Long Queues as Thais Appeal Welfare Card Rejections

Thousands of Thais queued at banks across the country to appeal welfare card rejections after the government disqualified nearly half of 18.82 million applicants for its 2026 assistance program. Rejected beneficiaries say the 300-baht month

Long Queues as Thais Appeal Welfare Card Rejections
21 Jul Khaosod

On July 21, large numbers of residents gathered at Krung Thai Bank's provincial administration branch on Klang Muang Road in Khon Kaen Municipality to file appeals after the government announced 2026 welfare card results. Of 18.82 million registered applicants, only 9.51 million met the criteria, meaning nearly half of previously eligible people lost their benefits. Most of those filing appeals had been rejected, creating long queues from morning onward that required security staff to manage and organize the process.

Ruay, 72, from Tha Phra subdistrict in Khon Kaen, said that truly poor people should receive government assistance. He noted that 300 baht monthly from a welfare card helps significantly with household purchases and that the government need not increase the amount, though he wished the program could reach more people. He added that he had received the benefit under General Prayut Chan-o-cha's administration but did not understand what criteria were used to determine who qualifies as genuinely poor versus merely wanting assistance.

Kaew, 66, from Muang district in Khon Kaen, said she was disqualified because of a motorcycle debt. She came to verify her eligibility but was rejected, so she filed an appeal. She noted that 300 baht monthly genuinely helps support family needs—groceries, fish sauce, and household essentials—and expressed sadness at losing the benefit. "I wonder if the government thinks I'm not truly poor," she said. "I rent my home and carry debt, so how am I considered wealthy? I urge Prime Minister Anatin Charnvirakul and the Interior Minister to reconsider the criteria, because truly poor people struggle greatly and should not be cut off."

Thai Gelato Brand PARAMETER Apologizes for Glass in Customer's Dessert

Thai gelato brand PARAMETER apologized after a customer suffered mouth injuries from glass shards in her dessert, sparking social media backlash over food safety practices and the company's initial response.

Thai Gelato Brand PARAMETER Apologizes for Glass in Customer's Dessert
21 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — 21 July 2026, Renowned Thai gelato brand PARAMETER has issued a public apology after a customer said she found shards of glass in her gelato, leaving her with injuries to her mouth and prompting widespread criticism on social media over the company's food safety standards and handling of the incident.

The controversy began after the customer shared her experience in the Facebook consumer group "We Are Consumers", saying she bit into a hard object while eating the shop's gelato and later discovered it was broken glass.

She said the incident left cuts to her tongue and inner cheek, causing bleeding, while some fragments were swallowed, requiring hospital treatment.

The customer stated that after reporting the incident, the shop covered her medical expenses and refunded the cost of the gelato. However, she said she was disappointed by the company's communication and accountability, arguing that a senior executive or the owner should have contacted her personally to apologise, explain how the incident had occurred, and outline measures to prevent it from happening again.

Following widespread attention on social media, PARAMETER released an official statement of apology to the customer, stating: "PARAMETER would like to express our sincere regret and heartfelt apology to the customer for the incident. We fully recognise that what happened has affected the customer's feelings and confidence in us, and we regard that trust as our highest priority."

The company said that as soon as it became aware of the incident, management and staff provided the customer with assistance, advised her to seek medical treatment, accepted responsibility for medical expenses, and continued to monitor her condition. PARAMETER added that it has reviewed and strengthened safety measures at every stage of operations, including the handling of glass containers, pre-service inspections, operational procedures and staff training, in order to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.

The company said the incident has been an important lesson and has reinforced its determination to further improve customer care and safety standards.

Thai Dairy Industry Wins Double Award as Top Brands

Malibu condensed milk and Orchid butter won top brand awards in Thailand, with Malibu claiming the title for the fifth consecutive year by maintaining quality and relevance through consumer engagement and strategic collaborations.

Thai Dairy Industry Wins Double Award as Top Brands
21 Jul Khaosod

Thai Dairy Industry Co., Ltd. reinforced its brand-building success after Malibu condensed milk and Orchid butter won the Marketeer No.1 Brand Thailand 2026 award based on a survey of the most trusted and preferred brands by consumers. Malibu condensed milk received the award in the sweetened condensed milk category for the fifth consecutive year, while Orchid butter won in the butter category, reflecting the strength of both brands that have grown alongside Thai consumers for decades.

Pichayathep Yuktaswee, Deputy Managing Director of Thai Dairy Industry Co., Ltd., said the award is not just a guarantee of brand success but proof of consumer trust in Malibu over time. "For us, trust doesn't come from marketing campaigns but from keeping promises to consumers every day. Malibu has upheld quality for over 60 years and continues to evolve the brand to match modern lifestyles, especially for those who value healthy living and seek products that fit their daily needs. Today, building brand awareness alone is no longer enough. What matters is brand relevance—keeping the brand meaningful and connected to consumers at all times. This starts with listening to consumer insights and applying them to product development, innovation, and communication."

