27 Jul Khaosod

On July 27, 2025, Colonel Ekwaridit Chobchuyot, deputy spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4, announced developments in the investigation of the July 22 attack on the Buko Sami checkpoint in Rangae District, Narathiwat, where gunmen fired weapons and threw pipe bombs at rangers from the 45th Ranger Unit Task Force, killing five officers and injuring six civilians. The Narathiwat Provincial Court approved an arrest warrant for U Azesan on July 24, and authorities are actively pursuing him while seeking additional warrants as evidence emerges.

Officials questioned three suspects believed connected to the attack, with one released after failing to produce linking evidence. The investigation revealed that the firearm used in the attack is connected to multiple previous security incidents. Authorities are analyzing CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and witness statements and have preliminarily determined the attackers are linked to militant groups in Janaé District, involving key figures U Abdulla and U Masawi, with additional accomplices and supporters still under investigation.

The security command thanked the public for cooperation and urged anyone with information about the perpetrators to contact security officials or call the 24-hour emergency hotline 1341, assuring callers of confidentiality. Officials declined to release tactical details to avoid compromising ongoing pursuit operations and the investigation.

Son Discovers Parents Dead After Bringing Durian Home

A man shot his wife in their Krabi home before turning the gun on himself on July 27; their son discovered both bodies after returning from harvesting durian with gifts for his mother.

Son Discovers Parents Dead After Bringing Durian Home
27 Jul Khaosod

On July 27, Deputy Superintendent Adisorn Yeesan of Nueaklong Police Station in Krabi received a report of a fatal shooting inside a residential house in Pakasai subdistrict, Nueaklong district. Officers and forensic staff arrived at a single-story concrete home, where they found the body of Samphan, 49, lying face-up in a pool of blood near the front entrance with a gunshot wound to the left rib cage. In the kitchen area nearby, they discovered the body of Rattanaporn, 46, also face-up in blood, with a fatal gunshot wound beneath her left breast that exited through her back. A shotgun and spent cartridges were recovered near the rear door and seized as evidence.

The couple's son, who was staying at a relative's house, explained that his parents lived together while he had gone to help relatives harvest durian in a nearby village. Around midday, he returned home with durian to give to his mother, finding the front door slightly open. After calling out with no response, he entered and collapsed when he discovered both parents dead with signs of a struggle.

During questioning, the son revealed that his parents fought frequently because the father was extremely jealous and had often beaten his wife. Investigators believe the couple argued again before the husband shot his wife in the kitchen. He then discarded the spent cartridge outside near the rear door, returned inside, and killed himself with the same shotgun in the front hallway. Officials will conduct further investigation into the exact circumstances, and the bodies will undergo detailed examination before being released to family for religious rites.

On July 27, 2569, at Mueang Udon Thani Police Station, Provincial Police Commander Thawatchai Thungpao, Deputy Commander Phan Phet Khae Kamnoed Phet, Police Station Commander Phatthana Wongse Jhan Phon, and Mueang Udon Thani District Officer Chawish Pongkhan announced the arrest of 21 people aged 18-48, consisting of 14 men and 7 women. Police seized 10 MDMA pills, 3 grams of ketamine, 1 bottle of GHB, and 5 methamphetamine tablets from an unnumbered rental house on Don Udom Lane, Udon Thani Municipality. The arrests were made at 11:30 a.m. on July 26, 2569.

Investigation revealed that Wichyphon rented the house and possessed 1.5 MDMA pills and 1 methamphetamine tablet. Pimukkhaphan had 9 MDMA pills, 2 ketamine packets, 1 GHB bottle, and 3 methamphetamine tablets. Chaiphrueksa possessed MDMA pills, and Techini had 1 methamphetamine tablet. Police charged these four with possession of Type 1 stimulants (GHB), Type 2 stimulants (ketamine and methamphetamine), and Type 1 narcotics (MDMA). The remaining 17 suspects tested positive for drug use in urine samples and were charged with illegal consumption of Type 1 narcotics and Type 2 stimulants.

District Officer Chawish revealed that the office had received complaints about regular vehicle traffic at the rental house, suspecting illegal drug activities. Police conducted the raid as part of the government's "90-Day Drug Elimination Operation." After learning the house hosted regular drug parties, they planned and executed the arrest, finding 21 people using drugs inside.

Police Commander Phatthana reported that three days of surveillance showed night-life revelers inviting each other to the drug party after bars closed, spreading word of mouth without social media promotion. Most participants were regular drug users. On the morning of July 26, police used a search warrant to raid the house and found all 21 people enjoying the drug party inside.

Saraburi Motorcycle Taxi Stand Ordered to Remove Steel Canopy

Saraburi's city mayor ordered motorcycle taxi drivers to demolish an illegal steel canopy at their stand near the hospital after street vendors complained about encroachment on public road space.

