Phrarachirayan Wipassi, also known as former Abbot Atichote of Phuttai Suvarn Temple in Ayutthaya Province, was arrested on charges of money laundering and misconduct. Complainants submitted video evidence and testimony alleging inappropriate behavior with a woman inside his quarters. On September 10, 2569, at 12:30 p.m., the National Office of Buddhism reported that Atichote Thammavaro had donned white clothing and formally renounced his monkhood, returning to lay status.
During the process, the former abbot admitted to his wrongdoing and willingly disrobed, displaying visible tension and concern. He told senior monks he was "worried about Buddhism." Under monastic law, he is considered to have ceased being a monk from the moment of his misconduct, which may constitute a serious breach of monastic discipline. Authorities will proceed with legal action on the related charges.
