Thai Stock Market Poised For Further 10% Gains

Thailand's stock market could gain another 10% or more over the next year, driven by global economic strength, controlled inflation, increased foreign investment in manufacturing, and recovering corporate earnings, according to a top securi

Thai Stock Market Poised For Further 10% Gains
1h ago Khaosod

The chairman of the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations said the Thai stock market has rebounded strongly from 1,250 points to above 1,600 points earlier this year, but the uptrend is far from over, citing five factors that could drive another 10% or greater gains over the next 12 months.

Paiboon Nalinthrangkurn, chief executive of Tisco Securities and chairman of the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations, shared his positive outlook on Facebook, noting that the SET index has climbed nearly 30% since the start of the year and is now outperforming global and emerging markets.

The five supporting factors are: First, the global economy is stronger than expected. Despite geopolitical tensions and trade friction, the International Monetary Fund forecasts global growth of 3.0% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, with corporate profits continuing to grow worldwide, driven significantly by investment in the AI ecosystem.

Second, global inflation remains controlled. Although energy prices have risen due to Middle East tensions, inflationary pressure is not as severe as in 2022–2023, allowing major central banks to avoid aggressive interest rate hikes—a supportive environment for equities.

Third, Thailand stands to benefit from manufacturing relocation and global supply chain restructuring. Thailand's geographic position, political neutrality, and infrastructure give it a competitive edge in attracting foreign direct investment in emerging industries. Foreign direct investment in AI, data centers, semiconductors, and electric vehicles has increased significantly, with FDI promotion applications in the first half of 2025 nearly matching the entire 2024 total of 1.36 trillion baht. If this translates into sustained real investment, it will provide a new growth engine and lift Thailand's long-term economic potential.

Fourth, the Thai economy is laying the foundation for a new growth cycle. Though structural challenges remain—high household debt, an aging society, weak competitiveness, and low productivity—the government is taking action to address these issues and create new growth drivers, particularly in AI infrastructure, the digital economy, and future industries. The International Monetary Fund forecasts Thai GDP growth of 1.9% in 2026 and 2.2% in 2027. While not high, if sustained new investment materializes, the economy could return to 3% or higher growth sustainably.

Fifth, corporate earnings and market fundamentals are recovering. Bloomberg Consensus forecasts SET earnings per share will rise from 80.8 baht in 2024 to 106 baht in 2025 and 114 baht in 2026. The SET is trading at approximately 14.8 times forward price-to-earnings, or 12.6 times excluding Delta, which is not expensive compared to other regional markets. Additionally, 61% of Thai listed companies are still trading below book value, indicating that market recovery has not spread across all companies. Foreign investors are beginning to return as net buyers after selling Thai stocks for several years, suggesting that fund flows could return to the market.

Paiboon noted that in the long term, the Jump+ program and Corporate Value Up Program will help improve the quality and value of Thai listed companies. However, the market must still navigate volatility from geopolitical risks, trade wars, inflation, and U.S. interest rate direction. Domestic risks remain centered on politics; if investors lose confidence in government stability, it could shock the Thai stock market.

Heavy Rain Triggers Landslide, Knocks Out Power Across Phayao

A landslide triggered by heavy rain in Phayao's Pong district toppled power poles and knocked out electricity across multiple villages, with repair crews working to restore service.

Heavy Rain Triggers Landslide, Knocks Out Power Across Phayao
1h ago Khaosod

Heavy rainfall in Phayao province, especially in Pong district, has caused widespread damage from flash flooding and landslides, with a major soil slide at the boundary between Jun and Pong districts toppling high-voltage power poles and damaging electrical infrastructure across a broad area. The power outage extends from Ban Huai Khao Kam in Jun district to Ban Huai Khok Moo in Pong district, affecting many residents and homes. Following the incident, the Regional Electricity Authority's Jun district office mobilized staff and engineering teams to assess the damage and begin repairs to the high-voltage lines and distribution network, working to restore electricity to residents as soon as possible.

