Father Retrieves Son's Items After School Shooting; Child Still Traumatized
8 Aug Khaosod

A father brought his middle-school son to Thepsirin Nonthaburi School on August 8, 2025, to collect the boy's iPad and learning materials, which the student had not retrieved during the shooting incident that occurred the previous day. A teacher escorted the parent and student inside to gather the items, a process that took approximately 15 minutes before they left the campus. The father revealed that his son had informed his mother about the shooting as it happened, while he learned of the incident through news reports. The child remains traumatized by the event and cannot sleep alone in his room, preferring to stay with his mother. When retrieving his belongings from the school building today, the boy still showed visible signs of distress, requiring his father's support to walk inside to collect his things.

Meanwhile, Charin, 45, a local resident with two sons aged 6 and 9, visited the school to lay flowers in tribute to those affected by the shooting. He revealed that he lives in a nearby soi and passes the school entrance daily, feeling a strong connection to the place despite his sons not attending there. Every morning, he watches students walking to school and often stops his car to let them cross safely. He expressed shock and sadness that such an incident could occur in Thailand, describing it as a major loss that has deeply shaken the community. Although he was at work when the shooting happened, he later learned of the tragedy and feels devastated by what occurred.

Regarding school safety measures, Charin believes all schools should already have security protocols in place, but suggested it may be time to review and strengthen measures beyond weapon detection. He emphasized the importance of monitoring and assessing the mental health and psychological state of teachers, students, and all school staff. He noted that the root cause of violence may not lie solely in weapons but in behavioral issues, emotional distress, or accumulated stress. Early detection of behavioral changes and mental health concerns could help prevent incidents and reduce the likelihood of future violent events on school grounds.

Thai Court Dismisses NBTC Chair's Bid to Overturn Disqualification

Thailand's Central Administrative Court dismissed NBTC Chair Dr. Sorn Bunyaichaiprueksa's lawsuit challenging his disqualification, ruling he lacks legal standing until a formal royal decree removes him from office.

Thai Court Dismisses NBTC Chair's Bid to Overturn Disqualification
8 Aug Khaosod

The Central Administrative Court has refused to accept a lawsuit filed by Dr. Sorn Bunyaichaiprueksa, NBTC chairman, challenging a July 21, 2025 committee ruling that found him ineligible for the position due to prohibited characteristics. Dr. Sorn filed the case on August 3, seeking to have the committee's decision rescinded retroactively from the date of the ruling. The court rejected the case on the grounds that the plaintiff is not yet a suffering party, as no royal decree has been formally issued to remove him from office. Under the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Act, individuals approved by the Senate must provide evidence of ceasing their prior profession before the Prime Minister requests a royal appointment; the disqualification determination came after Dr. Sorn's appointment on April 13, 2022. The court ruled that removal from office following such a determination requires a separate royal decree under section 20 of the law, and until that formal step occurs, the plaintiff has no legal standing to sue. Consequently, the court dismissed the case without further consideration.

Classmates Reveal Shooter Sought Thai Teacher Over Grade

A student opened fire at a school building on August 8, 2026, searching for a Thai language teacher who had given him a failing grade despite his previous good academic standing.

Classmates Reveal Shooter Sought Thai Teacher Over Grade
8 Aug Khaosod

Classmates are gradually providing police with information about the young person who opened fire at a school building. On August 8, 2026, reporters learned that the perpetrator was searching for a Thai language teacher who was not in class that day. The teacher had reportedly given the shooter a grade of 0 in Thai, despite the student having previously maintained good overall academic standing.

Authorities have also learned that the perpetrator's grandmother was a former teacher and may have been upset about the grade situation. Investigators are examining whether the grade dispute and teacher conflict were factors in the attack.

After the initial incident at Building 5, the perpetrator ran to the fourth floor of Building 4 to search for the Thai language teacher. Upon not finding him, the perpetrator showed signs of distress and fired three shots into the air before the fatal event occurred.

At 11:26 a.m., a classmate came forward to provide additional details. When reporters asked about "Teacher A" (a pseudonym), whom the perpetrator had been seeking, the student confirmed the teacher is real and teaches Thai language. The student was uncertain whether the teacher had taught the previous day.

