Mexico's President Urges Safe World Cup Celebrations
Mexico's president urges fans to celebrate responsibly during the World Cup after four people died in crushing crowds following a victory over Ecuador last month.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on the public to take collective responsibility for safe celebrations of the national team's performance in the 2026 World Cup, particularly regarding excessive alcohol consumption and avoiding overcrowded gathering areas. A tragedy occurred following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador on June 30 in the Round of 32, when massive crowds gathered to celebrate in Mexico City. The celebration, which drew millions of people, descended into chaos as crowds crushed together, causing people to fall and be trampled, resulting in at least four deaths. Mexico is preparing for a Round of 16 match against England on July 5, and if they win, celebrations are expected to be even more intense. Sheinbaum stated: "We must avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can cause many problems, and we should try to avoid overcrowded areas. Both fans and officials have a responsibility to ensure celebrations remain safe."
