Thailand-China High-Speed Rail Phase 1 Nears 55% Completion
Thailand's high-speed rail link from Bangkok to Nong Khai is 55% complete on phase 1, with the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima segment targeted to open in 2026 as part of a larger three-nation transport network connecting Thailand, Laos, and Chin
The Ministry of Transport is advancing the Thailand-China high-speed railway project, expediting construction of phase 1 while preparing to open bidding for phase 2 to connect Thailand, Laos, and China and support regional trade, investment, and economic development.
On July 27, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn chaired the first 2026 meeting of the joint committee managing the Thailand-China railway cooperation project. Senior Transport Ministry officials and relevant agencies attended to track progress and accelerate the Bangkok-Nong Khai high-speed rail project in both phase 1 and phase 2 preparations, including linking railway systems across Thailand, Laos, and China into a seamless regional transport network to support future travel, trade, investment, and tourism.
The meeting focused on monitoring progress and resolving obstacles in the Thailand-China government cooperation agreement to develop a high-speed rail system connecting Bangkok, the Northeast, and Nong Khai province, a strategic area for border trade and regional connectivity.
Once completed, the project will improve travel efficiency between Bangkok and major regional cities, reduce distance and time constraints, and increase flexibility in moving people and economic activities. It will also disperse investment from central areas, stimulate development around stations, and create opportunities for business, tourism, and services along the route.
Phase 1, spanning Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima (250.77 kilometers with 6 stations) and budgeted at 179,412.21 million baht, comprises 14 civil contracts. Currently, 2 contracts are completed, 10 are under construction, and 2 are in procurement, bringing overall construction progress to 55.27 percent. Near-completion work includes the Muak Lek and Lam Takong tunnel section and the Lam Takong-Si Khiew and Kud Chik-Khok Khoat sections. Contracts for the Bang Sue-Don Mueang and Ban Pho-Phra Kaew sections are being expedited to enable signing and construction launch soon.
The Transport Ministry targets opening the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima segment in 2026. Once operational, the route will provide an alternative travel option between Bangkok and the Northeast while supporting economic activity expansion to provinces and cities along the corridor. Beyond transportation convenience, areas surrounding stations have potential to develop as commerce, services, residential, and tourism hubs, creating jobs, increasing income, and attracting new investment to the region.
