BANGKOK — Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has responded to criticism over his public singing appearances by sharing ABBA's "Thank You For The Music" along with a famous Thai verse praising the importance of music. Anutin posted the song on his personal Facebook account on Tuesday, following online debate over his singing a Chinese song, "Tian Mi Mi" (Sweet Honey), during his official visit to China. Alongside the ABBA song, the prime minister shared the lines: "Those who have no music in their hearts / Are truly strange and peculiar people." The post was accompanied by saxophone, musical note and microphone emojis. The verse, widely known among Thai audiences, comes from a poem by King Rama VI and is often interpreted as highlighting music's role in enriching people's emotions and humanity. Anutin's post came after criticism that he frequently plays musical instruments and sings at public events, with some critics questioning the timing of such appearances amid various domestic issues. The prime minister has previously been seen performing music at official and public gatherings, including during his overseas engagements.

Nightlife Venues Must Prioritize Safety Standards

Nightlife Venues Must Prioritize Safety Standards
21 Jul Khaosod

Solving the problem of mass fire casualties at nightlife venues requires cooperation from all sides. Government officials must enforce strict regulations, business owners must prioritize customer safety, and visitors themselves must stay alert. Entertainment venues chosen for dining, drinking, and music should not bring suffering—past disasters show that such incidents can be fatal or cause lifelong disability.

Visitors should inspect venues for clear, unobstructed entrances and exits, clearly marked emergency exits, and safe escape routes in case of chaos. While enjoying nightlife, people must also protect themselves.

Past tragedies serve as warnings: Santika Club on New Year's 2009 killed 67 people with over 200 injured; Mountain B in Chonburi four years ago killed 24 with about 50 injured; and a Ladprao beer bar killed 34 with many more injured. Victims from these disasters continue to suffer severely today, reminding young people that they can enjoy nightlife—but it must be safe.

Visitors must inspect venues for hazardous conditions, check that entrances, exits, and fire escapes meet standards, and ensure that in an emergency, the number of patrons can evacuate safely without being crushed. Many restaurants and bars exist—choose ones meeting safety standards.

Currently, officials including Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and metropolitan police are conducting strict inspections—a positive step. Business owners must urgently fix safety defects. Visitors must protect themselves by assessing whether a venue is safe to enter.

All parties must cooperate to prevent another mass-casualty fire disaster in a bar or beer hall. Remember the victims of past tragedies and stay vigilant.

Bangkok Bank Profit Drops 16% in First Half of 2025

Bangkok Bank's first-half profit fell 16% to 20.5 billion baht as lower interest rates squeezed margins, though loan growth and improved fee income partially offset the decline.

Bangkok Bank Profit Drops 16% in First Half of 2025
21 Jul Khaosod

Bangkok Bank and its subsidiaries reported net profit of 20.492 billion baht for the first half of 2025, down 16.2% compared to the same period last year, with net interest income falling 12.4% due to the bank's interest rate reductions, resulting in a net interest margin of 2.46%.

Loan expansion remained a supporting factor for the bank's revenue, partially offsetting the impact of lower rates. Fee and service income improved thanks to continued growth in bancassurance and mutual fund services, along with increased securities commissions from capital market conditions and trading activity. However, other operating income declined.

Operating expenses decreased 6.5%, reflecting proper cost management alongside continuous operational efficiency improvements, bringing the cost-to-income ratio to 47.1%. Expected credit losses totaled 17.435 billion baht, down from the previous year as a result of the bank's consistently cautious reserve provisioning policy.

Bangkok Bank continued its prudent and careful business approach while maintaining appropriate levels of financial stability, liquidity, and capital. As of June 30, 2025, the bank's total loans stood at 2.678 trillion baht, up 2.7% from year-end, driven by corporate and foreign business lending. The impaired loan ratio remained manageable at 3.3%, while the loan loss reserve coverage ratio remained strong at 306.3% due to the bank's continued conservative provisioning practices.

Deposits as of June 30, 2025 totaled 3.212 trillion baht, up 0.5% from year-end, with a loan-to-deposit ratio of 83.4%. The bank's total capital ratio, Tier 1 capital ratio, and Common Equity Tier 1 ratio stood at 21.4%, 16.9%, and 16.9% respectively, all exceeding the Bank of Thailand's minimum requirements.

Myanmar national arrested at Mae Sod border attempting to smuggle advanced FPV drones into Thailand; police seized four assembled drones and components worth significant value during inspection of suspicious shipments.

Myanmar Man Arrested Smuggling High-Tech FPV Drones Into Thailand
21 Jul Khaosod

Police and military personnel from Tak province arrested Min Nee Zaw, 28, a Myanmar national, for attempting to illegally smuggle FPV drones across the Mae Sod border. Authorities seized four fully assembled FPV drones, seven drone frames with components, and numerous accessories including motors, FPV cameras, control boards, and signal antennas after tracking suspicious packages shipped from Chiang Mai to Mae Sod.