Saraburi Motorcycle Taxi Stand Ordered to Remove Steel Canopy
27 Jul Khaosod

The Saraburi City Mayor has ordered motorcycle taxi drivers to demolish a steel canopy structure in front of Saraburi Hospital after resolving a dispute with street vendors. The vendors had complained about the encroachment onto public road space. The motorcycle taxi leader promised to comply and avoid causing inconvenience to the public.

On July 27, 2025, a clash broke out between street vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers on Municipal Road 4 in Pak Phraeo subdistrict, Saraburi city, after the drivers erected an iron fence around their parking area, blocking vendors from bringing their carts in to sell. The incident went viral on social media.

After an investigation by City Mayor Dr. Panupong Thiphayaset and District Officer Chinnaacharya Rosiakrashakdi, both sides agreed to resolve the matter. The taxi drivers agreed to remove the fence and partially dismantle the canopy to allow cart access, while vendors helped pay for labor. However, public pressure mounted to remove the permanent steel structure that encroached on the road, which is illegal.

Today, the mayor ordered the complete demolition of the steel canopy. When the reporter arrived at the scene, workers were already removing the structure while the motorcycle taxi drivers watched from a distance, having relocated their vehicles to the opposite side of the street. The taxi stand leader said they fully comply with the mayor's order to satisfy all parties, but asked for public sympathy. The motorcycle taxi stand will remain in place, though drivers will now rely on umbrellas for shelter as they continue their livelihood.

Thailand-China High-Speed Rail Phase 1 Nears 55% Completion

Thailand-China High-Speed Rail Phase 1 Nears 55% Completion
27 Jul Khaosod

The Ministry of Transport is advancing the Thailand-China high-speed railway project, expediting construction of phase 1 while preparing to open bidding for phase 2 to connect Thailand, Laos, and China and support regional trade, investment, and economic development.

On July 27, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn chaired the first 2026 meeting of the joint committee managing the Thailand-China railway cooperation project. Senior Transport Ministry officials and relevant agencies attended to track progress and accelerate the Bangkok-Nong Khai high-speed rail project in both phase 1 and phase 2 preparations, including linking railway systems across Thailand, Laos, and China into a seamless regional transport network to support future travel, trade, investment, and tourism.

The meeting focused on monitoring progress and resolving obstacles in the Thailand-China government cooperation agreement to develop a high-speed rail system connecting Bangkok, the Northeast, and Nong Khai province, a strategic area for border trade and regional connectivity.

Once completed, the project will improve travel efficiency between Bangkok and major regional cities, reduce distance and time constraints, and increase flexibility in moving people and economic activities. It will also disperse investment from central areas, stimulate development around stations, and create opportunities for business, tourism, and services along the route.

Phase 1, spanning Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima (250.77 kilometers with 6 stations) and budgeted at 179,412.21 million baht, comprises 14 civil contracts. Currently, 2 contracts are completed, 10 are under construction, and 2 are in procurement, bringing overall construction progress to 55.27 percent. Near-completion work includes the Muak Lek and Lam Takong tunnel section and the Lam Takong-Si Khiew and Kud Chik-Khok Khoat sections. Contracts for the Bang Sue-Don Mueang and Ban Pho-Phra Kaew sections are being expedited to enable signing and construction launch soon.

The Transport Ministry targets opening the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima segment in 2026. Once operational, the route will provide an alternative travel option between Bangkok and the Northeast while supporting economic activity expansion to provinces and cities along the corridor. Beyond transportation convenience, areas surrounding stations have potential to develop as commerce, services, residential, and tourism hubs, creating jobs, increasing income, and attracting new investment to the region.

Koh Samui Faces Severe Drought Crisis as Water Supplies Dwindle

Koh Samui Faces Severe Drought Crisis as Water Supplies Dwindle
27 Jul Khaosod

Koh Samui is experiencing a severe drought crisis affecting water supplies. Raw water sources for the island's waterworks have dried up, and the pipeline system from the mainland cannot meet demand. On July 27, the Provincial Waterworks Authority's Koh Samui branch announced that severe drought conditions caused by the El Niño phenomenon have exhausted local water sources, leaving only approximately 16,000 cubic meters per day available from the mainland pipeline system—far short of the island's average daily demand of 34,000 cubic meters. The authority is implementing water-rationing measures by dividing supply zones according to a set schedule and is urging all water users to conserve supplies and maintain reserves during rotating shutoffs. The Waterworks Authority will continue monitoring the situation closely and will announce when conditions return to normal.