Authorities have warned residents in the affected areas to keep away from damaged power poles, downed lines, and electrical equipment due to the risk of live current and potential electrocution, and urged them to monitor official announcements from the Regional Electricity Authority. Repair crews are working at full capacity, and power will be restored quickly once systems are ready, with authorities apologizing for the inconvenience caused by this severe rainfall and landslide event.

Thailand Denies Invading Cambodia, Rejects Border Claims

Thailand Denies Invading Cambodia, Rejects Border Claims
1h ago Khaosod

On August 19, Air Vice Marshal Praphas Sonjaidee, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force and director of the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Information Centre, responded to claims made by a Hengfang Hotel owner who brought Chinese embassy officials to the area demanding Thailand return all property to Chinese investors in Cambodia. Sonjaidee said he wanted to clarify that investors, the Chinese government, and border facts are three separate issues that should not be conflated. While individuals have the right to petition their embassy for assistance, personal claims that Thailand has invaded or stolen property do not make those claims factual, he said.

Sonjaidee emphasized that current Thai military deployment follows a joint statement issued on December 27, 2024, requiring both sides to maintain their positions along an agreed troop deployment line without advancing. Thai forces are upholding this agreement, not engaging in invasion or territorial seizure as some have alleged. He stressed that border disputes must be resolved through bilateral mechanisms using documents, coordinates, and evidence—not through interviews, videos, or social media posts.

Property disputes must be separated from military deployment matters and resolved through proper legal channels and interstate processes, Sonjaidee added. He cautioned against assuming that Chinese diplomatic officials visiting the area means the Chinese government endorses the investor's allegations. Thailand values its relationship with China and believes China understands that disputes between countries must be resolved through facts and proper mechanisms, not accusations. "Investors have the right to make claims, but no one has the right to turn allegations into fact or change borders through social media," Sonjaidee said. "Thailand is not advancing, we are maintaining our positions under agreement, and we will not abandon our duty to protect Thai sovereignty," he concluded, adding that Thailand is ready to present factual evidence if false claims of invasion or theft are spread.

MP Raises Data Processing Concerns Over TH-AI Passport
1h ago Khaosod

On August 19, 2025, Chardchai Liaopairojaon, a Democratic Party list MP and deputy party leader, posted a video and statement on Facebook regarding the National Digital Economy and Society Committee's TH-AI Passport program, which opened early registration on de.aipass.net ahead of the official August 31 launch.

Chardchai said she reviewed the privacy policy and terms of service carefully and discovered critical language stating: "The platform cannot process commands and provide responses without sending data to the AI model you select. If you do not wish for your data to be processed this way, you cannot use the service." She highlighted that the Digital Economy Ministry has effectively acknowledged in its own documents that sending Thai citizen data overseas for processing is not optional but mandatory.

"This directly contradicts the Thailand digital roadmap section 2.2, which clearly requires the program to store and process data within Thailand with maximum protection under Thai personal data laws," Chardchai stated. "This is no longer just opposition concern—it is documented fact."

Chardchai outlined three priority demands: First, no further budget disbursement until clear and transparent clarification on the contradiction between the roadmap and actual operating conditions. Second, full disclosure of revised contract details, particularly regarding the pay-per-use payment model. Third, registration numbers must not be used as a value metric, as she predicted the ministry may use these figures to claim legitimacy while citizens may only have registered without actually using the service or developing intended skills.

Chardchai emphasized the greatest risk is that early registrations could be counted as active users to justify immediate per-head payments despite no actual service use or skill development occurring. She vowed not to stop scrutiny simply because of impressive registration numbers, stating that the legislative branch's duty is to protect national interest and every baht of taxpayer money.