Investigators discovered the contraband while inspecting a transport company and traced suspicious parcels to the suspect's residence. When questioned, Min claimed he was merely receiving packages on behalf of an unknown person and had no knowledge of their contents or purpose. However, authorities charged him under customs law for concealing and facilitating the illegal import of goods that bypassed customs procedures.

The seized FPV drones represent advanced unmanned aerial technology with capabilities far exceeding commercial drones, including superior speed, signal transmission, and flight control in complex environments. Officials emphasized that the interception was critical not only in preventing smuggling but also in disrupting potential security threats to Thailand's border regions. The suspect and seized materials were handed to Mae Sod Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Thailand Removes Red-Whiskered Bulbul From Protected Wildlife List

Thailand's Cabinet approved removing the red-whiskered bulbul from its protected wildlife list, allowing easier breeding and commercial development while authorities monitor wild populations for decline.

Thailand Removes Red-Whiskered Bulbul From Protected Wildlife List
21 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — Thailand's Cabinet has approved a draft ministerial regulation to remove the red-whiskered bulbul, also known as the "Nok Krong Hua Juk" songbird, from the country's protected wildlife list, paving the way for wider breeding and commercial development.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Prertwiwatana said on Tuesday that the Cabinet approved the principle of the draft regulation proposed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The move would remove the red-whiskered bulbul from the list of protected non-aquatic wildlife species, where it is currently listed as a protected bird under item No. 576. The government said the change aims to support breeding, increase captive populations and develop the bird as an economic animal that can generate income for breeders.

Under the current regulations, owners, breeders and traders of red-whiskered bulbuls are required to obtain official permits and meet legal requirements, which have limited wider breeding and expansion, Lalida said.

She added that changing the bird's status would allow people to breed and propagate the species more easily, helping increase captive populations and reducing reliance on catching birds from the wild.

The government also said the move would support local traditions, particularly in southern Thailand, where bird keeping and singing competitions are part of community culture.

The Wildlife Conservation and Protection Committee has approved the removal of the red-whiskered bulbul from the protected list, while instructing the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to closely monitor wild populations.

If the bird's population declines or faces risks to its survival, authorities will reconsider restoring its protected status, Lalida said.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment previously opened a public consultation on the draft regulation between 11 and 25 February 2026. Lalida said most respondents supported the proposal, while relevant agencies raised no objections and viewed it as a way to create economic value for breeders.

"The change aims to balance support for local livelihoods and community economies with natural resource conservation," Lalida said, adding that the government would promote responsible breeding while continuing to monitor wild populations to prevent ecological impacts and illegal capture.

Disney Run Thailand 2026 Slammed for Poor Event Management

Disney Run Thailand 2026 faced backlash from participants who complained the July 19 Bangkok event lacked Disney atmosphere, with critics joking they got the "Run" but zero "Disney" due to poor management and long queues.

Disney Run Thailand 2026 Slammed for Poor Event Management
21 Jul Khaosod

Disney Run Thailand 2026 has drawn widespread online criticism after participants complained about organizational issues, with social media users joking: "You get the 'Run', but zero 'Disney'."

The running event was held around Rama VIII Bridge in Bangkok on the morning of July 19, attracting a large number of participants. The competition featured two race categories: a 5-kilometre run and a 10-kilometre run.

Following the event, several participants and social media users shared their experiences, with many criticising the event management and saying the atmosphere did not deliver the "Disney" experience they had expected. The Consumers Facebook page raised the issue in a post, highlighting complaints that most participants felt they only received the "Run" part without any "Disney" element, with some noting that participant costumes looked more impressive than the event's overall presentation.

The post sparked widespread discussion online. Some commenters said they felt fortunate to have been unable to secure tickets, while others described the event as a "bland, unseasoned version of Disney." One comment stated: "At first, I felt disappointed and frustrated that I could not get a ticket in time. But after seeing how the event was organised this morning, I feel lucky that I missed out."

Some participants praised the quality of the medals, shirts, and capes provided, but criticised the management system, including poor transport arrangements, long waiting times to exit the parking area, and lengthy queues at food stations that caused many attendees to give up waiting. The event's mascots also became a point of contention, with some saying the designs and overall atmosphere did not meet expectations for a globally recognized brand. Others made sarcastic comparisons to the "Dan Neramit era"—referring to a defunct Bangkok amusement park—while questioning whether licensing limitations may have affected the event's presentation.

Despite the criticism, Disney Run Thailand 2026 still attracted strong interest from Disney fans and runners. The backlash highlighted participants' expectations for an event that combines smooth operations with a fully immersive Disney experience, rather than simply functioning as an ordinary running event.

