calling on the government to reconsider the program's debt threshold and examine the genuine hardship of her circumstances and the medical origins of her obligations.

Anyone wishing to donate rice, dry food, or diapers for disabled persons can contact 084-280-9378.

Thai Stock Market Faces Oil Price Surge, Inflation Concerns

Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers have pushed crude prices higher, triggering inflation concerns that could weigh on Thailand's stock market this week, though strong domestic investment fundamentals offer some support.

Thai Stock Market Faces Oil Price Surge, Inflation Concerns
27 Jul Khaosod

Globlek Securities (GBS) expects Thailand's stock market to decline this week following global trends, with main pressure coming from geopolitical tensions after Yemen-based Houthi groups backed by Iran attacked two Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Red Sea. The attacks have disrupted energy supply confidence, pushing crude oil prices higher and reviving market concerns about accelerating inflation, leading GBS to forecast the index trading range at 1,600-1,650 points this week. The broader market is supported by strong domestic economic fundamentals, with Thailand's Board of Investment reporting investment promotion applications in the first half of 2025 valued at over 1.47 trillion baht, up 37%, expected to create over 82,000 jobs and generate 1.2 trillion baht in annual export value. Investors should also monitor U.S. trade policy risks, including the Trump administration's tariffs on 60 countries at rates up to 12.5% against Thailand on forced labor allegations, uncertainty over USMCA renewal, rising global interest rates with the Fed expected to hike in September at 83% probability, and the elevated VIX Index at 18.70 reflecting fragile market sentiment. Domestically, watch for Commerce Ministry trade announcements, automotive production data, industrial production indices, Bank of Thailand economic reports on July 31, and the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on August 26; internationally, track the Federal Reserve meeting on July 28-29, U.S. economic data throughout the week, and China's industrial profit reports on July 27. GBS research director Watcharon Jongyariyong recommends investors focus on quality stocks with strong fundamentals while remaining cautious amid external headwinds.

MP Blasts Government Over Flawed Welfare Card Rollout

Pheu Thai MP Sirikanya Tansukul criticized the government's flawed welfare card rollout, calling for temporary benefit reinstatement while criteria are reviewed through September.

MP Blasts Government Over Flawed Welfare Card Rollout
27 Jul Khaosod

Sirikanya Tansukul, a list-based MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, criticized the government on July 27, 2569 for its careless approach to revising and expanding the state welfare card criteria, saying officials failed to consider the real hardships of ordinary citizens. Speaking at Parliament, she stated she expects temporary reinstatement of benefits over the next two months to address problems pending appeal, though she is uncertain whether other criteria will be reviewed, as the public has encountered rules that fail to reflect their genuine difficulties, including issues around debt and life insurance purchased by children for parents.

If further review is needed, the matter must go to the Public Welfare Committee, a process that could take considerable time. However, with the appeal deadline extended through the end of September, there may be enough opportunity to address current problems. When asked whether she saw the government's adjustments as easing social tension, Tansukul said the repeated cycle of reversals and rule changes with the welfare card stemmed from initial criteria that were poorly conceived and failed to prioritize public welfare. She concluded that the government's approach has been careless and error-prone, lacking thorough consideration and real concern for citizens' struggles.

Elderly Rider Vows Legal Action After MG Driver Punches Him
27 Jul Khaosod

A 70-year-old food delivery rider has vowed to take legal action against an MG sedan driver who punched him at a gas station in Minburi, Bangkok on July 26. The incident began when the rider parked his motorcycle in an empty EV charging spot while collecting a fried banana order. When he returned, an MG sedan owner was waiting to use the charging spot. The rider quickly took a photo and moved his bike, but the driver and his wife in the MG began honking and verbally abusing him, escalating to physical violence when the man got out and punched the rider in the face, causing a cut under his right eye that required six stitches.

The victim reported the incident to Minburi Police Station and received medical treatment. He stated he has been a delivery rider for 10 years and has never experienced such an attack. His left eye is now in significant pain, preventing him from eating or sleeping, and he has been forced to stop working. He disputes the driver's claim that he spat on them, pointing out he was wearing a face mask. The victim emphasized he is pursuing this case through the legal system to its conclusion, and urged people not to bring their home behavior into public society.

Thailand to Split Tourism and Sports Ministry by Early Next Year

Thailand will split its Tourism and Sports Ministry into two separate agencies by early 2025, with the new ministries to manage distinct budgets for sports and culture-tourism operations. The separation comes as the country seeks to boost t

Thailand to Split Tourism and Sports Ministry by Early Next Year
27 Jul Khaosod

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Panjareungvorkul announced on July 27 at Government House that the proposed separation of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will be submitted to parliament during the upcoming session. After cabinet approval, the plan will undergo three parliamentary readings before being sent to the Senate, with completion expected by the end of this year or early next year, in line with the Civil Service Commission's recommendations. The new ministries will be named the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with clearly allocated budgets for each department.

Regarding concerns about budget reductions, the minister clarified that the existing budgets for sports and tourism operations will remain separate and clearly defined across all departments. Surasak expressed enthusiasm about UNESCO's formal recognition of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahaviharn in Nakhon Si Thammarat as a World Heritage site, marking the first such monument in southern Thailand. This designation presents an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of Nakhon Si Thammarat among international tourists, as most foreign visitors currently concentrate on Phuket, Koh Samui, Surat Thani, Krabi, and Hat Yai in Songkhla.

The ministry is prepared to launch additional promotional campaigns and coordinate with international travel agencies to attract more foreign visitors to Nakhon Si Thammarat and surrounding areas. When asked about other sites under consideration for World Heritage status, the minister mentioned that the Culture Ministry is actively working on Thai traditional costume recognition, though other site nominations remain less developed. Thai costume registration with UNESCO is expected to advance further and is anticipated to be another source of national pride.
