On September 3rd, Chanok Chantathong, Deputy Minister for Social Development and Human Security, visited Chao Prom Market in Ayutthaya province to meet a 79-year-old elderly woman who has gained attention on social media for folding and selling lotus flowers to support herself. The visit was accompanied by officials from the Department of Elderly Affairs, the Ayutthaya and Ang Thong provincial offices, and staff from the Vasanaveśn Center for Elderly Welfare Development.
During the visit, officials spoke with the elderly woman about her living situation and her needs regarding rights and welfare benefits. They provided her with daily necessities as encouragement and discussed appropriate service delivery and welfare support that could meet her needs. The team plans to coordinate with local volunteers and elderly protection advocates to monitor and improve her quality of life.
However, the elderly woman declined government assistance or donations, stating she is still able to work and earn enough to support herself. Instead, she requested that the public help by purchasing the lotus flowers she brings to sell.
Deputy Minister Chanok said the visit reflects the Ministry's proactive approach to listening to elderly people's needs and coordinating local cooperation to ensure they have access to appropriate rights, welfare, and protection while respecting their dignity and autonomy.
