Chinese Embassy Warns Citizens to Respect Thai Laws and Culture

The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok has warned citizens to respect Thai laws and culture after several incidents involving Chinese fans at events and airports disrupted public order and safety.

Chinese Embassy Warns Citizens to Respect Thai Laws and Culture
9 Aug Khaosod

The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok has urged Chinese citizens attending cultural performances, sporting events and fan meetings in Thailand to strictly follow local laws and regulations and respect local people, following several recent incidents involving Chinese fans.

In a statement, the embassy reminded Chinese visitors to participate in events in an orderly manner, follow venue rules and respect Thailand's religious beliefs, customs and cultural traditions. It also urged them to treat Thai people with respect, friendship and tolerance and help preserve the traditional "Thailand-China family" friendship.

The embassy advised visitors to check event rules in advance, including requirements on entry, photography and prohibited items. It also urged Chinese citizens involved in disputes to remain calm and seek help through official channels, including event organisers, staff or local police, rather than taking matters into their own hands.

The reminder comes after incidents involving Chinese fans in Thailand, including fans breaching safety rules while following actors at Suvarnabhumi Airport and a confrontation between Chinese fans and security staff at an event involving Thai actors.

The embassy said Chinese citizens should take part in activities in a "civilised, rational and orderly" manner, strengthen friendly exchanges with Thai people and help promote closer ties between the two countries.

Hatyai School switched to online classes August 10-11 after a terminated South African English teacher posted threatening images and messages online, though police confirmed he had already left Thailand on July 19.

Hat Yai School Goes Online After Teacher Threat Scare
9 Aug Khaosod

Hatyaiwittayalai School in Songkhla will switch to online classes on 10-11 August following alleged threats by a former foreign English teacher who posted images of guns and threatening messages online after his contract was terminated.

The school said on 8 August that it had terminated the contract of a South African teacher in its English Programme on 24 July over alleged conduct that breached the terms of his employment. After the termination, the former teacher allegedly posted images of firearms, messages and audio clips in a LINE open chat group containing provocative and threatening content.

The posts caused concern among school administrators, staff, students and parents, prompting the school to report the matter to Hat Yai Police Station and consider legal action. The school said the temporary switch to online learning was intended to protect students and staff and prevent any incident that could threaten lives, physical safety or property.

Hat Yai police, working with Songkhla immigration officers, said they had checked the former teacher's records and found that he left Thailand on 19 July and there was no record of him returning. Officers also checked his former residence and found that no one was living there.

Police said they are maintaining security measures around the school and other relevant locations while legal proceedings are underway. The school has also been advised to strengthen security measures and prepare for potential risks.

The school urged students, parents and staff to follow official updates and carefully verify information before sharing it to avoid confusion or panic.

Opposition Reveals 860,000 Baht Transfer to Election Official

Opposition leaders presented evidence of 860,000 baht transferred to an Election Commission investigator during Senate elections, alleging coordinated fraud across multiple provinces including suspicious payments to candidates in Nakhon Pha

Opposition Reveals 860,000 Baht Transfer to Election Official
9 Aug Khaosod

On August 9, 2568, opposition coordination committee chairman Pricha Wachrasindhu presented detailed financial evidence of Senate election fraud spanning four provinces. In Nakhon Phanom, a 31,000-baht transfer was made for candidate airplane tickets, with two recipients not boarding their flights. Lamphun saw a local government officer transfer 21,000 baht to seven Senate candidates, with unclear justification. In Songkhla, a Senate candidate transferred 1.5 million baht to two other candidates under the guise of a loan, and another official transferred 60,000 baht claiming educational donation. Most significantly, Amnat Charoen's administrative officer Yanee Sifah, who previously worked for a government minister, transferred 860,000 baht across 13 transactions to Surachai Kanthiyanan, an Election Commission investigator, during the exact period of the Senate election. Pricha questioned why these transfers ceased after July if they were unrelated to the election, and demanded the Election Commission explain the investigation status and whether criminal misconduct occurred. He presented the scattered evidence across six provinces as credible proof of coordinated fraud that the Election Commission must refer to court.

