Lanta Old Town: the island's capital, on the coast nobody visits

Before there were roads, the sheltered east coast was where the boats came in. Old Town was the harbour, the trading post and the meeting point of three peoples. It is still the district capital, and most visitors never see it.

2h ago Lanta News

Almost everybody who comes to Koh Lanta stays on the west coast, on the long strip of sand between Klong Dao and Kantiang. Almost nobody goes to the island's capital.

That is not a slight on Lanta Old Town. It is the whole point of it. The town is quiet now for exactly the reason it was busy before: it faces the wrong way.

When the sea was the road

Before there were roads on Koh Lanta, there was the water, and the east coast is the sheltered side. Old Town sits there, looking across at the mainland hills, in a spot calm enough for a wooden boat to sit out weather.

That made it the island's harbour and its commercial centre. Trading vessels working the route between Phuket, Penang and Singapore put in here, and what moved through the town was tin, charcoal and dried fish.

Look at the map with that in mind and the island reorganises itself. The beaches everyone flies in for today were the far side, the exposed side, the side facing open water. The valuable coast was the one nobody now visits.

Three arrivals, in order

The people of Old Town did not turn up all at once, and the order matters.

First the Urak Lawoi, the sea people, who have been on this island roughly five centuries and call it Satak. Then Muslim families from the Malay peninsula and Sumatra. Then, in the nineteenth century, southern Chinese arriving on the tin-mining wave that was reshaping this whole coast.

Each group is still here, and the town is one of the few places in Thailand where you can see all three layers on a single street.

The Chinese left the most visible mark

The buildings are the giveaway. The main street is lined with wooden shophouses raised on stilts over the water, teak, shuttered, some more than a hundred years old, built in the Sino-Portuguese style that runs down through Phuket and Penang.

They are not preserved as a museum piece. People live in them, and the shrines between them still smoke with incense.

What happened next is the part nobody writes down

Here is where the record thins out, and it is worth being straight about it. Old Town's rise is documented. Its decline is not, at least not in English.

What is obvious is the shape of it: at some point the land road mattered more than the sea route, tourism arrived on the west-facing beaches, and the centre of the island's economy walked across to the other coast. But we could not find a reliable date for when the pier stopped being the island's main way in, and we would rather say that than invent a decade to make the sentence flow.

If you know this history, or your family lived it, we would like to hear from you.

It is still the capital

This is the detail that surprises visitors most. Old Town is not a preserved village. It is the administrative seat of the whole district: the post office is here, the police station, the Buddhist temple, the Chinese temple, and the island's hospital.

There is also a community museum, put together by local people rather than by an outside institution, covering the three groups who built the place.

So when the west coast shuts for the monsoon and the beach road empties out, the island does not close. It just goes back to running from where it always ran from.

Thailand and New Zealand have elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, setting a target to triple bilateral trade to US$7.5 billion by 2045 and supporting plans to restore direct flights between Bangkok and Auckland in March 2027.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon made the announcement after full bilateral talks at Government House in Wellington, held during Anutin's official visit marking 70 years of diplomatic relations.

The two leaders signed a Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership, raising Thailand-New Zealand ties to a higher level. They also agreed on the Thailand-New Zealand Joint Plan of Action 2026-2030 as a framework for implementing the partnership.

The plan focuses on four pillars: political and security cooperation, including action against transnational crime, online scams and human trafficking; economic, trade and innovation cooperation in innovation, food and energy security, the green economy, sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation; education, culture and people-to-people ties including skills development and capacity-building; and regional and multilateral cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms, APEC and other international forums.

Both sides aim to triple bilateral trade to US$7.5 billion by 2045 and will develop the Thailand-New Zealand Closer Economic Partnership to create new opportunities for businesses and people in both countries. Anutin expressed satisfaction that senior Thai business representatives joined the visit and met with New Zealand officials and businesses, opening cooperation opportunities in new sectors.

