The Internal Trade Department is accelerating discussions on measures to help rice farmers reduce costs and boost production efficiency in practical, situation-appropriate ways, while maintaining rice price stabilization efforts. Witthayakorn Manirat, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, reported that the National Rice Policy and Management Committee's production subcommittee is consulting on additional farmer support covering management assistance, cost reduction, and production efficiency improvements. The proposed measures will align with policies already approved to ensure targeted help that fits the current situation and can be implemented effectively, with conclusions expected soon.

Previously, on June 11, 2025, the committee approved five measures including a rough rice sales deferral credit programme targeting 3 million tonnes, an agricultural institution rice consolidation credit programme for 1.5 million tonnes, interest compensation for mill operators storing 4 million tonnes of rough rice over 2–6 months, a rough rice absorption programme through the State Warehousing Organization purchasing at 300 baht per tonne for 3 million tonnes, and a second phase premium rice programme supporting 266 farmer groups with 300,000 baht per group for machinery and equipment. Total approved funding reaches 12.04 billion baht.

The director-general stated these five programmes will serve as key mechanisms to absorb output, defer rice sales during peak harvest, improve liquidity for agricultural institutions and operators, and raise production efficiency—all supporting rice price stability and farmer incomes. Supplementary assistance measures under consideration will align with existing programmes and address cost reduction and efficiency improvements.

Opposition Plans Rallies as Election Panel Eyes Senate Fraud Dismissal

Opposition parties plan rallies August 29-30 ahead of an Election Commission vote on August 31 regarding alleged senate fraud, as they push for constitutional amendments to strengthen checks and balances.

Opposition Plans Rallies as Election Panel Eyes Senate Fraud Dismissal
3d ago Khaosod

On August 15, the Office of the House Speaker hosted an opposition leadership forum on political institution reform and checks and balances at the Krungsri River Hotel in Ayutthaya. Opposition leader Nattapong Ruengpanyavuthit opened the event, joined by Virayut Kanjachu, Satit Wongnongtoe, Police Major General Tawi Sotsong, and Sudarat Keyuraphan in a panel discussing institutional flaws and the senate fraud case.

Prasit Watthasin, closing the forum, predicted the Election Commission will vote on Monday, August 31, with the opposition planning activities on August 29-30 in counter-messaging before that decision. He warned the commission may dismiss the case after allowing the impeachment process to unfold.

Prasit noted the forum was held at the Krungsri River Hotel because it was allegedly used as a vote-buying center in the Nakhon Phanom and Sukhothai senate elections, and cited similar operations at other hotels and factories across the country where senate and House candidates had gathered voters.

Prasit said the public is watching what the Election Commission will decide on the fraud case. He stressed the law is clear: if credible evidence of wrongdoing exists, the commission can forward the matter to the Supreme Court. He and the Pheu Thai Party plan to use parliamentary mechanisms to push through constitutional amendments, including proposals already submitted to the House Speaker, to dismantle immunity protections wholesale and introduce mechanisms allowing the public to recall politicians and independent officials through parliament.

Prasit added that Pheu Thai has also submitted proposals to amend the constitution to strip the House Speaker's discretion in forwarding matters to the Supreme Court, and to establish an independent committee to investigate the National Anti-Corruption Commission's conduct—a matter that has stalled for over two months with no clarity from Speaker Sophon Saram on whether to proceed. Late this month, when parliament reconvenes, amendments to the Senate Electoral Law will be introduced to allow citizens to file complaints directly with courts without going through the Election Commission.

At 9:25 a.m. on August 15, 2025, at Makkasan Police Station, investigators brought seven youths accused of assaulting a Japanese tourist in a derelict area near Makkasan Airport Rail Link station to file detention requests with the Juvenile and Family Court on charges of nighttime robbery. After questioning was completed the previous day, police released the youths to return home and summoned them to the police station in the morning to be taken together for detention proceedings. Parents and guardians brought the youths to the station before heading to the juvenile court to prepare bail applications.

Police Captain Urampol Khundechsamrit, commander of Makkasan Police Station, revealed that during questioning with a multidisciplinary team, the youths confessed to the incident, which aligned with facts showing that robbery and assault did occur. Police have charged them with nighttime robbery. Regarding reports that the victim allegedly engaged in indecent conduct with the seven youths before the assault, details cannot be disclosed as this is a juvenile case handled with multidisciplinary team involvement.