Anti-Corruption Group Proposes 7 Solutions to Fix Thai Registry Fraud

A Thai anti-corruption group has identified nine methods of registry fraud, including fraudulent paternity claims and fake marriages used to illegally obtain Thai citizenship, warning the scheme threatens national security and economic comp

Anti-Corruption Group Proposes 7 Solutions to Fix Thai Registry Fraud
9 Aug Khaosod

The Zero Corruption working group, led by Thai Chamber of Commerce chairman Porn Aramnuatwanont, has expressed alarm over illegal Thai citizenship and registry status fraud, which has become increasingly complex and networked. The problem extends beyond foreign hiring schemes to include gaps in verification processes, poor data-sharing between agencies, and misconduct by some officials—enabling fraudulent government documents and false certifications linked to nominee structures, money laundering, illegal business, gray-market capital, and transnational crime. These actions threaten national security, undermine the credibility of the civil registration system, and damage Thailand's economic competitiveness.

The working group documented at least nine methods of fraudulent naturalization and registry status: (1) hiring Thai men to certify paternity of foreign women's children; (2) illegal surrogacy arrangements; (3) assuming the identity of deceased, missing, or overseas persons; (4) falsely adding names to household registers; (5) issuing or trading identity cards to non-Thai nationals; (6) false or inflated birth registrations; (7) hiring Thai men to marry foreign women with no genuine spousal relationship; (8) falsely certifying children born in Thailand; and (9) forging birth certificates and vital documents.

One widespread scheme involves hiring Thai men to marry or acknowledge paternity of pregnant foreign women so their children gain Thai nationality through the father's status. Brokers arrange the process, prepare documents, and liaise with hospitals and civil registration authorities. Since paternity recognition in some cases relies primarily on documents and sworn statements, inadequate fact-checking or official negligence can enable fraudulent legal status. The group also found misuse of deceased, missing, or overseas persons' data to obtain national ID cards, false household register entries using fake witnesses, and trafficking in identity documents of non-Thai nationals.

Thai nationality and civil registration status grant rights in education, healthcare, travel, employment, residence, and document holding, and can be exploited to facilitate illegal business, property acquisition, or transactions restricted to Thai nationals. They also serve to conceal identities of persons involved in drug trafficking, fugitives, illegal operations, and cross-border crime. The impact spans civil registration credibility, national ID integrity, security, business registration, property ownership, financial transactions, and fair economic competition.

Thai Government Holds Candle-Lighting Ceremony for Buddhist Lent
9 Aug Khaosod

The Office of the Prime Minister held a candle-lighting ceremony (Thian Phansa) on the occasion of Asahna Bucha Day and the beginning of Buddhist Lent for 2026, presided over by Phra Dhammavachirachon (Chum Punyachai), abbot of Wat Benchamabophit Dusit Wanaram and Regional Head Monk for Zone 17, with Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri representing the lay congregation. The ceremony took place recently at Wat Benchamabophit Dusit Wanaram in Bangkok's Dusit District. Officials from multiple government agencies, state enterprises, and financial institutions attended, including Yupa Thaveewattanakitboworn, Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister.

During the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak presided over the lighting of incense and candles as offerings to the Triple Gem and placed candles before the royal portrait, then paid respect to the presiding monk. Ten monks chanted the Buddhist scriptures, after which the deputy prime minister made a dedication of Phansa candles while officials presented supplies to support the temple. Participants then offered Thai desserts and alms to the monks, received blessings, and sprinkled lustral water for auspiciousness.

The Phansa candle-lighting ceremony is an important Buddhist tradition reflecting reverence for Buddhism and supporting the monastic community during the three-month retreat period, when monks intensively study and practice the Dharma and Vinaya. This year's ceremony demonstrates the government's commitment to preserving Buddhism and Thai cultural traditions, while encouraging public officials to help safeguard the nation's distinctive customs and heritage for future generations.

The Transport Ministry is accelerating rail system improvements in Udon Thani to support the World Horticultural Expo scheduled for late 2024. Pichete Kunatham, director-general of the State Railway Department, announced on August 9 that construction will begin on a temporary railway platform measuring 1.10 meters high and approximately 200 meters long to accommodate visitors arriving by train. Two level crossings will be built between Udon Thani and Na Phu stations, including one at kilometer 574+725.25 (approximately 23 meters wide) dedicated to expo project vehicles, and another at kilometer 574+815.25 (approximately 20 meters wide) serving as an entry and exit point for visitors. The State Railway of Thailand is currently in the competitive bidding process using funds from Udon Thani's central budget, with construction expected to start by end of August 2024 and be completed by October 2024. Railway staff will manage safety and control traffic at both crossing points.