Thailand formally opened the Asia Pacific Network of Science and Technology Centres Conference 2026 (ASPAC Conference 2026) on August 19, 2026, hosted by the National Science Museum under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. The four-day conference runs through August 22, 2026, at the IMPACT Exhibition Center in Muang Thong Thani, alongside the National Science and Technology Festival. Deputy Minister Supachai Pathumnakul presided over the opening ceremony, joined by NSM Acting Director Suwrong Wongsiree, National Research Council Deputy Director Sirinporn Diewtrakoorn, and international science centre representatives.

Deputy Minister Pathumnakul outlined the ministry's policy to strengthen Thailand's competitive capacity while promoting lifelong learning. He explained that hosting ASPAC 2026 alongside the science festival demonstrates Thailand's strategic readiness to serve as an international hub for science learning resources. The conference theme, "Museums Empowering Futures: Science Engagement in the Age of Uncertainty," emphasizes that modern museums must become proactive spaces connecting science to society and preparing citizens and young people for an uncertain future.

Acting NSM Director Wongsiree noted that Thailand has been honoured to host this international conference, which brings together museum leaders and practitioners to exchange experiences, showcase modern science communication innovations, and build future collaborations. National Research Council Deputy Director Diewtrakoorn highlighted the importance of science communication and public engagement in times of change, describing science museums as bridges linking cutting-edge research to the public and helping develop scientific literacy across the Asia-Pacific region.

How much money do you need to enter Thailand? Proof-of-funds rules explainedLegacy

Travellers arriving in Thailand may be asked to show that they have enough money to support their stay. Depending on how you enter the country, the requirement can be 10,000 or 20,000 baht per person, while visa-exempt travellers should check the rules applying to their nationality before flying. You have your passport, hotel booking and return flight sorted. But could immigration also ask to see your money? Yes. Thai immigration officers may ask foreign visitors to provide proof of sufficient funds when they arrive. The requirement is not a new rule introduced in 2026. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) issued a reminder in July 2026 explaining that proof-of-funds requirements have formed part of Thailand’s immigration rules since 1980, with the current financial thresholds introduced under a Ministry of Interior announcement in 2000. The amount you may need to show depends on how you are entering Thailand.