Following the joint press conference, the two leaders witnessed the signing of four cooperation documents: a cultural cooperation agreement; a memorandum of understanding between Thailand's Office of the Civil Service Commission and Education New Zealand; an information-sharing and partnership agreement between the Royal Thai Police and New Zealand Police; and a private-sector agreement between Chata Instruments Company Limited and Aeroqual Limited.

Anutin also sought New Zealand's support for Thailand's bid to join the OECD, which Luxon confirmed New Zealand would fully support.

Thai Airways plans to resume direct Bangkok-Auckland services in March 2027. Anutin said he would seek to bring forward the target date to support tourism, trade, investment, education and people-to-people exchanges.

American Woman Arrested in Bangkok for Child Abduction

On August 20, 2025, police from the Immigration Bureau's Region 3 conducted a search and arrested a 45-year-old American woman at a hostel in Bangkok's Prawet district. She had her residency permission revoked due to an arrest warrant issued by an Oregon court in the United States for parental kidnapping. The child, an 8-year-old boy, was safely recovered and reunited with his father.

The operation was authorized by Major General Songproed Sirisuk, commander of Immigration Region 3, who instructed officers to take decisive action against foreign nationals using Thailand as a hiding place for crimes. Police received intelligence from U.S. authorities indicating an American citizen wanted for child abduction had fled to Thailand. After locating and verifying her identity through her passport, officers took her into custody.

The case dates back to early 2025, when the boy's father, an American, was granted custody following his separation from the mother—the suspect. The mother had alcohol and mental health issues. However, she abducted the child and evaded the father's search efforts for over 18 months. The father hired a private investigator, filed reports, and created a website to locate his son, which eventually went viral across the United States.

The Thai Immigration Bureau obtained crucial information leading to the suspect's discovery. Officers coordinated with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to locate and apprehend her, successfully returning the child to his father. Major General Songproed emphasized that Thailand will not serve as a haven for foreign fugitives, particularly in cases involving child safety, and pledged full cooperation with international law enforcement agencies.

Kalayanawat School in Khon Kaen has moved classes online for one day after an alleged threat of violence by a student prompted safety concerns.

The school announced on its Facebook page that all classes on Friday, 21 August, would be held online from students' homes, while teachers and other education staff would continue reporting to the school as usual.

In its announcement, the school said it had received information requiring careful verification and assessment. It said the temporary change was intended to strengthen safety measures and reassure students, parents, teachers, and staff.

Students were instructed to attend their usual classes online through the channels designated by the school. The school said it had coordinated with relevant agencies to examine the information, assess the situation, and implement appropriate safety measures.

It also asked parents to closely supervise students during online learning and urged students, parents, teachers, and staff to rely only on the school's official communication channels. The school warned against sharing unverified information that could cause confusion or unnecessary concern.

According to an unnamed source, students had argued in a Line group chat on 20 August over an unspecified issue. One student allegedly posted comments threatening violence before leaving the group.

The school, located about 300 metres from Khon Kaen City Police Station, reportedly contacted police and temporarily shifted to online learning while the situation is investigated.

Flash Floods Swamp Mae Sot as Moei River Overflows
3h ago Khaosod

Mae Sot in Tak province was hit by flash floods on the morning of 21 August after heavy rain persisted through the night, causing waterways to overflow and flooding communities across Mae Sot Municipality. The Mae Sot Fresh Market and several low-lying residential areas were inundated with 30 to 50 centimetres of water, prompting emergency announcements and evacuations. District officials mobilized the Volunteer Defense Corps and municipal personnel to assist residents in moving belongings and evacuating vulnerable people to safer ground.

Along the Thailand-Myanmar border, the Moei River swelled more than one metre above its banks, with water levels rising by the hour and flooding areas on both sides, including Myawaddy in Myanmar. The Rim Moei Market in Mae Sot was engulfed by floodwaters as traders raced to salvage goods, while long-tail boats navigated strong currents to transport people and pets away from danger. Authorities warned the situation could worsen in the afternoon and issued Cell Broadcast alerts urging residents in Mae Sot and Mae Ramat districts to immediately move belongings, vehicles, and vulnerable family members to higher ground, with instructions to contact local village chiefs or administrative organisations for evacuation assistance.