The World Horticultural Expo of Udon Thani Province will run from November 1, 2024 to March 14, 2025 at the Nong Daeng wetland area in Kud Sra subdistrict, Mueang district, covering more than 1,030 acres under the theme "Diversity of Life: Connecting People, Water and Plants for Sustainable Living." The event represents an important opportunity to showcase Udon Thani's potential as an economic, tourism, and transportation hub for the upper northeastern region.

Kunatham emphasized that the rail system will play a crucial role in accommodating travelers from across the country and connecting neighboring provinces and countries. The State Railway Department is coordinating with relevant agencies to advance rail infrastructure development in line with government and ministry policies, aiming to make the expo accessible and safe while enhancing the rail network as the country's primary transport system to support logistics, tourism, and economic competitiveness.

Revered Abbot Luang Pu Plien of Wat Tai Kanchanaburi
9 Aug Khaosod

Phra Wisutthirangsi, known locally in Kanchanaburi and among amulet collectors as Luang Pu Plien Inthasoro or Luang Pu Wat Tai, was the former abbot of Wat Tai (officially Wat Chaiyachumpol Chanasokhram) in Ban Tai subdistrict, Mueang district, Kanchanaburi province. Beyond his academic credentials, he was a senior and revered elder monk who served as provincial ecclesiastical administrator of Kanchanaburi. Born on Saturday, May 2405 BE (April 5, 1862) as Thongkham to parents Muanintaraksa and Nang Jeeb Poolsawat, he was known in his youth as "Thongdam" due to his short stature and dark complexion. Concerned about his future, his parents enrolled him at Wat Tai as a student of Phra Kru Wisutthirangsi (Luang Pu Chang), the respected abbot and provincial ecclesiastical administrator of the time. Upon arrival at the monastery, his behavior transformed—he became calm, composed, and virtuous, prompting his father to rename him "Plien."

When he came of age, he was ordained at Wat Tai with Luang Pu Chang as his preceptor and two other distinguished monks as witnesses. He received the monastic name "Inthasoro," traditionally given to those born on Sunday, as his preceptor believed a Saturday-born person already possessed inherent strength and a Sunday name would balance this nature. Though initially intending to remain a monk for only seven days, he remained in robes for life. He devoted himself to studying both Khmer and Thai scriptures and adhered strictly to Buddhist discipline. He excelled in all learning and became the preceptor's favored disciple, eventually serving as his heir apparent.

Upon Luang Pu Chang's death, Plien was appointed successor abbot and received the ecclesiastical rank of Phra Kru Wisutthirangsi. He developed the monastery extensively, advanced education in both Buddhist studies and secular subjects, and established Wisutthirangsi School as the provincial monastery school. He assisted in developing numerous temples throughout Kanchanaburi and was appointed provincial ecclesiastical administrator. During the reign of Rama VI, he was elevated to the rank of Phra Racha Khana (Royal Sangha rank) and received a ceremonial title from the Supreme Patriarch, becoming Phra Wisutthirangsi Chinasanasophi.

He gained renown during the Indochina War period, known to possess powerful spiritual force—even notorious bandits held him in reverence. His involvement was sought for numerous consecrations and Buddhist rites, including important royal ceremonies such as the cremation of Rama V and the coronation of Rama VI. He had many accomplished disciples, notably Phra Thepmonkhonrangsi (Luang Pu Di) of Wat Nuea, Kanchanaburi, and Phra Thepwattanavimol (Luang Pu Chiang) of Wat Charoensuttharam, Samut Songkhram. In his advanced years, at approximately 85 years old, he suffered from ailments of old age beginning July 1946. Despite medical treatment from both modern and traditional practitioners, his condition gradually declined until his peaceful death on Friday, April 4, 1947, at 9:25 a.m., at the age of 85, with 64 years of monastic ordination. The royal cremation ceremony took place in late 1947 BE. His amulets remain highly sought after, particularly his portrait medallions from the first edition.