Another male student who was present at the scene later came forward to investigators, confirming that the perpetrator had indeed been searching for Teacher A, a Thai language instructor. This student stated that the perpetrator had received a 0 in Thai language—the first time this had happened. Previously, while the perpetrator's Thai language grades had not been outstanding, he had never failed the subject. The student reported that the perpetrator had complained to friends, saying "I submitted all my assignments, but I don't understand why my grade still couldn't be corrected." Several classmates have continued to provide statements to investigators.

Chachoengsao Pub Raided, 40 Underage Patrons Arrested

Police raided a Chachoengsao pub early August 8 and arrested 40 underage patrons, also seizing drugs and finding the venue operating without a licence.

Chachoengsao Pub Raided, 40 Underage Patrons Arrested
8 Aug Khaosod

CHACHOENGSAO — On August 8, 2026, a special Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) team raided a popular pub in central Chachoengsao and found 40 underage patrons inside, following complaints that it was operating without a licence.

The operation was led by Deputy Interior Minister Phonphir Suwannachwee at around 1:30 am, with DOPA special operations officers, provincial officials, district officials and Chachoengsao police joining the raid at 90's Bar & Restaurant on Thepkhunakorn Road in Na Mueang subdistrict.

Offices found a large number of customers inside and separated men and women for screening. More than 40 customers were found to be under the age of 20, while officers also found crystal methamphetamine and ketamine allegedly discarded on the floor by customers attempting to hide the drugs. Urine tests found more than 30 people, both men and women, with substances in their systems.

Offices also inspected a concealed area on the second floor, where nearly 10 karaoke rooms were reportedly operating. Customers could allegedly continue drinking and using the rooms after leaving the pub downstairs.

Deputy Interior Minister Phonphir said the raid followed complaints received by Mueang Chachoengsao district officials about groups of young people allegedly gathering at the venue. An initial inspection found that the establishment did not have permission to operate.

The person claiming to own the venue was identified as a village headman in Khlong Preng subdistrict, Mueang Chachoengsao district. He allegedly told officials that several other people, including government officials, were also business partners.

Phonphir ordered local authorities to take legal action against all parties involved and prepare to shut down the establishment immediately.

Thai Police Vow Community Partnership to Prevent School Shootings

Thai police are calling for stronger community partnerships to prevent school shootings, shifting security responsibility from police alone to trained citizens who can identify threats and coordinate responses in their neighborhoods.

Thai Police Vow Community Partnership to Prevent School Shootings
8 Aug Khaosod

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Napdol Kannika, a national police policy committee member and lecturer in peace innovation at Siam Technology College, responded to the shooting at Thepsirin School in Nonthaburi, describing it as a deeply shocking event for Thai society. He stressed that schools should be the safest spaces for children and youth, yet when places meant for learning and hope become sources of fear, the question extends beyond "How will police respond?" to the larger question of "How do we prevent this from happening again?" Napdol argued that a fundamental shift in thinking is required—moving from viewing security as solely a police responsibility to seeing "police and citizens as safety partners." He noted that police cannot be everywhere, but community members already are present in their neighborhoods and know their areas best; with proper knowledge, coordination systems, and connections to police, they become critical forces for prevention. Since 2567 (2024), Napdol has been involved in risk management initiatives that include public participation in training programs for Soft Target protection—such as shopping centers, schools, hospitals, and entertainment venues—developed when Police Deputy Commander Kittiphad Phandthet held his position. The key concept was not to turn citizens into police officers, but to make them "threat-aware, able to report incidents, able to survive, and able to coordinate with police." Napdol emphasized that today public participation must be elevated to national policy level through the concept of "modern-era volunteer community police" and gun-control policies under Prime Minister Anuthim and driven forward by Deputy Commander Kittiphad, reflecting alignment between policy leaders and operational leaders in centering the public within the security system. The significance of this policy lies not merely in the term "volunteer community police," but in transforming the public's status from security service recipients to security partners.
