Immigration police under Provincial Police Region 3 commander Major General Songpruet Sirisuk conducted a raid on August 21, 2024, at a Chinese-owned construction company in Mab Kha subdistrict, Nikhom Phatthana district, Rayong province, after intelligence indicated foreign workers were employed at the site. Officers inspected travel documents and work permits, discovering five foreign nationals in violation of Thai law.

The arrested workers comprised two Chinese nationals and three Myanmar nationals, charged under two categories of violations. Three workers—one Chinese and two Myanmar nationals—were charged with illegally entering and remaining in Thailand without authorization and working without a valid work permit or outside the scope of their authorization. The remaining two workers—one Chinese and one Myanmar national—were charged solely with unauthorized employment or working beyond their permitted scope.

All five were informed of the charges and transferred to Nikhom Phatthana police station in Rayong for legal proceedings. Major General Songpruet emphasized that the operation is part of an ongoing crackdown on foreign nationals who illegally enter, remain, or work in Thailand without proper authorization. Officials are expanding the investigation to identify employers and other parties involved in hiring unauthorized workers, with the aim of prosecuting them for hiring or harboring illegal workers and permitting employment outside authorized terms. Authorities are also preparing to revoke the residency permission of all five workers.

The Sirivannavari brand has unveiled the official ceremonial uniforms for Thai athletes at the 20th Asian Games 2026, scheduled for September 19 to October 4, 2026 in Nagoya, Japan. Under the concept "The Art of Unity," the designs highlight Thai identity through contemporary fashion while celebrating the traditional indigo-dyed cotton weaving craftsmanship of Don Koy village and textile heritage promoted by the Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture and Handicrafts. The uniforms represent over 900 Thai athletes and staff who will represent the country at the continental competition.

The launch event, held at the Fairmont Sukhumvit 20 hotel in Bangkok on August 21, featured Thai athletes including badminton player Peeraphan Korthong, taekwondo athlete Balanuk Thapthimdaeng, volleyball player Pimpichaya Korkram, and table tennis player Suthasinee Sawatrabut, alongside legendary taekwondo champion Panipak Wongpattanakit. The ceremonial uniforms were designed by Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, creative director of the Sirivannavari brand, who sought to blend Thai craftsmanship values with modern design aesthetics.

Ratirote Julchat, executive vice president of Sirivannavari, stated that the uniforms represent an opportunity to showcase Thai fashion and identity to the world through the Thai athletic delegation on Asia's stage. The brand deliberately selected hand-woven indigo-dyed cotton from Don Koy village in Sakon Nakhon province and textiles from the Queen Sirikit Institute to underscore the dedication, refinement, and patience inherent in Thai handicrafts—qualities that mirror the discipline and determination required of competitive athletes.

Khon Kaen school shuts after ‘mass shooting’ threatLegacyA school in Khon Kaen has moved classes online for a day after someone reportedly posted the words “mass shooting” in a LINE group used for student activities, prompting a heavy police presence around the campus today. Kalayanawat School announced the change on Wednesday night, saying it needed time to verify the information and assess the situation before students returned to campus. The post appeared in the school’s student activity group, which has 562 members, according to reports. The school said in a notice, signed by Director Apichat Un-koet, that students would study from home on Friday, August 21, following their normal timetables through teachers’ usual online channels. Teaching and administrative staff were still required to report to the school as usual, with teachers delivering lessons online from campus. Police Colonel Yodsawat Kaewsuebthanyanit, superintendent of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, said he ordered crime prevention and investigation officers, along with traffic police, to secure the area around the school from early Friday morning. Officers tightened checks at entrances and exits and monitored for suspicious people or vehicles, working in real time with school administrators and teachers to assess the situation. According to information obtained by reporters, the school, located about 300 metres from Muang Khon Kaen Police Station, took the decision after students got into an argument in the Line group the previous day. One student reportedly used the words “mass shooting” during the exchange before leaving the group, though no specific target was named. The school then contacted Muang Khon Kaen Police Station and adjusted its teaching plan while the matter was investigated. Yodsawat said police believed they had identified a person of interest but had not yet confirmed the poster’s identity. He said officers were treating the case with caution given the potential for copycat behaviour, and noted that spreading false information likely to cause public alarm falls under Section 384 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of one month in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both. The school said it was working with relevant agencies to verify the information and asked parents to closely supervise their children during the online learning day. Related news:

