World No. 2 badminton player Kulwutthichanon Vittitshan is fully committed to reaching the podium in men's singles at the 20th Asian Games in Japan in mid-September, after finishing outside the round of 16 at the previous Games. He will first compete in the 2026 World Badminton Championships in New Delhi, India, from August 17-23, where a total of 19 Thai athletes will participate. Kulwutthichanon has reached two World Championship finals (2023 and 2025) and won the title once in 2023. He will face world No. 91 Viren Nettasinghe of Sri Lanka in his opening match.

After the World Championships, Kulwutthichanon will represent Thailand at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, running September 19-October 4, 2025, with badminton competition scheduled for September 20-29. Seven gold medals will be awarded across five singles and doubles disciplines plus mixed doubles and team events. Thailand is sending 20 badminton athletes—10 men and 10 women.

Kulwutthichanon expressed his determination to finish in the top three, saying he wants to perform better than the previous Games where he was eliminated in the round of 16. He called for Thai fans to cheer for him and the entire national team across all sports.

Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, director of the Badminton Association of Thailand, acknowledged that competing at the Asian Games is nearly as competitive as the World Championships because most elite players are Asian. He expressed cautious optimism that Thailand can win one or two medals, with Kulwutthichanon in men's singles and Dechapol Puavaranukroh with Supissara Peupsaman in mixed doubles offering the best medal hopes. He noted that women's singles is particularly challenging due to strong competitors from South Korea, China, Japan, and Indonesia.

On August 8, 2026, Senator Phinyaphat Sansaneeya expressed deep condolences to families of victims, teachers, and students affected by the shooting at Tephisirin School in Nonthaburi, calling it a major loss for Thai society requiring urgent preventive measures. She expressed serious concern about the continued spread of distressing images and misinformation on social media, and called on the public and media to stop sharing photographs, video clips, graphic wound imagery, details about the perpetrator's methods, or personal information about the shooter—arguing that such content risks triggering copycat behavior among vulnerable youth and re-traumatizing survivors. The senator emphasized that sharing violent content not only harms people psychologically but may also inspire similar incidents, and urged society to maintain responsible communication standards to break the cycle of violence.

Sansaneeya stressed the need for all sectors to prioritize systematic mental health care for children, youth, teachers, and school personnel, noting that while health and social development ministries have deployed crisis teams, comprehensive screening should cover all affected groups. She called for schools nationwide to establish close monitoring systems for students showing signs of stress, accumulated pressure, or mental health concerns. The senator highlighted that modern youth problems extend beyond academic and external factors, emphasizing that mental health is crucial and cannot be overlooked. The Senate stands ready to coordinate with relevant agencies on mental health policy and school safety measures to prevent such tragic losses from occurring again in Thai society, with discussions expected when the Senate convenes.

A father brought his middle-school son to Thepsirin Nonthaburi School on August 8, 2025, to collect the boy's iPad and learning materials, which the student had not retrieved during the shooting incident that occurred the previous day. A teacher escorted the parent and student inside to gather the items, a process that took approximately 15 minutes before they left the campus. The father revealed that his son had informed his mother about the shooting as it happened, while he learned of the incident through news reports. The child remains traumatized by the event and cannot sleep alone in his room, preferring to stay with his mother. When retrieving his belongings from the school building today, the boy still showed visible signs of distress, requiring his father's support to walk inside to collect his things.

Meanwhile, Charin, 45, a local resident with two sons aged 6 and 9, visited the school to lay flowers in tribute to those affected by the shooting. He revealed that he lives in a nearby soi and passes the school entrance daily, feeling a strong connection to the place despite his sons not attending there. Every morning, he watches students walking to school and often stops his car to let them cross safely. He expressed shock and sadness that such an incident could occur in Thailand, describing it as a major loss that has deeply shaken the community. Although he was at work when the shooting happened, he later learned of the tragedy and feels devastated by what occurred.

Regarding school safety measures, Charin believes all schools should already have security protocols in place, but suggested it may be time to review and strengthen measures beyond weapon detection. He emphasized the importance of monitoring and assessing the mental health and psychological state of teachers, students, and all school staff. He noted that the root cause of violence may not lie solely in weapons but in behavioral issues, emotional distress, or accumulated stress. Early detection of behavioral changes and mental health concerns could help prevent incidents and reduce the likelihood of future violent events on school grounds.

Thai Court Dismisses NBTC Chair's Bid to Overturn Disqualification

Thailand's Central Administrative Court dismissed NBTC Chair Dr. Sorn Bunyaichaiprueksa's lawsuit challenging his disqualification, ruling he lacks legal standing until a formal royal decree removes him from office.

Thai Court Dismisses NBTC Chair's Bid to Overturn Disqualification
8 Aug Khaosod

The Central Administrative Court has refused to accept a lawsuit filed by Dr. Sorn Bunyaichaiprueksa, NBTC chairman, challenging a July 21, 2025 committee ruling that found him ineligible for the position due to prohibited characteristics. Dr. Sorn filed the case on August 3, seeking to have the committee's decision rescinded retroactively from the date of the ruling. The court rejected the case on the grounds that the plaintiff is not yet a suffering party, as no royal decree has been formally issued to remove him from office. Under the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Act, individuals approved by the Senate must provide evidence of ceasing their prior profession before the Prime Minister requests a royal appointment; the disqualification determination came after Dr. Sorn's appointment on April 13, 2022. The court ruled that removal from office following such a determination requires a separate royal decree under section 20 of the law, and until that formal step occurs, the plaintiff has no legal standing to sue. Consequently, the court dismissed the case without further consideration.

Classmates Reveal Shooter Sought Thai Teacher Over Grade

A student opened fire at a school building on August 8, 2026, searching for a Thai language teacher who had given him a failing grade despite his previous good academic standing.

Classmates Reveal Shooter Sought Thai Teacher Over Grade
8 Aug Khaosod

Classmates are gradually providing police with information about the young person who opened fire at a school building. On August 8, 2026, reporters learned that the perpetrator was searching for a Thai language teacher who was not in class that day. The teacher had reportedly given the shooter a grade of 0 in Thai, despite the student having previously maintained good overall academic standing.

Authorities have also learned that the perpetrator's grandmother was a former teacher and may have been upset about the grade situation. Investigators are examining whether the grade dispute and teacher conflict were factors in the attack.

After the initial incident at Building 5, the perpetrator ran to the fourth floor of Building 4 to search for the Thai language teacher. Upon not finding him, the perpetrator showed signs of distress and fired three shots into the air before the fatal event occurred.

At 11:26 a.m., a classmate came forward to provide additional details. When reporters asked about "Teacher A" (a pseudonym), whom the perpetrator had been seeking, the student confirmed the teacher is real and teaches Thai language. The student was uncertain whether the teacher had taught the previous day.

Another male student who was present at the scene later came forward to investigators, confirming that the perpetrator had indeed been searching for Teacher A, a Thai language instructor. This student stated that the perpetrator had received a 0 in Thai language—the first time this had happened. Previously, while the perpetrator's Thai language grades had not been outstanding, he had never failed the subject. The student reported that the perpetrator had complained to friends, saying "I submitted all my assignments, but I don't understand why my grade still couldn't be corrected." Several classmates have continued to provide statements to investigators.