Khundechsamrit stated that whether the location is a disorderly area during nighttime hours requires inquiry from the State Railway of Thailand, as they own the area. Investigators do not oppose bail, and families may file bail applications. Whether bail is granted depends on the court's discretion.

Health Fund Defends Advertising Purchases Through Proper Channels
3d ago Khaosod

The Health Promotion Foundation (HPF) has clarified that it procures advertising space directly from site owners in compliance with government accounting standards, ensuring budget efficiency, transparency, and auditability. Dr. Prakasit Kayasitthi, Deputy Manager of the HPF, posted on Facebook to address claims that the foundation pays media companies indirectly through NGOs and organizations rather than directly to billboard owners. He stated that these allegations are inaccurate and that the HPF contracts directly with Bangkok Transit System and Bangkok Mass Transit System (BEM) through proper procedures, securing campaign space at the Bangkok Pier and BTS stations, including 18 complementary signs at Victory Monument for 12 months to promote better public health behavior.

Dr. Prakasit emphasized that all HPF campaign media procurement complies 100 percent with the 2017 Public Procurement Act overseen by the Comptroller General's Department. The process includes committees for scope of work, vendor qualification assessment, evaluation of bids based on price and technical merit, and contract inspection. The HPF spends less than 5 percent of its annual budget on advertising, but reaches a wide audience thanks to partner organizations offering discounted rates below commercial rates, including the Airports of Thailand, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, MRT, BTS, and other public and private partners committed to improving public health behavior.

According to Nielsen Media Monitor's 2025 assessment, the HPF achieved 1.703 billion baht in advertising value while spending approximately 220 million baht annually on media campaigns across all channels. Campaign effectiveness evaluations for 2024-2025 showed an 84.59 percent success rate in changing public attitudes and behaviors. Dr. Prakasit reaffirmed the foundation's commitment to transparent and efficient budget use for the health and wellbeing of all Thais, and invited constructive criticism to improve operations, while requesting clarification on any inaccurate information that may have been circulated.

Opposition Demands Supreme Court Review of Senate Election Fraud Case

Opposition leader Tawi Sodsong called for Supreme Court intervention in senate election fraud cases, arguing the Election Commission must refer credible violations to court rather than acting unilaterally on candidate disqualifications.

Opposition Demands Supreme Court Review of Senate Election Fraud Case
3d ago Khaosod

The Office of the House Speaker convened an Opposition Leaders Forum on August 15, 2026, at Krungsri River Hotel in Ayutthaya to discuss political institution reform and checks-and-balances mechanisms under the constitution. Tawi Sodsong, head of the Phachachon Party, criticized widespread corruption and argued that democracy requires decentralized power, human-centered governance, justice, freedom, and equality. He expressed concern that the current constitution has created 16 new independent bodies—including a constitutional court, anti-money-laundering office, and anti-corruption commission—all appointed by the Senate, which he characterized as the origin point of systemic fraud consuming Thailand. Sodsong argued the Election Commission must refer cases to the Supreme Court when credible evidence exists of unfair electoral practices, citing Section 266 of the law. He noted that if the commission disqualifies only some candidates while allowing others with similar violations, harmed voters have legal recourse and opposition parties can file objections within three days for Supreme Court review. Sodsong emphasized the court has authority to investigate additional facts and evidence independently, preventing the commission from acting arbitrarily. He warned that without honest officials and justice, even perfect laws cannot function effectively.

Chinese Man Requires Surgery After Inserting Charging Cable Into Urethra

Chinese Man Requires Surgery After Inserting Charging Cable Into Urethra
3d ago Khaosod

A 49-year-old man from Xinzhou, Guangdong province, recently presented to hospital with severe abdominal pain and an inability to urinate for more than 7 hours, requiring emergency surgery. Out of momentary curiosity, he had inserted an 80-centimeter charging cable into his urethra but was unable to remove it, leaving it lodged in his body for over 7 hours. Unable to urinate and experiencing severe abdominal swelling and pain, he sought medical help. After detailed 3D CT scanning of the pelvic region, doctors found a 6-millimeter diameter charging cable tangled and coiled inside the bladder, causing severe obstruction of the urinary tract and significant narrowing of the lower urethra, preventing normal urine flow. Doctors performed an emergency surgical procedure that took several hours to successfully remove the entire cable from his body. After appropriate treatment, the man has since recovered and been discharged from hospital. Medical experts from Xinzhou First People's Hospital warned that the inner walls of the urethra are lined with delicate mucous membrane with many capillaries and have very low tolerance for irritation. Forcing foreign objects with hard edges into the urethra can easily cause tears or ruptures in the urethral wall, introduce bacteria leading to infection, and in severe cases result in kidney infection and life-threatening sepsis, as well as permanent damage to urinary and sexual function.