Po Tek Tung Foundation Distributes 3,000 Aid Packages in Annual Ceremony

In a historic first for over a century, the Po Tek Tung Foundation held its 2569 annual Tipping the Lanterns ceremony at the White Jade Thai Hong Shrine, a sacred Buddhist site on grounds dating back 120 years (Don Temple Cemetery), to distribute 3,000 packages of essentials to the poor across six Bangkok districts.

On August 21, 2569, the Po Tek Tung Foundation, led by Vice Chairman Wichit Chinvongwrrakul and Secretary Sirikul Obbhasvongse along with board members and assistants, held a ceremony to launch a convoy of 3,000 aid packages. The packages contained rice, instant noodles, canned fish, fish sauce, cooking oil, snacks, and donated clothing from the White Jade Thai Hong Shrine, commemorating the 72nd anniversary, in Sathorn District. These items were distributed to the poor in six Bangkok districts: Sathorn, Talad Noi, Thawi Watthana, Nong Chok, Minburi, and Rat Burana.

Bangkok Governor Associate Professor Dr. Chadchart Sittipunt presided over the ceremony, joined by dignitaries including Dr. Saowanee Tetchapaiboon, wife of the foundation's chairman, and foundation volunteers led by honorary volunteers Siriporn Obbhasvongse and Sirikul Obbhasvongse, specialist volunteer Narit Withayavrakorn, and artists Duangtaa Tungkamani and Chalermpon Tikhumporttheeravongse.

The previous day, August 20, 2569, the foundation board, including Chairman Wichien Tetchapaiboon, Vice Chairman Suthat Tetchaviboon, and Vice Chairman Sak Korsamrenrueng, along with other officials, held a candle-lighting ceremony to officially open the Tipping the Lanterns event. Chinese Buddhist monks from Bodhi Man Khunarama Temple conducted merit-making ceremonies, including rituals for the earth spirits, Tai Sifu deities, cemetery veneration, merit offerings to hungry spirits, and water dedication of merits.

The 2569 edition marked a historic year as devotees venerated one of Thailand's largest White Jade Thai Hong statues and participated in the Tipping the Lanterns tradition to dedicate merit to nameless spirits at the shrine, a 120-year-old public cemetery managed by the Po Tek Tung Foundation. The foundation resolved to increase the number of aid packages this year beyond previous years to meet rising demand and living costs, reducing household expenses for the poor and expanding distribution to both Bangkok and other provinces. On August 16, 2569, the foundation had already distributed essentials at its cemetery grounds.

BAM First-Half Earnings Rebound, Collections Hit 6.5 Billion Baht

Bangkok Asset Management's first-half collections reached 6.5 billion baht with second-quarter profit up 8%, as the company diversifies income through debt restructuring programs, property sales, and joint-venture partnerships.