Government to Overhaul Welfare Card Eligibility Criteria

Thailand's government will overhaul welfare card eligibility criteria after acknowledging that flawed screening processes exclude struggling people who genuinely need help, particularly those with outdated vehicle registrations or pursuing

Government to Overhaul Welfare Card Eligibility Criteria
21 Jul Khaosod

The government announced cabinet meeting results addressing public demands to review welfare card eligibility criteria, a major current issue. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul noted that public feedback shows many struggling people fail the screening despite genuine need for help—such as those registered as owners of defunct vehicles still in records, or students advancing their education whose true circumstances don't match current criteria. The prime minister acknowledged gaps in welfare card screening rules. He stressed that citizens should not have to approach the state or wait for appeals; government agencies must instead proactively reach out to communities, conduct surveys, listen, and solve problems so deserving people don't fall through the system. He assigned the Interior Ministry to coordinate with provincial governors and local agencies to urgently survey those who failed screening but merit assistance, and submit data to the Finance Ministry for quick review. The Transport Ministry must accelerate updating vehicle registration databases, reduce citizen burdens in scrapping defunct registrations, and fast-track legal and regulatory amendments. The Finance Ministry must urgently review screening criteria to align with fact and current hardship, identify rules that exclude the deserving, and propose improvements to cabinet. The prime minister's recognition of public concerns and directive for proactive government action on welfare card screening is appropriate, with focus on updating data to reflect true circumstances, especially vehicle and motorcycle ownership rules—currently a severe problem. Without fixes, millions of citizens risk being left out. Additional affected groups include out-of-school students under the Education Ministry and vulnerable populations under the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, numbering hundreds of thousands. The hope is for more proactive government work to close loopholes and help people comprehensively and accurately.

Thai rock legend Sek Loso, or Seksak Sukphimai, held a major press conference with his bandmates announcing the 30th anniversary concert "30 Years of LOSO: Worth the Wait" at Lido Hall 2 in Siam Square. The band will perform all their hit songs, and Sek discussed his role as an idol to younger musicians, particularly offering support to rising 16-year-old rock guitarist and singer Nene, who is currently gaining international recognition for Thailand.

When asked how LOSO has inspired the new generation, Sek said: "I believe many young people listen to LOSO's music a lot. I'm grateful and want to give encouragement to everyone who follows us. I hope our music brings happiness and knowledge to all listeners."

Regarding Nene, whom he called a fan of LOSO, Sek expressed admiration: "I have great respect for her. At just 16 years old, to play guitar and sing at her level is truly excellent. I heard that Sek is her idol too. I'm thankful for that mutual admiration, and I want to give her encouragement and cheer her on to the finals. All Thai people should support Nene."

When asked how to advise the many young people who consider him an idol, Sek emphasized dedication: "I want young people to practice extensively. When I played guitar, I practiced 6 to 8 hours daily, then performed at night for another 3 to 4 hours—spending 10 hours a day with the guitar. For anyone interested in music, practice hard. Music can keep you away from drug addiction. I am completely clean now and have been drug-free for eight years. I ask Thai people to trust us, and I want everyone to know that Sek, LOSO, and the entire band are now completely pure. Thank you for your support."

Thailand Revises Welfare Card Rules to Help Fraud Victims
21 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanpraphas announced on July 21 that the government is rushing to hold a meeting this week to review criteria and conditions for a revised state welfare card program, with cabinet approval targeted for July 27. The initiative aims to help genuinely disadvantaged citizens, as public complaints have revealed that many unqualified applicants were receiving benefits. The Finance Ministry has identified 2.3 million additional eligible recipients who meet all new criteria.

During the review process, authorities discovered serious fraud involving approximately 20,000 to 30,000 cases where citizens' personal data was misused to register them as company directors without their knowledge, and fraudsters used their names to open stock trading accounts. Ekniti emphasized that genuine victims of this fraud will receive full assistance and benefit restoration, while perpetrators will face legal action. He stressed that companies using villagers' names as employees or board members of shell companies operated by business groups will be held accountable.

Ekniti outlined the welfare card program's principles, developed in consultation with the Interior Ministry, noting that the government will deploy officials to help affected communities. He reassured citizens that truly disadvantaged people have nothing to worry about and will receive full government support. The welfare card complements other assistance programs including elderly pensions of 600-1,000 baht monthly and disability benefits, all of which remain unchanged. The revised welfare card program will specifically target those with no existing welfare benefits.

At the scene, a Honda Click motorcycle stopped behind a Toyota Hilux Revo was crushed against the Revo's rear end and wedged under the white Hino truck. Officers found the body of Wachree Yuenyung, 24, from Ban Lao Subdistrict, Kham Cha-i District, Mukdahan Province, on the roadway. The truck driver stated he was hauling construction materials from Kham Cha-i when his brakes failed at the intersection, causing him to collide with the motorcycle and then slide into the parked pickup. A breath test showed the driver's alcohol level at 191 milligrams per cent, far exceeding legal limits. Police charged him with driving under the influence and reckless driving causing death, with the case transferred to Mueang Mukdahan Police Station for further prosecution.
