Thailand U-20 Coach Admits Focus Lapsed in Loss to Iraq
Thailand's U-20 coach acknowledged his players lost focus after securing qualification, resulting in a 3-1 defeat to Iraq on September 6, though both teams advanced to the Asian Championship final round in China.
Chakrapan Panpee, head coach of Thailand's under-20 national football team, acknowledged that his players lost concentration during their 3-1 defeat to Iraq on September 6 at Chonburi Stadium, after learning they had already secured a spot in the Asian Championship final round.
In Group F of the 2027 AFC Under-20 Asian Championship qualifying round, Thailand entered the final match having won their previous two games, while Iraq came with three points. Iraq showed noticeably greater determination and secured a 3-1 victory, finishing level with Thailand on six points but advancing as group winners on goal difference. Both teams nevertheless qualified for the final tournament in China.
After the match, Panpee reflected on the performance: "This was a frustrating game early on. We lost possession frequently and couldn't control the match. Our opponent exploited our turnovers on the counter-attack. We warned them about Iraq's long balls and the danger of losing possession, but it happened anyway. We tried to help the team read the opposition's rhythm and playing style, but the game situation made players forget tactics and technique. We must credit Iraq for their superior commitment. We knew after the first match that we were already through, which cost us our drive and motivation. We need to improve our commitment in every match."
He added: "We have plenty of work to do. This defeat is a valuable lesson. We were outplayed in the first half and must accept that. In the second half we tried to adjust. The key is learning why we lost and improving, not repeating mistakes. Everyone must learn and work together."
Panpee apologized to supporters for not securing victory but said the team had achieved its primary goal of reaching the Asian Championship final in China. He urged fans to follow the young squad, describing them as future stars of Thailand's senior national team.
The coaching staff will now report to the Football Association of Thailand and prepare for the 2027 AFC Under-20 Asian Championship, scheduled for March 24 to April 10, 2027, in China. The tournament will determine four Asian representatives for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