BAM First-Half Earnings Rebound, Collections Hit 6.5 Billion Baht
1d ago Khaosod

Bangkok Asset Management reported second-quarter collections of 3.513 billion baht, up 16% from the first quarter's 3.026 billion baht, bringing first-half total collections to 6.539 billion baht. Second-quarter profit reached 234 million baht, up 8% from the first quarter's 217 million baht, for a first-half total profit of 451 million baht. Lakshya Vorkitpokatat, chief executive of Bangkok Asset Management, said the company is building a resilient business model that does not depend on large single collections but focuses on continuous cash flow from routine operations through the TDR Factory, proactive NPA management, selective debt purchases, and joint-venture AMCs. BAM is prioritizing financial rehabilitation of small debtors over collection pressure, operating the "Fresh Start with BAM" program that offers debt restructuring tailored to borrowers' repayment capacity. The program has so far approved 149 million baht in relief. The company has expanded cooperation with government and state enterprises through the "Public Assets Plus" initiative, which makes housing affordable for vulnerable groups, resulting in 1,775 property sales. BAM is also pursuing business partnerships that select NPA assets—single houses, commercial buildings, condominiums, and land—to present to real estate developers who can enhance value and transform idle property into productive assets. In the second quarter, BAM received 30 million baht in dividends and recognized 28 million baht in profit share from joint-venture AMCs, an asset-light growth mechanism that allows the company to manage assets without holding the full portfolio while generating returns through profit shares and dividends. For the second half of 2025, Vorkitpokatat said BAM will accelerate all three income engines—NPL, NPA, and joint-venture AMC—simultaneously to increase collections, diversify cash flow, and improve profit quality.

Bass Dechapol Puavaranukroh, a Thai national badminton player, has withdrawn from the 2026 World Badminton Championships mixed doubles quarterfinal against France's Delrue Delfine-Thom Jickel due to a knee injury from the previous round.

Bass Dechapol and Feme Supisara Paewsamphran had just defeated Japan's Yuichi Shimonagami-Sayaka Hobara in the round of 16 at the World Badminton Championships in India, but the Thai mixed doubles team's campaign has ended as Bass cannot compete in the next round due to injury.

Meanwhile, in the women's singles, Pornpawee Chochuwong advances to the semifinals without playing after her opponent, Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, withdrew. Police have revealed the circumstances behind a tragedy in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province, where a man fatally shot his wife, a deputy tambon administrator, before taking his own life. The bodies of 44-year-old Sudjai, deputy chief of the tambon administration organization in Phetchabun province, and her 47-year-old husband Yongyut were discovered in the early morning hours of August 21 inside their residence in Lom Sak district. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

According to investigations disclosed on August 21, 2569, Pol. Lt. Col. Pasunt Sangtong, commander of Ban Klang Police Station in Lom Sak district, revealed that detailed examination showed Sudjai was shot in the face with a 9 mm firearm, while Yongyut suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. One firearm, nine bullet casings, and one bullet were found at the scene, believed to be the weapon Yongyut used to shoot Sudjai before using the same gun to end his own life.

Pol. Lt. Col. Pasunt stated that investigations showed the couple had argued before the incident due to jealousy. Chat messages found on both victims' phones revealed a pattern of suspicion and jealousy that had caused ongoing disputes between them. On the night of the incident, a severe quarrel apparently erupted over the same issue, causing Yongyut to lose control of his emotions. He then opened fire on Sudjai, killing her, and subsequently took his own life to escape responsibility. Family members remain unsatisfied with the official cause of death. Autopsies have been completed, and the bodies will be handed over to relatives for religious funeral rites.

Budget Panel Approves Billion-Baht Boost for Nine Agencies

Thailand's House budget committee approved redirecting 11.162 billion baht to nine agencies including the emergency reserve fund and national parks department during an August 21 session, while rejecting a proposal to boost student loan fun

Budget Panel Approves Billion-Baht Boost for Nine Agencies
1d ago Khaosod

The budget committee of the House of Representatives held an extraordinary session on August 21 to review proposed budget amendments for fiscal year 2570, chaired by Deputy Minister Phrader Parisnananthakul. The committee considered 38.57 billion baht in requested budget adjustments from the cabinet approved on August 18, split into two main agendas: approval of increases and modifications from 65 budgetary units totaling 37.584 billion baht, and consideration of proposals from ten independent state agencies totaling 988 million baht.

Committee member Nanthana Songpraja proposed redirecting 11.162 billion baht that had been cut, distributing it among nine agencies including the central emergency reserve fund (6.044 billion baht), the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (148 million baht), and the Office of Vocational Education Commission (96 million baht).