Throughout the past year, Malibu advanced growth through brand collaborations with leading partners including Auntie Anne's, After You, Babycakes, Karun, and Yolk, as well as creating content with new-generation CEOs and creators across various fields. This helped generate momentum online, expand brand relevance, and drive engagement with younger consumers. Pichayathep said, "Consumers change rapidly. What we do is listen more. We use social media, digital platforms, and TikTok as spaces to talk with consumers, especially younger generations. I create content myself and read every comment because often the best insights don't come from conference rooms but from conversations with consumers."

Orchid butter continued to assert its leadership in the butter market under the concept "Delicious guaranteed with Orchid," which has built long-term consumer confidence. Sudthanom Kansutt, Director of Thai Dairy Industry Co., Ltd., said Orchid's success comes from maintaining quality standards and understanding the needs of both B2B and B2C consumers. "For Orchid, trust comes from results. Every time a consumer chooses Orchid, they must be confident the dish will turn out delicious as intended. Consistency in quality is the heart of our brand and the origin of 'Delicious guaranteed with Orchid.'" One success from the past year was a brand collaboration with Guss Damn Good, which received strong consumer response and reinforced Orchid's image as a brand focused on ingredient quality and creating new consumer experiences.

Both executives agree that the success of Malibu and Orchid stems from putting consumers at the center and continuously developing products, innovations, and communications to keep the brands meaningful and in consumers' hearts. The Marketeer No.1 Brand Thailand 2026 award, won consecutively for five years, reflects this commitment.

Swedish Diplomat's Thai Ice Cream Review Wins Over Internet

A Swedish diplomat's enthusiastic review of Thai coconut ice cream sparked viral social media delight, with Thai users playfully challenging him to hunt down the authentic street-vendor version next.

Swedish Diplomat's Thai Ice Cream Review Wins Over Internet
21 Jul Khaosod

A social media post by the Swedish Embassy in Thailand featuring First Secretary Emanuel Lundin trying traditional Thai coconut ice cream has delighted Thai internet users, many of whom urged him to try the country's iconic street-vendor version next.

Lundin praised the dessert for its ultra-smooth texture and sweet flavour, saying it was perfectly suited to Thailand's hot weather.

The embassy said the coconut ice cream was served with traditional toppings including peanuts, palm seeds and sweetcorn, and recommended a vendor outside Two Pacific Place near BTS Nana station, where a serving costs just 20 baht.

After the post went viral, Thai social media users flooded the comments section, saying that to experience authentic Thai coconut ice cream, visitors should try the classic pushcart version sold by roaming street vendors. Many comments joked about the challenge of buying ice cream from the mobile vendors, which are known for moving quickly through neighbourhoods.

"A Swede is amazing for managing to flag down the ice cream cart. Even many Thais can't catch it in time," one user joked. Another wrote: "Did you have to run after the cart, sir?" A third replied: "Why run? That's exhausting. I just follow it on my motorbike until I get my ice cream."

Others shared recommendations for their favourite vendors, with one commenter writing: "The only ice cream I love is Pai Thong. It's 25 baht a serving," describing it as an affordable dessert with a flavour familiar to Thai people. Some users also playfully referenced recent controversy surrounding a well-known gelato brand in Thailand, posting comments such as: "Better eat it at minus seven degrees," while another joked: "It's easy to find, reasonably priced, and if you become friends with the vendor, you can even call ahead to order. For just 40 baht, you get a special serving that leaves you completely full. The texture is smooth and chewy with a great bite. The only catches are making sure they hear you call them, and being able to run fast enough to catch up!"

Despite the jokes, most commenters praised the Swedish diplomat for embracing a local Thai favourite and said that if he returns to Thailand, traditional pushcart coconut ice cream should be at the top of his list of foods to try.

Thailand Demolishes Illegal Structures in Phuket Forest Reserve
21 Jul Khaosod

Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin announced on July 21 that a major demolition operation on July 20 successfully removed 50 illegal structures from Nai Nui Beach in Phuket's protected forest area. The operation, undertaken as part of the government's "Phuket Model" policy, was conducted in cooperation with multiple agencies including the Interior Ministry, military, and police. Suchat emphasized that the action enforces the law against violators and aims to restore order, not damage tourism, with the recovered land valued at approximately 2 billion baht. The minister stated he personally led the operation and will accept sole responsibility for any legal challenges, noting that the land titles were previously invalidated by the Supreme Court in 2014 and are legally considered part of the forest. He revealed that helicopter surveys identified 8-9 additional illegal encroachments in the area, with plans to demolish them progressively, including structures within Sirinath National Park. Suchat addressed the search for a local influential figure, sarcastically noting that despite public announcements, the person has not dared to appear publicly. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to reclaiming approximately 300-400 rai total and converting it into recreational forest for public use, stating he welcomes any lawsuits as he takes full responsibility for the operation.