Couple Found Dead in Lampang Shophouse; Murder-Suicide Suspected

A husband and wife were found dead in their Lampang shophouse Thursday night after family grew concerned when unable to contact them; police suspect murder-suicide.

Couple Found Dead in Lampang Shophouse; Murder-Suicide Suspected
3d ago Khaosod

LAMPANG — A husband and wife were found dead inside a two-storey shophouse in central Lampang on Thursday night after their child became concerned when they could not be contacted for several hours.

Police at Mueang Lampang Police Station were alerted at about 20:30 to the deaths at a shophouse opposite Wat Si Koet on Rob Wiang Road in Hua Wiang subdistrict, Mueang Lampang district.

Investigators, a doctor from Lampang Hospital, provincial forensic officers and Sawang Nakhon Lampang rescue workers were called to the scene.

Relatives had contacted authorities after being unable to reach the couple since late morning. Rescue workers forced open the locked front door and entered the building.

Inside, officers found the body of a 58-year-old man, identified as Lek, near the second-floor stair railing. His wife, who was around the same age, was found dead on a bed in a bedroom.

Police said the woman had marks around her neck and a length of rope was found inside the room.

Investigators initially suspect that the man may have killed his wife before taking his own life. However, police said the circumstances remain under investigation pending autopsy results, forensic examination and further questioning of witnesses.

Police were told that earlier that morning, Lek had sent a message to the couple's child saying, "Goodbye." The family was unable to contact him afterwards, prompting the request for authorities to check the home that evening.

Monks at nearby Wat Si Koet told investigators that the couple occasionally borrowed small amounts of money from monks at the temple, usually around 300 to 500 baht. The abbot had previously lent them about 1,000 baht to help with their fruit smoothie business.

According to the monks, the couple would sometimes repay the money before later borrowing again.

Customers and delivery riders familiar with the couple described them as friendly and polite. They sold inexpensive fruit drinks, with prices starting at 20 baht per cup, and those who knew them said they had not expected such an incident.

The couple also kept about four or five cats. Rescue workers searched the property but could not locate them, so they left cat food inside the house in case the animals returned.

Police are continuing to investigate the deaths, with financial difficulties and debt among the possible factors being examined.

Parliament Tackles Temple Land Disputes Nationwide

Parliament's Religion Committee is gathering nationwide data on temple land disputes after visiting Nakhon Sawan to study how monasteries acquire and register property rights.

Parliament Tackles Temple Land Disputes Nationwide
3d ago Khaosod

On August 15, the Religion, Art and Culture Committee of the House of Representatives, led by deputy chair Chananth Thai-Sert, visited Nakhon Sawan province to study religious affairs and discuss solutions to temple land disputes. The committee met with senior monks and local officials at Wat Khao Thong in Phayuhakiri district to address concerns about how temple land is acquired, donated, and legally registered in accordance with monastic law.

The committee expressed worry that once land is donated to a temple, legal procedures and documentation must be completed promptly to prevent future ownership disputes. They cited the Wat Pa Adulyaram case in Khon Kaen as a cautionary example.

Chananth revealed that the committee will work with the National Office of Buddhism to gather detailed data on temple land problems nationwide, distinguishing between privately-owned temple land and state land used with permission for monastery construction. This information will be used to develop a national strategy for addressing the issue.

The committee also intends to request all provincial Buddhist affairs offices to survey and categorize temple land problems in their areas. Chananth stressed the urgency of the matter, as it involves law, land rights, religious property management, and relationships between temples, communities, and government agencies.

Following the meeting, the committee received two letters requesting assistance with land title documents from monks and residents at Wat Thep Nimit Sawang Tham in Nakhon Sawan.