Meanwhile, committee member Sirikanya Tansukul from the Pheu Thai Party proposed increasing funding for the Science, Research and Innovation Fund by 6 billion baht and the Student Loan Fund (YFPO) by 5.162 billion baht. She noted that with 706,000 current borrowers and only 9 billion baht allocated for fiscal 2570, the funding is insufficient to serve existing and new applicants, risking tens of thousands of students dropping out of the system. The fund collected only 27,000 million baht in fiscal 2568, falling short of the 33,000 million baht target for 2570.

The committee majority supported Nanthana's amendment and opposed Sirikanya's proposal to increase YFPO funding. Committee member Krueang Parisnananthakul noted that while YFPO will receive nearly 9 billion baht in 2570, the core problem remains the fund's 200 billion baht debt arrears, which blocks new funding from entering the system.

Satellite data shows over 3,900 square kilometers across northern Thailand facing major flood risk, with Sukhothai and Phitsanulok provinces most severely affected by interconnected high-risk zones.

Satellite Data Shows Major Flood Risk Across 3,900 Sq Km in North Thailand
1d ago Khaosod

Bangkok — The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported data from its Check Nam application, which analyzes satellite imagery and geospatial information to monitor flood risks. The latest analysis showed a large, interconnected area classified as a very high-risk zone covering floodplain areas in Sukhothai, Phitsanulok and neighboring provinces, with the total area currently at risk of flooding exceeding 3,900 square kilometers.

Sukhothai has been widely affected, with large areas classified as high risk concentrated across the central and lower parts of the province, particularly in Sawankhalok, Si Samrong, Mueang Sukhothai and Kong Krailat districts, as well as parts of Si Satchanalai district in the north. In Phitsanulok, extensive high-risk areas were detected in the central and western parts of the province, with floodwater connected to the flow from Sukhothai affecting major areas including Phrom Phiram, Bang Rakam and Mueang Phitsanulok districts, as well as parts of Wat Bot district.

Nearby areas and neighboring provinces including Uttaradit, Phichit and Kamphaeng Phet have also recorded both very high-risk and low-risk zones. GISTDA said the assessment was based on high-accuracy satellite imagery updated in real time, allowing authorities to assess the direction and expansion of floodwater accurately and helping relevant agencies and residents plan monitoring and response measures more effectively. GISTDA advised residents in affected and nearby areas to closely monitor the situation around the clock.

Lawmakers Push 600 Million Baht Fund for Ex-Parliamentarians in Need

Lawmakers called for a 600 million baht annual fund to support struggling former parliamentarians and senators, citing cases of ex-officials facing eviction and medical debt while unable to work due to post-service restrictions.

Lawmakers Push 600 Million Baht Fund for Ex-Parliamentarians in Need
1d ago Khaosod

During a Budget Committee meeting on August 21, 2025, at Parliament, committee member Wanmuhammadnor Matha raised concerns about the pension fund for former parliamentarians and senators, which has faced cuts despite being established by law. He recounted receiving calls from a now-deceased former representative who needed 5,000 baht for hospital bills but had no money, as creditors had seized any funds in his personal account. Wanmuhammadnor also described cases of former lawmakers evicted from rental homes for inability to pay rent, refusing to rely on their children for support due to pride.

"Former parliamentarians are not all wealthy," Wanmuhammadnor said, citing data showing 1,800 former members requesting assistance annually, with the fund requiring 600-700 million baht yearly. He noted the fund has received only 200 million baht and has faced a 300 million baht shortfall. He argued that other countries like Cambodia and Laos still provide welfare for former parliamentarians and urged recognition of their dignity and honor.

Parliament Vice President Phradet Phasinananthakul acknowledged the concern as an important observation for discussion with relevant agencies. Committee member Chada Thaiserit from Uthai Thani, representing the Phumi Chai Thai party, echoed support, saying many former lawmakers struggle financially due to restrictions on their income, including prohibitions on stock ownership. He criticized the notion that former parliamentarians should not receive assistance, arguing that society should show compassion for those who once served in difficult circumstances.