Entry category Per person Per family

Visa on Arrival (VOA) 10,000 baht 20,000 baht

Tourist Visa 20,000 baht 40,000 baht

Non-Immigrant Visa 20,000 baht 40,000 baht

Transit Visa and certain visa-exempt cases 10,000 baht 20,000 baht

These are the amounts listed by TAT in its July 2026 entry reminder. The requirement does not apply to children under 12. How much money do visa-exempt travellers need? Photo by Mazzzeltov from Getty Images This is where much of the confusion online comes from. TAT’s 2026 guidance lists 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family for certain visa-exempt cases under immigration regulations. However, it does not say that this amount applies universally to every traveller entering Thailand without a visa. TAT specifically advises visa-exempt travellers to check the latest requirements for their nationality and entry category, as published requirements can vary. At the same time, several Royal Thai embassies publish a higher figure for travellers using the Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme. The Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, DC, states that travellers using the scheme must have adequate cash or the equivalent of 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family. The same 20,000 to 40,000 baht requirement appears in guidance from other Royal Thai embassies. Travellers should not assume that every visa-exempt entry carries only a 10,000-baht requirement. If you are travelling under the Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme and the guidance for your nationality is unclear, being prepared to show 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family is the more cautious approach. Check the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General responsible for your country before departure, particularly as Thailand’s visa-exemption rules and eligible nationalities can change. Tourist Visa: 20,000 baht per person Travellers holding a Tourist Visa should be prepared to demonstrate financial means of at least 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family. This amount is confirmed by TAT and Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance on Tourist Visas. Do not confuse the amount required for entry screening with the financial documents you may have been required to submit when applying for your visa. Individual Thai embassies and consulates can require bank statements, proof of income or other financial documentation as part of the visa application process, and those requirements can differ by location and visa type. Once you arrive in Thailand, immigration officers still retain authority to conduct entry screening. Visa on Arrival: 10,000 baht per person The requirement is lower for travellers entering through Visa on Arrival. VOA applicants should have proof of funds of at least 10,000 baht per person, or 20,000 baht per family. TAT’s 2026 guidance confirms these figures, as do current Visa on Arrival instructions published by Royal Thai embassies. Visa on Arrival should not be confused with visa exemption. With visa exemption, eligible passport holders enter Thailand without applying for a visa at the airport. VOA is a separate immigration category available to nationals of specified countries who apply for the visa at an eligible Thai entry checkpoint. The financial requirements therefore do not necessarily match. Does proof of funds have to be in Thai baht? Photo by alexkich from Getty Images Not necessarily. TAT says travellers may be asked to show funds in Thai baht, an equivalent amount in another currency, or documents showing evidence of the equivalent funds. The evidence should be readily accessible in case an immigration officer asks to see it during entry screening. This means you do not need to exchange your entire proof-of-funds amount into Thai baht before travelling. However, official guidance does not clearly state that simply showing a credit card or debit card will always satisfy an immigration officer. If you plan to rely on financial documents rather than cash, keep them easy to access rather than packed in checked luggage or stored somewhere you cannot reach at immigration. Will every traveller be asked to show proof of funds? No official guidance says that every arriving tourist will automatically be asked to display their money. TAT says visitors may be asked to provide evidence of sufficient funds during immigration screening. In practice, travellers should be prepared even if they have entered Thailand before without being asked. Having received a Thai visa also does not guarantee admission. A visa allows a traveller to present themselves for entry under that visa category, but the final decision to admit a foreign national remains with the immigration officer at the checkpoint. If an officer requests proof of funds and the traveller cannot provide it, that can become part of the officer’s assessment of whether the person meets Thailand’s entry requirements. What else can immigration ask for? Proof of funds is only one part of Thailand’s arrival requirements. Depending on your nationality and entry category, you may also need to be prepared to provide a valid passport or travel document, evidence that you qualify for a visa or visa exemption, details of accommodation in Thailand, proof of onward or return travel where required, and your Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). The TDAC is separate from a visa and from the proof-of-funds requirement. Photo from Go To Thailand blog site How much should you prepare? For most tourists, the simplest way to remember the rule is: Tourist Visa: 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family. Visa on Arrival: 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family. Visa Exemption: Check the rules applying to your passport and entry category. While TAT lists 10,000 to 20,000 baht for certain visa-exempt cases, several Royal Thai embassies specify 20,000 to 40,000 baht for the Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme. If you cannot confirm which threshold applies, preparing evidence equivalent to 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family reduces the risk of arriving short. Most importantly, check the latest information about proof-of-funds and entry into Thailand from the Thai Immigration Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General responsible for your location shortly before travelling. Thailand’s immigration rules can change, and the entry category written on someone else’s travel forum may not be the same one that applies to you.

Mystery Man Confronts Monastery Staff Over Siege Video
1h ago Khaosod

A mysterious man on a gray-black Honda Wave motorcycle with an unknown license plate and a food delivery bag arrived at Pa Adulya Ram Monastery late at night on August 19. CCTV captured him entering through the Kalppaphruek Road gate and parking near the abbot's quarters. The short-haired man, wearing a short-sleeved shirt and three-quarter-length pants, was confronted by a resident monk who asked him why he had come. He responded aggressively, asking the monk if he was the one who filmed videos during the monastery siege, then claimed he himself had done the filming. The monk became alarmed when the man walked back to his motorcycle and began reaching into the food delivery bag, fearing a potential attack. He retreated to his quarters to prepare a weapon for self-defense, then witnessed the man hastily drive away through the rear gate around 10:30 p.m. The man appeared to be intoxicated. The monk later called the 191 emergency line, and Khon Kaen City Police arrived at the scene. This incident has raised concerns that the ongoing dispute over land ownership claims involving the monastery's heirs will not be resolved easily, as this confrontation appears to be an intentional provocation. Since the incident, a red donation box has been installed, and police have increased security patrols at the monastery, though visitors have been few due to the recent rain.

