Panel Investigates Burial Site of Gun Used in MP Shooting
A House committee investigating an MP's shooting visited a Navy facility to verify claims that the gun used in the March attack was destroyed and buried in 2021, though no excavation was conducted to confirm the weapon's presence.
On July 24, 2025, the House committee on law, justice, and human rights, led by Rangsiman Rome (deputy leader of the People's Party and committee chair), visited the Navy Weapons Bureau in Sattahip district, Chachoengsao province, to investigate facts surrounding the gun used in the shooting of Kamlasak Leewamao, Nakhon Si Thammarat MP from the Palang Pracharath Party, which occurred on March 20.
Evidence and investigative leads indicated that the firearm used in the attack had been decommissioned since 2021, handed over to the Navy Weapons Bureau for destruction, cut into seven pieces, and buried in a restricted military area. However, police later recovered what appeared to be the same weapon, prompting the committee to conduct on-site verification to clarify the matter for public understanding.
During the inspection, the committee received a briefing and observed a demonstration of the weapons destruction procedure. However, no excavation was conducted at the burial site, preventing verification of whether the weapon was actually present there. Committee chair Rangsiman Rome stated that without excavating the burial pit, they cannot conclusively determine whether the gun was genuinely destroyed and buried, or whether the burial itself was improperly conducted. He noted that the Navy has established its own investigation committee, and the parliamentary committee may request further documentation, particularly evidence related to the claimed destruction.
The committee acknowledged that definitive proof would require excavation, though such action may exceed the committee's authority. The shooting victim, MP Kamlasak, did not attend the site visit due to a pilgrimage commitment in Saudi Arabia, and delegated his lawyer and party representatives to accompany the committee and gather information for ongoing legal proceedings.