Thailand Must Urgently Reform Elderly Welfare System

More than 74 percent of Thai elderly say the state welfare system is insufficient and unprepared for the country's aging society, urging the government to urgently reform services with better access to healthcare, home care, and simplified

Thailand Must Urgently Reform Elderly Welfare System
27 Jul Khaosod

A recent Suan Dusit Poll survey on elderly citizens and state welfare has revealed a troubling picture, with the majority of older Thais agreeing that the country is unprepared for an aging society. More than 74 percent believe state welfare is insufficient, and nearly 63 percent lack confidence that the welfare system can handle the growing elderly population. The survey signals an urgent call to government and relevant agencies to take action seriously, as Thailand has fully entered an aging society phase. If the welfare system remains outdated and fails to address the real-life needs of most elderly citizens, the resulting problems will have wide-ranging impacts on seniors, families, and the nation's long-term economic burden. Notably, elderly citizens are not merely demanding increased financial assistance; what they need most is convenient access to state services that accommodate age-related limitations—including local support staff, home-based services, targeted outreach, and simplified procedures. Many seniors lack genuine access to their own entitlements. The elderly also prioritize basic security essentials for living, including age-appropriate financial support, quality healthcare, and systematic long-term care, rather than ad-hoc emergency measures. Good welfare is not simply handing out money occasionally; it must build security across all life dimensions: health, income, housing, and care when dependent. An aging society is everyone's future concern, since all people will eventually grow old. Welfare investment is therefore not a budget burden but an investment in quality of life, reducing inequality, and strengthening social stability long-term. The government should use these survey findings as a guide to urgently reform the elderly welfare system to support the rapidly expanding aging population, designing welfare systems tailored to different elderly groups so all can access their rights equally, conveniently, and with dignity. The government must recognize that this should not be a temporary vote-catching policy followed by neglect, which would burden the country and citizens more than genuine and sustainable assistance.

Thailand Pushes to Export Red Cow Milk to Six Asian Markets

Thailand is targeting six Asian countries to expand exports of Red Cow milk, with Malaysia and Indonesia as priority markets for halal certification and growth opportunities.

Thailand Pushes to Export Red Cow Milk to Six Asian Markets
27 Jul Khaosod

Agriculture Minister Wachirapool Khaokhram chaired a meeting with Watchree Wanserirn, director of the Thai Dairy Promotion Organization, and senior officials to accelerate expansion into foreign markets. The meeting included consultants and working group members tasked with identifying new revenue streams and international competitiveness strategies.

The group discussed collaboration with agricultural attachés at Thai diplomatic missions in China and Indonesia to develop foreign market expansion plans. Currently, the Thai Dairy Promotion Organization relies primarily on neighboring Myanmar and Laos. The initiative targets six initial countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, and China, leveraging Thailand's 100% pure dairy products and geographic advantages.

Minister Wachirapool emphasized the need to generate revenue through pricing reforms, premium product launches, expanded marketing channels, and promotions to compete in open markets. The ministry will coordinate with agricultural attachés to negotiate trade terms, resolve regulatory barriers, and conduct market analysis on consumer demand, pricing, and key players in each target country. Plans include business matching between the Thai Dairy Promotion Organization and interested distributors, with Malaysia and Indonesia as priority markets for potential halal market expansion.

Thailand Eyes Massive Land Bridge Project Despite Environmental Concerns

Thailand's controversial one-trillion-baht Land Bridge project connecting the Gulf and Andaman coasts remains suspended despite PM backing, as environmental groups and officials cite poor economic viability and severe threats to marine ecos

Thailand Eyes Massive Land Bridge Project Despite Environmental Concerns
27 Jul Khaosod

The Land Bridge project remains highly disputed—some view it as wasteful, others as economically unviable. This massive transport infrastructure would connect the Gulf Coast in Chumphon with Ranong's Andaman shore, involving an estimated one-trillion-baht investment in major ports, expressways, railways, and large-scale logistics systems, plus special economic zones and supporting industries. If realized, the project could stimulate the economy, create jobs, and boost income. However, careful cost-benefit analysis is essential to determine true economic worth. A project of this scale inevitably brings environmental damage, leaving local residents fearful of impacts on their livelihoods and nature-dependent occupations. Major ports and industries would inevitably generate substantial waste. Environmental conservation groups and southern civil society networks have mounted broad opposition campaigns. Recently, Prime Minister Anuthon Charanweerakul reaffirmed the project is not permanently abandoned but could be revived whenever deemed necessary and geopolitically suitable. However, Deputy PM and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithamprasert, chairing the Land Bridge review, previously concluded the plan should be shelved due to poor returns, low feasibility, high budgetary risk, and serious threats to marine ecosystems, coastal livelihoods, food security, and forests. The committee ultimately determined the project has low commercial viability, carries significant environmental risk, and lacks social consensus. Although Anuthon says the plan remains open, no timeline or endpoint is clear. More pressing is an apparent lack of government mega-projects to drive transformative economic growth—Thailand has lacked major infrastructure initiatives for years, and current projects fall short of generating breakthrough economic stimulus.