Thailand Won't Abandon Japanese Auto Investors, PM Says

Thailand's PM pledges full support for Japanese automakers, saying the government won't abandon long-standing investors and will remove obstacles to keep them confident in the country's automotive sector.

Thailand Won't Abandon Japanese Auto Investors, PM Says
3h ago Khaosod

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dismissed reports that Japanese investors are moving their production bases out of Thailand, saying the government will not abandon long-standing investors and will fully support the country's traditional automotive industry.

Anutin said the government places importance on investors from all countries, particularly Japan, which has used Thailand as a major production base for decades and has become deeply integrated into the country's industrial sector.

The government is prepared to adjust business conditions and remove obstacles to ensure Japanese investors remain confident in Thailand, he said.

"The government's core policy is to remain open and improve various conditions to make business operations more flexible under our good relationship, so that we can achieve sustainable growth and long-term economic cooperation and maintain Japan's strong production base in Thailand," Anutin said.

He said the automotive industry was particularly important because most components, including engines, vehicle bodies, chassis and various systems, are manufactured in Thailand by Japanese brands.

"This is something we cannot abandon, and we must ensure that investors do not abandon Thailand either," he said.

Anutin said Japanese investors had been operating in Thailand for so long that the two countries' automotive production systems had become deeply intertwined.

"We are ready to ease obstacles to reassure them that we have not abandoned them. It cannot be a situation where we give them everything when we need them, but once they are doing well, we later add more conditions," he said.

EV rules to be reviewed

On electric vehicles, Anutin said he had assigned Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas to review measures governing investors from different countries.

The review aims to prevent Japan's automotive industry from being placed at a disadvantage as Japanese companies enter Thailand's EV sector, he said.

The government will consider restructuring relevant measures to ensure fair competition and maintain confidence among automakers from different countries, according to Anutin.

He acknowledged that EV manufacturers initially import many components from overseas, but said new domestic supply chains would eventually emerge.

These are expected to include batteries, computer systems and other components, which production requirements would encourage manufacturers to establish in Thailand, he said.

The government will also focus on maintaining political and economic stability as a key factor in attracting and retaining investment over the long term.

530 billion baht in foreign investment in first half

Anutin pointed to investment figures as evidence that foreign investors remain confident in Thailand.

He said foreign investment in Thailand exceeded 1 trillion baht last year, while actual foreign investment had already reached about 530 billion baht in the first half of the year.

Thai Horror Film Sells to 10 Countries Before Domestic Release

Thai horror film Midnight Incense has secured distribution across 10 countries before its August 27 domestic release, with plans for further expansion into Western markets.

Thai Horror Film Sells to 10 Countries Before Domestic Release
3h ago Khaosod

The Thai horror film Midnight Incense (00:00) is generating strong international interest even before its local theatrical debut. The film has already secured distribution rights across 10 countries spanning Southeast Asia, Asia, and Australia—including Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Laos, and Australia.

The film's distinctive appeal lies in its plot centered on house rules tied to midnight and incense, set within a traditional Thai house, a setting rarely used in contemporary Thai horror. This creates a uniquely tense and mysterious atmosphere while maintaining distinctly Thai cultural flavor.

Following strong international market reception, the production team plans to expand licensing deals into additional markets across Asia, America, and Europe to bring Midnight Incense to global audiences. The project has also received budget support from the Ministry of Culture's Cultural Promotion Department to support Thailand's film industry.

Cast members include Saathida Sriprom as Praew, Ekkapop Tatata as Jo, and Ingkrat Damrongsakdigul as Sen, with supporting roles by Thanapol Juksida, Kasidech Dechwongnya, Panichai Sirisuwanna, Nopawan Sukharam, and director Warrit Nilklom.

The Thai ghost story Midnight Incense (00:00) premieres in cinemas on August 27.