Reserve Senators Push DSI to Probe Vote-Buying Case in Parallel with Election Commission

Reserve senators pressed the Special Investigation Department to pursue vote-buying charges in parallel with the Election Commission's inquiry, rather than waiting for the electoral body to complete its investigation first.

Reserve Senators Push DSI to Probe Vote-Buying Case in Parallel with Election Commission
1h ago Khaosod

On August 19, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Special Investigation Department headquarters on Chaeng Watthana Road, Police Major General Kamrop Pannyakaew and a group of reserve senators, along with senate candidates, arrived to press for expedited processing of the vote-buying case to prosecutors. Police Colonel Voranan Srilum, director of the Consumer Protection Division and spokesman for the department, received their petition.

Kamrop revealed he came to follow up on the department's progress after learning that investigators had completed and filed charges against eight people linked to the vote-buying scheme. However, prosecutors returned the case for further investigation, and Justice Minister Ruthapon Naorat has repeatedly stated that the Special Investigation Department must wait for the Election Commission's inquiry panel to finish before proceeding—a position Kamrop and his group view as unnecessary, arguing the two investigations can proceed in parallel.

Police Colonel Voranan confirmed that investigators have been pressing forward throughout. The prosecutors' request for additional witness questioning has been completed. The case cannot proceed to prosecutors until the Election Commission's findings arrive to be attached to the file.

Today, the reserve senators' group also requested that investigators look into additional points to ensure fairness. The department will instruct officials to verify the facts involved. There is currently no set timeline, but if the Election Commission's findings arrive as expected by late August 2025, the investigators will compile all available evidence with those findings and submit the complete file to prosecutors for further action.

Thailand, Australia Deepen Strategic Partnership
1h ago Khaosod

Thailand and Australia agreed to deepen their strategic partnership, with a focus on tackling transnational crime, expanding economic ties and strengthening cooperation in science and innovation, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Wednesday.

Anutin and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held bilateral talks and a joint press conference at Parliament House in Canberra on 19 August, during Anutin's first official visit to Australia by a Thai prime minister in 14 years.

The visit comes ahead of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Australia next year.

The two countries upgraded their ties to a Strategic Partnership in 2020. Their latest talks covered four main areas: politics and security; economic, trade and innovation cooperation; culture and people-to-people ties; and regional and multilateral cooperation.

On security, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation against traditional and emerging threats, particularly transnational crime, including online scams, human trafficking, drug trafficking and money laundering.

The two governments welcomed a Joint Statement on Transnational Crime, aimed at strengthening efforts to prevent and combat cross-border crime at bilateral, regional and global levels.

The leaders also welcomed a Leaders' Statement on Deepening Economic Engagement, which seeks to make greater use of the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement, expand bilateral trade and investment in key sectors, and support a rules-based multilateral trading system.

Thailand and Australia also welcomed a Letter of Intent between Thailand's National Science and Technology Development Agency and Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation to expand cooperation in science, research and innovation.

On defence, Anutin welcomed an Australian proposal to establish a biennial Thailand-Australia Defence Ministers' Meeting to strengthen defence cooperation and support peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The two countries' defence ministries will coordinate to establish the mechanism as soon as possible.

Anutin also highlighted the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties through education, innovation and skills development. He praised the contribution of the Thai community to Australian society and noted Thailand's continued popularity as a destination for Australian tourists.

At the regional level, Thailand and Australia will work more closely through ASEAN, the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy, the Mekong-Australia Partnership and other relevant frameworks.

Anutin also thanked Australia for its continued support for Thailand's bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Albanese expressed Australia's readiness to deepen cooperation with Thailand across a range of areas, particularly the fight against transnational crime and economic cooperation.
